i found unp to be one easy tool to uncompress files using terminal.
Once installed, you open your terminal from the folder where you keep your compressed file, for exemple a zip file downloaded from Jamendo, and start the command line with unp and filename.zip.

Installing unp from repo should also install any dependencies needed.
You can see unp as a frontend for various archivers :
It supports several compressors and archiver programs, chooses the right one(s) automatically and extracts one or more files in one go.
