Printing Using HPLIP, Installing Python

#1 Post by mulluysavage »

Relative noob to Puppy, liking things, but now down a rabbit hole trying to print.

Thought I had the HP driver loaded and thought I printed something. Doesn't print now.

Went to the HP web site and followed the install HPLIP instructions.
http://hplipopensource.com/node/332#initial
Error: "Python" not found. Oh. No Python on Puppy.

Tried compiling Python from source.
Error: "No C Compiler Found." Oh. No C compiler on Puppy.

Found instructions on loading devx_431.sfs to an HD install.
http://www.puppylinux.com/hard-puppy.htm
Error upon step 1: "Failed Mounting or Unmounting."

Ugh. I need to print!

What model printer do you have?

What Puppy version do you have?

What printer driver did you originally try?

HP Deskjet F4280
What a coincidence! I have this printer too. Read here for details on how to upgrade your CUPS to 1.3.11. Then install the HP printer/scanner drivers. They work 100% for me.

Fantastic! I chose HP because of Linux support - maybe not such a coincidence? :)

Okay, wall #1: I ran the pet, but got no dialog box with options. It just told me it was installed. When I checked the version, however, it said 1.1.23.

What to do?

I just went to Patriot's download site using Puppy 4.3.1 and got his cups-1.3.11-i486.pet. I installed it and got the menu of options. So I don't know why it didn't work for you.

All I can suggest is that you boot off the Live CD using the "puppy pfix=ram" option and try it again.

I got it working. *yeah baby*

I just tried downloading Patriot's pet again and it gave me the dialog box this time. Maybe I did something funky last time, I don't know.

So far Puppy has been an awesome OS - and at least half of what makes an awesome open OS is the community support like what you guys have done for me here. Cheers.
