Lucid Puppy 5.0.1 - 24 May 2010
Printing (or the lack of it!)
First the good stuff. I haven't found anything in the menu system that
doesn't work. In fact I am posting this from lupu008 using Opera.
My only problem so far is printing:
Computer 1 - Athlon 1800, asus A7V8X-X mobo, FX5200 graphics 128 meg, 1gig ram,
Epson Stylus Color 400 printer on parallel port.
Run CUPS wizard - it's in the list so select the driver.
Try to print from Abiword - nothing. Look in jobs:
- "/usr/lib/cups/filter/pdftoraster failed"
I'm not trying to print a pdf!
Tried from Geany and just did not print. No message, just "processing since Wed Apr 21 16:22:09 2010".
Computer 2 - Athlon 3000 MSI MS6729 K7N2 mobo, ATI Radeon 9800 graphics 128 meg,
1 gig ram, Canon Pixma MP610 USB printer.
Run CUPS wizard and installed (CUPS + Gutenprint v5.2.5)
Same as above.
A minor?? problem on computer 2 - I can only run xvesa. I get the dark
green problem with xorg. Installing the radeonHD pet made no difference.
FYI both print fine from Puppy 431.
Hope this helps.

Thanks, I am worried that we are too few reporting this and then one day we have a Puppy that I can not use due to me having an unusual hardware that is not compatible.playdayz wrote:Not at all Nooby. I wish very much that we could fix it. Does it happen in full screen, or even if you have a small video window? Oh, but you said there are some Puppies that work correctly. It will require better minds than mine I am afraid.Hope you don't see me as nagging of repeating myself.
But I feel unpolite that I don't put more effort into it.
I have three old computers to test on and I have two relativly new ones and then two laptops. one of these two is the netbook me have in my sig.
I should test in these first. But lazy is just my first name.
I use Google Search on Puppy Forum
not an ideal solution though

Thanks I tested the 000 version and that one have the splitting up when you do fast scrolling using the mouse dragging the most right button_ up and down.
If one use the page down or arrow buttons then it does not split up.
Jerkyness and choppy rendering is gone but that can be accomplished by chosing vesa too in the other lupus.
So how can I find out if this solves it. What did you do
Hahaha it fails to make the keyboard Swedish despite me told it to.
setxkbmap se solves it though.

OK tried Experimental Lucid Puppy Version 000 - using now
it went straight in autorecognizing screen res and is running OK
but it missed my sound card and I had to set this manually.
Tried the radeonHD and that worked OK wi8th this setup - do not know if it is better in any way - need some sort of graphic test maybe with the menu /system /system configuration / hardinfo hardware information

The only thing that I know is definitely better is that radeonhd will do 16-bits. I have tried some timings and they look similar.do not know if it is better in any way
BTW, I am looking at gxine video now--I would gladly defer to anyone who knew what they were doing. I am going to assume first that some codecs are missing, or dependencies for some codecs. It is an interesting theoretical problem, but i believe RealPlayer is very good with playing videos. They have been behaving decently for the last 10 years One program with all the codecs appeals to me over one program with 30 independent codecs. But RealPlayer does not play ogg and flac audio so it is no good to me for that. I might add it to Quickpackage, but we also want to fix gxine.
Quick live test of Lucid 000 on my old P3 test box with onboard Intel 810 graphics..........automatic recognition resulted in a totally incorrect screen resolution.Running "xrandrshell" in the terminal resulted in only 2 choices.....800x600 and 640x480.....instead of my normal 1024x768.
Thankfully you made the xorgwizard pet available.....

Frugal installation of 000 on an ext3 partition. Graphics, sound, and printer set up flawlessly on my hardware.
Should further tests focus on 000 or 008?
Cheers,

Good question. They are almost identical except for the automatic X setup in 000, and a bug fix or two. Another question is which should 009 have--xorgwizard or the automatic setup. I am working on getting the best of both worlds--automatic unless that doesn't work, then easy fix and/or xorgwizard can be run itself. After the automatic setup, xrandr can be run to adjust resolution and/or xorgwizard can be run to fix anything broken. Look for that in 009 on Thursday or Friday.Should further tests focus on 000 or 008?
Yes James C, I think that is basically how it will work--first, the auto config and then on first boot xrandrshell will open on the desktop for any needed adjustments in resolution--otherwise it is just informative. If xrandrshell doesn't work, then xorgwizard will be available (xorgwizard is ignored on first boot, but after that it sticks--as you said).Quick live test of Lucid 000 on my old P3 test box with onboard Intel 810 graphics..........automatic recognition resulted in a totally incorrect screen resolution.Running "xrandrshell" in the terminal resulted in only 2 choices.....800x600 and 640x480.....instead of my normal 1024x768.

Hi all
I have made some changes to quickpackage, nothing too drastic. Just some bugfixes and some changes on the update page.
This will be the first real test of the updating system.
Click the lucid puppy update button on the last page and you will notice a new entry on the web page.
Click yes in the first dialog window and you will get the update, also including the libfaad fix.
Feedback please.
Cheers
