Upup Precise 5.3.3.3 with kernel 3.3.2

#1 Post by pemasu »

Upup Precise 5.3.3.3 has been uploaded.
Kernel 3.3.2, generic i686, non-pae, hibernation enabled

Uses Barry Kaulers work, bug fixes through Precise thread in murga-forum, my own fixes and additions.
This is not tuned profoundly but it should give basic functionality.

Uses latest woof.
Seamonkey-2.8
Rox Right Click support
Xchat
Transmission
Gnome-Mplayer
Ffmpeg - Pmusic
Abiword
Gnumeric
CUPS - printing works
Frisbee - acpitool - laptop function support
Vattery-acpitool
Freememapp-pemasu with improved right click.

Upup Precise 5.3.3.3 has been uploaded.
This will be probably the last....for awhile.....

It consists of
- missing icons fixes
- gsettings schemas installation simple hack to installpkg.sh
- zoneinfo time zone data reverted to Puppy original.
- compressed with `comp -xz -Xbcj x86` ie xz compression. Makes the iso smaller...but I dont think that using delta file would be reasonable with changed compression...havent tested.
- updated Precise Pangolin databases
- Python-2.7 in devx sfs...there isnt Python-2.6 in database anymore
- updated broadcom wl - b43 - b43legacy detection
- ext4 savefile choice based on Barry Kaulers latest commit
- pet_packages-upup repo added to the PPM...quite empty....but if people compile new packages with Upup Precise...I will upload them...maybe I will also...if I have need for new apps...or versions...I will...

Download link:http://www.smokey01.com/pemasu/UpupPrec ... ecise5333/

Broadcom wireless wl module has been added and firmware.dep file has been updated.

PupClockset has been added. Otherwise this is still more or less...go to basics release. Trying to get the core work...

The conky in pic is not preinstalled. It just shows the build nicely.

Check the md5sum of download before posting bugs.

That is nice!
But why not the 3.2.x kernel that will be supported for the next 5 years and you'll not need to wary about driver compatibility?
Better yet use the Ubuntu patched source. Comes with aufs too!

I am not enthusiathic of using same or updated kernel version 5 years. I do like to test newer kernel versions.

Do you have a link to ubuntu kernel sources. I havent ever downloaded any other than official kernels.

I should have now base sfs in condition. The devx sfs was missing git and I created package template for it...just for sure...and it seems to be processed.

Pesamu, is there support for the BCM43236 WIFI in this kernel ?
The existing B43 do not support this new chip, but the linux kernel dev's where testing support for the 43236 in januari. Not sur ehowever if it ended up in this kernel.

I decided to add Xchat and Transmission to the build and that delayed the upload.

About Broadcom chips support. Without knowing the status and the needed firmware...I cant say anything. You will know when you test. If it is just missing firmware....I can try to hunt it and....also create it with fw-cutter application. Done that before....
But....I will need the report of dmesg of failure comp with broadcom. Without it I cant do much....

Hi Pemasu

Gratulation, it starts perfectly under 60 s from hard disk (frugal).

And you did eliminate yourself a part of my notes in my parallel post ( http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 139#621139 , mTpaint was old and stay old, PrtScr key doesn't work).

As it starts fast and finds all main settings of my PC about himself I would be interesting to use it completely without save file!

Why: old puppy's under 1.1 did work so:

each day a fresh puppy. no change, no spy, no disturb

I would remaster it once after I will have adapted my settings, create a /root/,mozilla/seamonkey with different absolute non critic and not sensible entries, a link in /root to /mnt/home/f/my instead of /root/my-documents and would never save somewhat after that in /root as I can do it directly hitting on the link my-documents  so

- I don't need some save file any more at all,
- have a system never changing in all details in the puppy file system
- have a system with highest confidentiality as no entry would stay in it after each shutdown, only the data I have entered intentionally manually before I did remaster!

To do it, I need a version without greeting at the begin of the session and without asking if I will save before shutting down!

And it would be better sfs-load-on-the-fly in a version working at the first start would be directly on the desktop and in a subregister in the hidden menu of JWM as I don't want to work often with Abiword or Gnumeric but principally with a LibreOffice.sfs
(this script sfs-load-on-the-fly is ill: it ask and ask and ask  instead to do it directly  , but, ok, we have it so...)

What would be to do to avoid to start the greeting immediately after start and avoid the question if you want save before reboot or shutting down?

kind regards

Pesamu,

This is all dmesg outputs on the USB wifi.
  • [ 1.649381] usb 1-6: New USB device found, idVendor=0a5c, idProduct=bd17
    [ 1.649391] usb 1-6: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3
[ 1.649399] usb 1-6: Product: Remote Download Wireless Adapter
    [ 1.649406] usb 1-6: Manufacturer: Broadcom
    [ 1.649411] usb 1-6: SerialNumber: 000000000001
It does not load the driver (not found in lsmod)

Any idea if I can force it with insmod or so ?

Volhout

P.S. the serial number makes me think it is a prototype dongle.

# git clone git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git

And pick from there new brcm firmwares....done...create a pet...done.

And here are the new firmwares which I did pick up from linux-firmware git.
Install the attached pet and you get 3 new firmwares....also for BCM43236

Yep. /root/.xbindkeysrc did have the reference to the Pupsnap. Change it like this:
#PrintScreen
"mtpaintsnapshot.sh"
m:0x0 + c:111
Print
I havent gone through all key bindings. But it is not difficult to edit the preferences script your self.

About applications. This build comes mostly with applications from Precise Pangolin and the versions are as they are in Precise Pangolin.
If people wants newer versions....I will include gladly self compiled newer ones. I wont probably do all that my self. I have just one life....and I dont know yet how to clone my self....ideas....

Hi pemasu

Looks real good. I am running on a Dell D430 and it recognizes my hadware, but there is only one thing so far. That is I can not change screen resolution on it.

I have a ASUS 24" external screen and it stays at 1280x800 no matter how I try to change it. Well check others things soon.

I did a manual frugal install to a flash drive.
I had some problems loading the kernel source sfs but managed to get
it done using the bootmanager.
Between ppm and some pets that I have I got vlc and smplayer working.
