How to configure, use IRC Xchat, IRC Gaim?

#1 Post by muskrat »

I'm new to puppy, but not to linux. I'm also new to Gaim but not Xchat.

So here is the deal, I'm a registered user on irc.freenode.net, I can login with Gaim but seem to be unable to get into the channel puppylinux. I've read the instructions on PuppyLinuxWiki about how to set up Gaim but the part here throws me for a loop.
# Select your IRC (irc.icq.net) account
# In the Channel Box add...#puppylinux
# Click on Add.
I don't see any place to choice the channel.

When I use Xchat, I login to freenode then, if I enter the wrong command, freenode gives me suggestions on how to enter the command to join channels.

I can't remember the commands, and Giam doesn't seem to operate the same.

This is what works for me.
Click start, then internet, then gaim messenger.
Click the accounts button, the accounts dialog box will open.
Click add and the add accounts dialog will open.
Select the irc protocol from the drop down menu, then type your screen name and the server (irc.freenode.net).
Back at the gaim messenger type in your password and click sign on.
Now you will see a buddies menu, click it and select "Add Chat"
In the dialog box, in the channel section type, #puppylinux and then click add.
On your gaim messenger you will now see the " #puppylinux " showing,
double click it and you should be logged into puppy's irc channel.

Good Luck,
Frank

Hello all, long time no see hope all is well and Happy New Year!

I'm not sure if the Gaim instructions need updated now that the newer version of Gaim was recently included, but since you are familiar with X-Chat and Gaim isn't as easy to use with IRC, I recommend you install either the X-Chat 2.6.0 DotPup package or the 1.8.11 PupGet/Unleashed package.

FYI, any IRC client should give you a list of its available commands when you type /help. See irchelp.org for more info on using IRC.

Also, just to clarify, please read the IRC wiki page to see that our official IRC server is not at freenode (although we have a placeholder channel there) but at IrCQ-Net (irc.icq.net). If you or any others need more assistance, feel free to post again.

Thanks J_Rey I would like to do that, but I've found often times IRC chat is a lot quicker way of getting these simple answers. Thanks a bunch all of you for your answers.
