Does puppy need to explain easy installs to software devs

#1 Post by Aitch »

The reason I ask, is it is common to see downloads for software saying download these linux files, select deb, mw.tar, tar.gz, rpm, source, etc, BUT RARELY, IF EVER .pet!!

Surely we aren't getting the info out or something?

Example...a [possible] dev comes to us [maybe just an enthusiast?]

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 497#403497

This could just be seen as spammy, or maybe there is an opportunity here to explain to this dev how easy it is to make his game into a .pet, and get him to publicise it!

....word spreads, more devs make puppy pets....see?

Now, I haven't learned this skill yet, but haven't I read that you can change a tar.gz to a .pet by simply renaming it?

a reminder

I just had to rant and rave somewhere.. :D
Man, I hate Ubuntu.... :x
Damn, I love this Pup... 8)
I just spent 4 1/2 hours trying to compile/undeb/unrpm/hack and slay a program on Puppy 4.12, to no avail.
Just for the heck of it I checked my UPup...
Sure enough, there it was, in "Jaunty Universe"
D/L, installed, and resolved its own dep1s...
What took me 4 hrs of searching, unrpming, ect..Took it about 5 min...
And it had the ones I couldnt find...And the Program..(Stellarium 0.10)...
Runs great...

Kudos Barry...It works great....
Damn...
Do we need a post on several pages stating boldly:

Devs, make your software run easily and faster, on Puppy Linux and attract new users?

- with a demo page...?

Over to you, guys doing dev work...and thanks!!

Hey Thanks! I have been playing Scorched3d since 2006. I do know the Dev's @ the Scorched3d forum/I am a game server Admin. We have been trying to find alternate ways of promoting this game. Scorched3d can be downloaded and used by anyone-It is open source Wink

Thanks for any help that you can offer,
Viking62

My initial posts are here (sorry if they are in the wrong place in the forum).

bump

thanks Viking62

hey, no-one known as 'dev' reading this?

This IS cutting edge, right?

A comment would be useful, thanks

Also, the thought occurs to me that software devs could be reminded to use Puppy's software repo

where's the link? is it: pet_packages, here?

ftp://ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/puppylinux/

PS, Software devs, Note:

2007 is latest info!! for creating .pets [Puppy compatible software packages] - see tgz2pet for converting .tar.gz to .pet files

http://puppylinux.com/development/createpet.htm

Here is BarryK's latest package manager page, AFAIK

@devs
When extending the Puppy OS, why not adapt packaging from a mini distro like SliTaz, which is intended to be extensible, rather than Ubuntu?

debs, rpms, tar, source -- all install on a wide variety of distros

pets install on puppies

additionally, puppy, being small, is short on libs, which makes installing, and possibly also building packages, a bit of a nuisance?

Puppy can install deb, tar.gz, tgz, pet, and now tar.xz, txz and pxt (xz version of pet)... pretty much everything but rpm, but that was in progress

pet is just tar.gz with an md5 tac'd on and renamed (similar for pxt) - the only other big difference is what we name the install and uninstall scripts and maybe that image files in the root will be auto-copied to the image folder (not sure if that is different or not)

I have found that some deb files are source that looks to be compiled and installed.
I have downloaded such files.

Yes, but generally speaking, they identify themselves as source archives you are expected to build, so you should know that going in.
