LibreOffice |
|
Headline news this week is the emergence of an important fork of OpenOffice called LibreOffice.
This fork comes under the umbrella of the recently established "documentfountation.org" whose remit is to support a fully FOSS implementation of Openoffice without any non-free extensions, separate from Oracle and which fully supports the ideals of the ODF file standard.
All the major Linux distros including Debian and Ubuntu will fully support this fork and expect that this will become their default office package. It's as yet not known if Oracle itself will join the gang or if it will donate the name OpenPoffice to the foundation.
This has implications for Puppy Linux as well. We will need sfs packages for this current LibreOffice Beta.
I have tried to do an experimental compile under Debian Squeeze but no joy so-far I'm afraid. At this early stage supplied build is also a bit unstable running under Debian Squeeze, but this is likely to be rapidly fixed.
It's good news really. Look here:

here's a link that compares iron vs chrome http://www.srware.net/en/software_srware_iron_chrome_vs_iron.php
actually looks much nicer.

If you strip the bin and remove the extra locales it will reduce the package by 6MB compress to 19MB compressed.
The sources are just stupid, I'm not downloading them, lol the first part of three is 300MB.

The SRWare website is covered with google ads, and other intrusive advertising. Just a little hypocritical.... Iron is a scam.
All their patch does is hardcode the privacy options already in Chromium. Here is a link with the diffs.

Happy New Year Lobster, and thanks for the podcast
* EDIT
In your pawedcast you say that Wary 5.0 does not include QuickPet, is there a reason for this?

I should imagine Barry finds the PPM (Puppy package manager) sufficient. The new PPM version in Wary will appear in new Woof builds such as Spup.
