For what it's worth, most peoples experience so far has been quite positive.

And that is good although I can't imagine that they have actually given it a thorough once over.

It should be noted that I am not unhappy with Lucid Puppy. The basic set of apps that have been staples of official Puppy releases seem to work quite well. However as I have pointed out there are some critical issues with the package manager and clearly attention to detail is not what it once was.

For what it is worth the first setup was on my netbook so I decided to install on my desktop. It won't even go there. It can't find my SATA hard drive and drops out of initial ram drive console. Hmm....

Well if this is the direction Puppy is headed in, good luck. I hope that it works out for you.

No, Jack, I didn't remember mostly because I didn't know in the first place. :P

I've never done that either on Puppy or Ubuntu. Now I will, thanks! BTW, following your advice worked and Lupu installed ALL of the missing dependencies. Woohoo, Lupu!!!

Hi Warren

Good to see you enjoying Lupu. We may need the international CatDude of mystery to touch up that quickpet icon in the Gimp for you with his 'glassify' script.

Funny, seems like Lupu either works almost perfectly, or just plain doesn't work for some.

Cheers

Yes. I was looking for that to do a Lucid Puppy logo for the background, too!

Well, the difference for me was in the advice from Jack (Tronkel) that I would have to configure the package manager to update the repository listings so it would find and install all of the dependencies. Knowing that made ALL the difference. Maybe it should be in the opening splash screen in BIG LETTERS or something! :D

I was unaware of the configure button

I put it here on the wiki
Anything missing?
http://puppylinux.org/wikka/LucidPuppy

- hey guys more torrent seeders please :)
Nothing here?
http://www.osst.co.uk/Download/?id=3
and where are our xdelta pieces for modem users? 8)

nice release page
http://puppylinux.org/main/index.php?fi ... elease.htm

The best thing in Lucid Puppy aka Puppy 5 aka Lupu aka Puppy Lucid?
Xinvaders3D - wot no sound - only 20k
- might need some programmer to get sound . . .

We had more testers with Lucid beta
and now we will have loads for 5.1
Also (for example) my included background png is 95k
- disgcraceful - jpg and a bit of compression required

I noticed 20MB aprox was trimmed during the pre release
sequence.
Now that the browser is a choice, which are the biggest programs?

I would like to use kino (nearly there) and VLC
it works in Ubuntu - so is possible . . .
My SFS for Open Office and Xara work
and kompozer makes up for the loss of composer
meaning I can use Firefox.

I started using Firefox with 4.3.1 because
it remembered my last open tabs
and Seamonkey and Firefox and Opera were ALL crashing
because of Adobe Flash - so this feature was needed . . .
Browser choice - hooray

Using java meant I was able to create a video in screentoaster.com
- oh oh - Lucid videos on Youtube please . . . :)

Our main Lupu developers Larry Short and Mick Amadio
have been a pleasure to work with
(always polite to testy testers like me)
They really worked hard - thanks guys
They have puppitude
http://puppylinux.org/wikka/BowWow

Barrys work on the underlying Woof continues on our base
and I hope Warren, Larry, Mick, Jemimah, Kirk and others
will be able to restrain the irrepressible Ttuuxxx
(be afraid)
who will add a bit of future genius to our new 5.1 and beyond
if his work commitments allow (I think they will - good news there)

If Puppy 5 does not work for you
bug report

It is your operating system
make it work for you

Puppy 5 is not perfect - just adorable
Many may prefer the previous 4.3.1
Not me - I love the new Lucid

Thanks everyone
Puppy Lucid - woof woof :D

I First just want to say thanks to everyone who put there time and effort into Lucid Puppy.

Lucid Puppy with full install is running perfect on my old Toshiba Satallite 4090XDVD 400mhz celeron w/192mb ram. Wireless setup with belkin card was easy and even the led lights are now working. I believe this is the best pup yet for this laptop and I have tried 12 over the last two weeks.

Once again thanks guys! :)

Lucid Puppy 5.0 is available below.

http://www.diddywahdiddy.net/Puppy500/L ... se-500.htm

Thank you all for all the work, creativity, and ideas that you have provided this month. I have noticed during my life that I am happiest when I am learning things, so I have been very happy this month. So happy I could hardly stand it a few times. I hope we can all continue to work together, but at a more relaxed pace for a while.

Lucid Puppy 5.0 would not exist without Woof of course and all the work Barry has done in developing and refining Puppy Linux. Nor would it exist without 01micko and all of the forum members who found the bugs and fixed the bugs. As far as I am concerned this is community edition. Thank you.

My aim is for Lucid Puppy to become a no-brainer to use (ie, no need to read the manual!). Just turn on the PC, and off you go...we're not there yet,... --BKauler

Vision for Lucid Puppy 5.0 -> It will have traditional Puppy screen layout and traditional Puppy apps (updated to latest versions). Things will work as Puppy users expect them to. The big move is to create Puppy on top of the Ubuntu binaries, which raises opportunities for future versions.

Lucid Puppy 500 -> http://www.diddywahdiddy.net/Puppy500/lupu-500.iso
md5sum -> e85a6b08e52c551871c84daefa9f8695

Lucid Puppy Devx 500-> http://www.diddywahdiddy.net/Puppy500/lupu_devx_500.sfs
md5sum -> 0915863ed858368c050e19c0cba826f1
Thanks for all the efforts and sorry me whining but it doesn't say if 5.00 has any bug fixes or changes compared to 4.99
If I already have tested 4.99 is 5.00 better at anything? Can I just rename the subdir and menu.lst or do I have to reinstall all the browsers and do the set up again or is it the same iso? What is different?

Don't get me wrong. All power to the devs and thanks for all the efforts all of you have put into this.

I do. AbiWord. Put a Word Processor Installer in Quickpet, like the present Browser Installer.

From 499 to 500 there were a few minor changes. If you want I can provide a delta file to convert your lupu-499.iso file to the lupu-500.iso file. Note: it will not do anything but change the iso.

Cheers

Thanks MickO but I never do Delta. I always do iso. I've already dl it but not tested it.

all due to my incredible and unchanging stupidity buying the wrong hardware.

Als I fail to following good advices in the software. I fail to get local radio going in Lupu4.99 so most likely that will be the case for me in Lupu5 too.

so don't make a delta for my sake.

What I don't like about every puppy? None of them can play music videos again and again automatically. Why is that? You always have to get up out of bed and go to the Puter on other side of room and hit play.

In Windows I can set WMP or VLC whatever to loop the chosen video clip over and over and over for hours. Good for any kind of music. :)

What was it about VLC that we don't have it in Quirky 1.00 or Lucid Puppy 5.0? Not that I favor that player at all. Just me curious?

Thanks indeed for caring about me.

I don't think taking lots of apps out is a good idea.

No two users seem to be able to agree on which browser to include as default so there is a lot to be said for giving people the choice. I have absolutely no problem with that. If I need to add a browser to Puppy so I can browse the Web, by definition I must have access to the Web or I wouldn't feel a need to download a browser so I can browse.

A browser is just about the only app that is useless without Web-access (and even then you could look at locally stored html files). Most of the other apps will work without internet access so why should people have to have internet access to download and then use them?

Puppy can't be all things to all people (though it does a pretty fair job). Is it to be a standalone Live-CD that can be carried around and used on any computer? If everything is to be downloaded you'll have to create save-files on all the machines Puppy is used on or wait for the download, assuming all your machines have fast internet access.

What about people on dial-up? Puppy is one of the few distros that caters for lots of ancient modems.

There's nothing intrinsically wrong with the TinyPC model but is that where we wish to be heading?

Just my two (pre-decimal) pence.

I have problems with my Desktop (a Medion MD8818 with sata drives) for a long time now.
Some puppies detect correctly the drives, others don't.
I can have the sata drives to be recognized by starting with acpi=off.
But I hate that as I loose the ACPI functionality.
Time savers:
Find packages in a snap and install using Puppy Package Manager (Menu).

Lupu has a hidden Seamonkey built I is what I have heard and I tested by writing seamonkey in the console/terminal and sure there it was and loaded up too.

So even if one don't choose any one still have one. :)

Strange--not me:

Code: Select all

# seamonkey &
[1] 6897
# bash: seamonkey: command not found
The only browser I've got built in is the Puppy HTML Viewer, which was good enough to let me send some comments to this forum during the alpha-beta-RC stages without wasting any time downloading a bigger browser, but I still downloaded Firefox after I got the final 5.0 release.
