I bet dial-up users love Firefox over Seamonkey when it comes to updates updates
I like the silent updates Firefox does, usually it just says "Firefox has updated, please restart the browser to view the updates" or something like that.

To be honest - dialup users would probably prefer opera (out of the box at least) for the turbo feature - regardless of updates (I have gotten 10.5 testing down to a 7MB rox app pet with english locales and no unite now that it is gtk based) ... I don't think the fasterfox addon does as well as turbo - my understanding is that opera servers compress the data, so websites that are already compressed will not see much improvement, but it doesn't seem like very many are. Unfortunately there are still some annoying bugs in opera that would annoy intermediate to advanced users... like adding url tags in the forum (it drops the beginning tag)

@ttuuxxx and others,
I just installed SeaMonkey 2.0.3, so I can't testify myself, but a while ago esmourguit confirmed the update in SeaMonkey is automatic, like in FF.

Honestly, I see very little difference between browsers. Everyone has a favorite, but as far as I can see, they all do the job. Some are better at some things (size, stability, etc), but they can all do the job. I don't think we can go wrong regardless of the one chosen.
The only thing I would request would be a personal bookmarks toolbar. These are missing in the official releases (cept 4.21 ), and they are quite handy.

Don't bother with translate addons there are a wast of space. Google's auto translate JavaScript Bookmark does a fine job.

Firefox notes:
Bookmarks added to /usr/lib/firefox-3.6/defaults/profile/bookmarks.html
(so far only the forum - what others?)
bug 196406 is fixed so I enabled pipelining (allows compressed pages similar to opera turbo for pages that support it)
/usr/lib/firefox-3.6/greprefs/all.js
pref("network.http.pipelining" , true);
pref("network.http.pipelining.ssl" , true); // disable pipelining over SSL
pref("network.http.proxy.pipelining", true);
I did not change this, but it may speed up finding sites if set to true:
pref("network.dns.disableIPv6", false);
We don't have helvetica - so I added DejaVuSans the /usr/lib/firefox-3.6/defaults/profile/chrome/userChrome.css
window {
font-family: DejaVuSans !important;
}
#urlbar {
font-family: DejaVuSans !important;
}

}

@ ttuuxxx - thanks I modified some of your search plugins a bit - replaced http://www.puppylinux.ca/ with puppylinux.* .... this will have it search all puppylinux sites ... also barry's blog is now at bkhome.org, so that is changed & I may add ibiblio
... future versions may benefit from distro.ibiblio.org/.../petpackages-5 & packages.debian.org

I haven't had time to look at this one yet.
Despite my well-known views about browsers, frankly, I am not prepared to waste even more time with distros using Seamonkey alone. I simply don't have time to d/l Firefox, Fire*** or Opera, Dillo, whatever and be sure of getting the correct version. This has become mission critical because it cannot connect to the configuration monitor programs of so many routers. This is particularly annoying as the old Netsurf that was used to display the 'Help' page has also disappeared. In particular, the Huweii(?) modem is becoming widespread now and is one that doesn't show in SM.
Although I prefer Opera and 10.50 is generally reckoned to knock socks off anything else out there, I am quite happy to use Firethingy instead. It is unacceptable in today's market that this obsession with wrongly designated compatible browsers allegedly free of restrictions be foisted upon an unsuspecting user. As far as I remember, all browsers share commonality with Mosaic, some with Arachne, (inter alia) - both subsumed into commercial as well as non-commercial products now.

Just an update Subject description: Seamonkey |

I'm sure you on it. But SeaMonkey went "gold" a while back. Maybe time to include version 2 in the mix.
Also, is there a way to tell what Puppy version I'm running from either a desktop command or a CLI Terminal command?
So far, alpha seem OK.

'Fraid not. Recently, the appearance or otherwise of 'puppyversion' has been sporadic not only in the the developers flagship titles, but also Quirky and many third party derivatives. Most annoying. Probably some standardised reference to version basis needs to embedded deeply within the core, not to say kernel, of all offerings?

Viewnior does open files with non-english chars! You just have to turn on "Utf-8 for applications" from the X settings.

PUPSTATE (cat /etc/rc.d/PUPSTATE) gives some useful info also.
It would be nice if uname -r would be reported in PUPSTATE also.
