Desktop drive icons not aligned

#526 Post by Béèm »

pa_mcclamrock wrote:Comments on Lucid Puppy 114:

Booted pfix=ram, copied lupusave.3fs to safe location.

Very little progress on desktop icon alignment. HD icons still too low, CD icon still too far left. But--here's the progress--when I plug in a flash drive, the icon doesn't show up quite as much too far to the left as in 113! :roll: (Why is it so hard to solve this problem?)
I join the club.
I have to run the realignment.

Lucid Puppy 114 on Medion Akoya MD 96970 Notebook

#527 Post by massapowa »

I've tested Lucid Puppy 114 on a Medion Akoya MD 96970 Notebook.

First of all: A great work again. Thanks a lot!

< Booting from CD: fine
* Boots directly into a good screen resolution.
* WLAN: Works fine. Dougals wizard is great!
* Sound: Works fine (gxine). (!!)
** I have had troubles with Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid. No sound with live CD
** I have had troubles with Puppy 4.3.1 - no sound
** Knoppix 5 did not work either
** Sabayon Linux gaming edition did work
* Video: Works fine
** mpeg: fine
** ogv: sound ok, but no video

* Now the disadvantage: Keyboard is not fully functional. It was with Lucid Puppy 005.
** Localization to de-Euiro was done. Puppy held this in memory after restarting X, but did not use the de-latin1.map
** I tried the xorg-wizard: no effect after restart of X
** I've noticed that the keymaps are in .gz compression. But it seems they are not unzipped and not loaded.

Desktop drive icons size information not displayed

Desktop drive icons size information not displayed

I can see the file system information, but not the size.
Same problem in quirk 13 up to 22.
I reported it.
Unfortunately Barry doesn't have the problem.
Hope I can get help here.

Look in /root/.pup_event

All your drives should be there. Right click one of your drives and look inside. Open the XML file in geany. Please post the contents of that XML file for clues.

Also does "Partview" work for you? It is the little drive icon nest to "Show Desktop"

Cheers

Lupu114. Fresh frugal install. Previous finnish keyboard setting problem. You need to run xorgwizard to get it working. Cups prints with HP LJ 1020 ok.
Gnome-Mplayer was installable from repo with missing libs from repo.
I tried to install openoffice from repo (for getting finnish hyphenation and proofreading to work with openoffice) but I hit my head to the wall too many times. Downloading and installation failed with most openoffice packages.

Snapshot about my desktop.

If you have installed 2 browsers via Quickpet and decided to ditch one of them, the next time you want to start a browser session using the remaining browser, the browser chooser appears - rather than starting the remaining browser.

A work-around is to go to /usr/local/bin/ and edit the 'defaultbrowser' text file to reflect the fact that one browser remains installed - which presumably now ought to act as the system default.

This maybe reflects the fact that the browser gets installed by using the Quickpet dialogue, but gets de-installed via the Puppy Package Manager.

One fix would be to add a "current-browser-delete button" to Quickpet.
Clicking on this could run a script that would simply ask the user which browser he wants as the current default. The value of this variable then gets echoed back to the '/usr/local/bin/defaultbrowser' text file, thus over-writing the previous value.

Still a cludge though. Must be a better way of doing this.
Hey tronkel

Ok, I've got the code that finds what browsers are left installed and change default ..but the best way to implement it is the problem. I can put a button on browser-installer no problem, but is it the best way? (have actually done in my testing version and it works well), but what if you want to just change the browser for the sake of it? Maybe a menu entry?

Ideas anyone? What's the most friendly way to do this?

firstrun in my screen. note text is obscured.(see attached image)
after not touching anything in first run wizard and moving quickpet icon into the plan and play icon line, was online in seconds with already installed portable opera-10.53.6330.petand simple network setup.

alt+drag windows still to do.
have a package manager.
still no decent games :wink:
pwigets installs from quickpet (with no fans)
time was correct even though i didnt alter anything.
then later on going into timezone via menu>desktop and changing timezone, my time is still correct and as before i set the timezone.
clicking mute fails in gxine. sound is still not very loud at maximum.
ayttm failed to connect to irc.freenode.net
after minor icon realignment pupsave is ok and time is ok.

you may be able to use this to keep track of bugs for my screen it is too small to do anything:
http://www.editgrid.com/noyb/admin/test
edit it as you please.

just out of curiosity who actually use the rubbish/recycle bin. just one of the icons i delete.

I am so different from most users so I don't dare to chose but I hope you chose a way that is easy and safe to implement because it would be a good thing to have. So go for it and if too may decide the other way was better they bark loud I guess
I use Google Search on Puppy Forum
not an ideal solution though

(referring to the browser selection switcher)

Two possibilities here:
A desktop icon or a taskbar tray icon.

I think the tray icon is the better/cooler of the two. On right-clicking the tray icon you can see a list of currently installed browsers - none, one or several.

Click on the the one you want as the default.

To implement this list, you would need to know which configuration file holds this info. This file then gets parsed by a bash script that returns the list data. List data is then passed to the tray application. Clicking on the item echoes the chosen browser text string to /usr/local/bin/defaultbrowser.

This is certainly not a trivial task by any means. Needs someone who is into building tray applets.

Sometimes in OpenOffice I have this issue also. Often after inserting a row in Calc.
I then scroll up and down and the issue is gone.
I have a radeon video controller. Don't know if it is related to the driver.

Thanks micko for your attention.
In the thread I referenced Barry asked me to issue probepart -k, as this is the command used to find the size info. Here goes:

Code: Select all

# probepart -k
/dev/sda1|ntfs|22695088
/dev/sda2|vfat|13245120
/dev/sdb1|vfat|78140128
/dev/sdb2|ext3|78140160
/dev/sdb3|none|1
/dev/sdb4|ntfs|27262305
/dev/sdb5|ext3|10482381
/dev/sdb6|vfat|78140128
/dev/sdb7|ext2|40403443
/dev/sr0|none|1048575
So this looks good.
The picture shows directory root/.pup_event
Already here it's clear the size info isn't there, which is confirmed in the contents of a drives xml file.

Code: Select all

<AppInfo>

Filesystem: ntfs Size: 0,0GB

 <About>
 <Purpose>Drive icons are part of Puppy Event Manager, see System menu</Purpose>
 <Authors>Barry Kauler LGPL 2008</Authors>
 </About>
 <AppMenu>

Run Pmount Puppy Drive Mounter

Run Desktop Drive Icon Manager

Unmount sda1 (if currently mounted)

Unmount ALL mounted partitions

 </AppMenu>
</AppInfo>
Hope for ideas.

EDIT
Oh yes, forgot. Partview gives the correct info.

I gave up on ayttm a long time ago.
Recently I checked again, but still have problems.
I switched to pidgin and I am happy with it.
There is a version here
I got my version 2.6.1 from somewhere in the forum, but can't remember where exactly. Could be as sfs (which I use) or as a pet which I transformed to a sfs.
If you are interested, I can make it available.

yes have seen this behavior in gnumeric as well.
did a pfix=ram i.e. no link to first run wizard in menus
and have posted the actual first screen (a full blank window) before moving the window, by dragging the top bar, makes the text visible. if the window isn't moved by dragging the top bar it will remain blank and not show any text at all.
no scroll bar to move around and as before the first picture i posted above of this is the best that can be attained.

short answer is no, you need to do a fresh frugal install which takes a minute or two when you know how.

tronkel, et al

Ok, I knocked up a pet with the defaultbrowser popup in the tray, it's simple bash/gtkdialog, It works but sometimes the popup comes up anywhere, but in saying that this is experimental, it does actually function, make achoice and your default is changed.

Be warned it is experimental, try at own risk (aw, try it anyway, we're testing here :wink: )

Cheers

Ok, looks like something is getting lost in the translation there. If you are running frugal can you do me a favour and install Startmount, (use peppy's puppy search :wink: )

yeah, yeah, blowing my trumpet you may think but it uses a very similar method to get sizes of partitions and just may narrow things down a bit.

Cheers
