Puppy Ultimate Edition v0.17 alpha

#1 Post by toowoombalinux »

G'day,
Firstly, apologies to dial-up people ... sorry.

I don't expect anyone to take this seriously but here it is...
Puppy-Ultimate Edition v0.17 alpha based on Puppy 301.

It is 2GBs in size son I've split it up into 200MBs files. Upzip the files and use the join script (unzip it first), in the same directory as the split files, to make the iso. The iso may be 2gigs but expect that to expand out to 5 gigs with a Full HD install.

I can't argue at all about the merits of a bloated monstrosity as this - as I agree with you. However, this is very close to how I have my desktop so it's very convenient. It is also a good study into what works and what doesn't work in Puppy 3.01.

The menu system is very concocted - I have a clumsily over-ridden the system until my menu experiments have yielded a positive outcome. So installing new programmes won't show up in the menu - once you see the layout you will understand.

Without Printer or internet connection it idles around 35mbs - Ubuntu Ultimate Edition (aka Ultimate Edition) idles around 280mbs - and Windows... don't know but it's probably higher. That figure comes from conky so it may not be accurate - will test it on a 64mbs 400Mhz machine to see how it goes - an earlier version worked fine.

Note that this is an alpha version so it may not work properly - despite my tests. And you may find some ideas are only half-completed - eg: the admin toolbox.

Next project is to add a Vid Card Installer - btw - 3D acceleration is required for the 3D Games - he's a few that's been pre-packaged - any more available that works?

nvidia-7186.pet for ancient nvidia graphics cards (riva TNT to Geforce 1).
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?z1hmldeiwow

nvidia-9643.pet for most nvidia cards (officially Gf2 to Gf4 but have tested on Gf7 OK).
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?udqe4nynnym

nvidia-100.14.19.pet for latest cards (Gf5 to Gf8)
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?wwzrmtzdwuv

NVIDIA-185.18.14-k2.6.21.7.pet
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?jmyyhmnjmnt

ATI_fglrx-8.4.pet
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?jyymnyoiy1y

But wow! This was a fun exercise.

NOTES:
Audio Production - if a programme does not work it's because the Jack Daemon is not running (JACK Audio Connection Kit)

BTW. Please use pfix=noram or else you will be waiting a very long time or it won't load at all.

Question: How do you stop pfix=noram loading an installed pup-save module? and How do you automatically boot the LiveCd as pfix=noram?

Cheers
Martin
PS. The Puppy installer is in the admin toolbox on the right-side wbar or use the terminal and type puppyinstaller.

Thank you for this.

Been watching and waiting! Does all the unzipping and file connecting need to be done in some flavor of Puppy or will XP (sacrilege) work?
Thanks again

Hey CA,
join is a bash script using the cat command (i don't know if that command works in windows) - and again not sure about unzipping tarballs (tar.gz).
An easy way, for Windows Users, is to burn a copy of a fat-free puppy like big_bass's fat-free 3.01 (it's only 62mbs) load the live CD and use the script from there.

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=26445

PS. I have discovered that the Set-Up Wizard is not in the Menu - it's again is in the Admin Toolbox on the right-side wbar (with the Puppy Installer). It will be added with the next release. And Kiten does not work as I haven't included Japanese fonts - been looking for a fix but may need to nick the fonts from another distro.

Been looking at Genaelogy and jcash - nice programmes packaged by ttuuxxx - they will be added as they have already been tested. Also, included will be the start of a comprehensive Help Menu and a few walk-throughs - I would like to have some sort of auto-installer/auto-patitioner but need to look deeper into that.

Cheers
Martin

One more thing....

The Text-to-Speech function on the Tray will convert .doc .abw and .txt to speech. Just copy one of these document types into my-document - my-mail and have a test (WARNING: It will delete the file once it's finished).

Hello!
Pieces "c" and "d" have CRC errors. They will extract under Windows XP, but not under Puppy. After extracting all pieces, they will re-join under Puppy and make an ISO(?). I ran the Distro and it ran ok, but kept dropping me out to the "configure xorg" command line upon 3D program quitting and the internet radio streamer hangs-bad ISO maybe (from pieces "c" and "d")?
Anyway, thanks for the greatly loaded Puppy and any help would be appreciated. Would love to use this regularly. BTW-my video is Intel i915 (shows up as i810 in Puppy).

Hey CA
Did you do a md5sum check to see if the iso was ok?
MD5SUM = 092c46d4db7dcd81511ec1933520bfc2

The join script will make an iso in Puppy. The bash script which you can run in terminal is...

Code: Select all

cd {to the directory}
cat ulti* >Puppy-Ultimate-0.17.iso
Actually the 3D games needs a warning sticker that you need 3D acceleration and that OpenGL7.2 doesn't cut the mustard for intel chips - it will drop you out of the X server. There is a way to get 3D acceleration using intel chips but it requires fiddling with xorg.conf (check the forums for references).

Streamtuner, which I used regularly, could not be broken, so it could be your iso - very strange. Again md5sum check.

This weekend I will download the peices and join them together an see if there's any errors. But I may upload the full iso if others have the same problem - but that will tie my computer up for 24 hrs - yyrrchh!

Hey CA,
I was curious and did a search - seems like Puppy3 + Puppy4 are not good for Intel chips (intel had outsourced it's linux driver support and updates were non-existant) - but Puppy 2 is. Damn!
I only appear to be a bearer of bad tidings!

I chose Puppy 3 as I could remaster very large isos with pfix=noram and that nvidia and ati have better drivers.

If you look at my dev notes I did start with Puppy 2.14 - that may still happen but it will be build it yourself Ultimate version using a Customised Software Installer.

Cheers

Hello Martin,
Strange that Intel chips would show a problem with later Puppies. Contrary to the info, I've been using Bruno for weeks now (4.31) and couldn't really get either TeenPup 2008 or 2009 (both 2.14 I believe) to work properly. Go figure. Anything I can do to help, don't hesitate to ask...
Thanks for all your help thus so far!
CA
BTW-Bruno even works sufficiently on my EeePC 900A. Using that combo now.

G'day,
I'm so glad this is just an alpha version - Wi-Fi through eth1 is non-responsive! However, normal LAN through eth0 works fine. Need to go back and check where the issue stems from.
I don't think I checked this often - actually I know I did not check this function often - so it may need a little delving to find out what!

MD5SUM

Code: Select all

cd [to directory}
md5sum blah-blah-0.17.iso
This will spit out something like this...

Code: Select all

092c46d4db7dcd81511ec1933520bfc2 blah-blah-0.17.iso
With Puppy 2 you could install the Intel driver through MUs 3DCC - so it had a specific driver available - unlike Puppy 3. But if any other developments have occurred that I have not investigated then the info would be appeciated. And the problem onlty comes from 3D rendering. It will 3D render badly but then crashes the X Server. But I still feel there is a workaround by modifying the xorg.conf.
BTW. With TEENpup you may need to boot with nopcmcia if your booting to a laptop or netbook.

Cheers

Reconstruction issues with Ultimate Edition alpha

#12 Post by Puppyt »

Cheers Martin -

I enjoyed the your live demonstration of Ultimate at the Toowoomba Linux Community extension meet yesterday very much indeed, thanks! The mixture of Gnome, KDE and JWM looks really enticing - as does the three-toolbar arrangement (what other puppy has that?) - but I REALLY want to try that FirePup-FireDog "hybrid" browser you mentioned in your announcement post...

I can confirm calexand's problems with the archive - downloaded in XP and extracted using 7-zip, files "c" and "d" look intact size-wise but return an error message. Downloaded in Puppy (I used dpup477), pzip returns a "bad wrapper ending" for those two files, and might just be cosmetic issues. I downloaded parts c and d again using pwget and this seemed to eliminate the extraction error messages in pzip - but not when re-checked in XP's 7-zip.

Regardless I then used the 'link' script to re-compose the ISO. It eventually generated a "Puppy-Ultimate-0.17.iso" file of 1,963,408 KB and an md5sum of "4B412FD33E8FE3C6A4AD7F641F9AB410", which from your earlier post is just plain wrong. (I used an MD5 checker for XP users, http://www.georgejopling.co.uk/md5check/md5check.html) And then the burn went bad - but that's undoubtedly a different story...

Have you had success yourself re-downloading and re-resurrecting your ISO from mediafire, Martin? I'm just trying to track down where the problem might be - I note that I have to have a lot of space (say about 5GB?) on the partition on which I'm regenerating the ISO, and that could be my main problem,

Best,
puppyt

P.S. The md5-mismatched ISO has:
initrd.gz - 1 227 652 KB,
vmlinuz - 1 741 240
zdrv_301.sfs - 18 362 368
pup_301.sfs - 2 067 169 280
Do these figure gel with yours? If OK, maybe I can just copy those files over and install Ultimate that way...

Hello Martin,
MD5SUM checked bad on mine as well. Did attempt to use on both my Eee and my IBM 8141-2JU Desktop (P4HT-3.0Gig/Intel i915/80 Gig SATA/Gigabit Ethernet/1Gig RAM/Bluetooth/IrDA). Same results with both. Could not get TeenPup to work properly on my IBM, did not try it on my Eee.
Only mentioned the Eee because as well as Intel graphics (I945), it also has Intel HD Audio. It currently runs EeeXP v.2 on the internal HD and Ubuntu Reloaded (an Ubuntu Ultimate Edition knock-off) on a SDHC card.
I use BrunoPup with both machines via 4 Gig flash (pen) Drive with save file on the flash itself.

Ultimate issues

#14 Post by Puppyt »

G'day calexand,

sorry to hear you having grief with most of your puppy installs. Whereabouts does your install fail, that makes it seem like a chip incompatibility issue? Have you started a thread elsewhere about your particular problem - genuine Puppians (not lurkers like me) will be only too happy to help you out.

I have an old laptop on which I had problems getting Puppy running - but it was a pcmcia issue (loading would initiate, but omit to go back to the pcmcia cd-drive to find the pup-XXX.sfs etc). I got around this problem by first running XP on the laptop, copying over from the Puppy CD to XP's 'C' drive the 4 key files in the P.S. of my previous post. After a lot of trial-and-error I chose a puppy with a 'good' GRUB setup (e.g., from BK's official puppies, say 4.20 retro) - apparently there are problems with TEENpup's GRUB, according to very recent posts on another thread.
Note that XP has a nasty habit of renaming the files and/or extensions with capitalizations, so cross-checking again with the CD filenames at this stage is vital.
Then, with a reboot the puppyCD will see the files on C-drive and load as intended. From there I can create partitions and install frugally wherever I please. I've managed to do this with a range of puppy versions on that old laptop - taking especial care not to over-write the grub, and hand-crafting the grub entries for the additional Pupplet installations via geany or some other text editor.

I don't have an EeePC, but perhaps you could try anything from jemimah's Pupeee range first to get the ball rolling and the grub established...
Stick with it!

Cheers

Hello Puppyt,
Don't have any issues with installation of Puppies, per se. The problems with the TeenPup 2008 and 2009 series were that the programs would not work properly, ie~too old versions of Ooo (Ooo not really compatible with Office truly until 3.01), could not get any music players to work with my iPod or generic music player (Slick 20), etc., some programs just refused to work at all...
Just looking for a Puplet similar to Bruno with a few more games. Thought this one would "fit the bill". Looks extremely promising...
Thanks for your info!
Best,
CA

Hello Martin,
Sorry that in your first attempt to provide us lowly "leechers" a truly useful and fully functional Puplet, you are having such difficulties. Don't give up. This is exactly what many of us are looking for, a Puplet of this caliber! I commend you. Even if it never works out for me, there are many that it will be perfect for. Abandon discouragement and thank you.

Puppyt,
Thanks for your help and knowledge, not only on this, but in all Forums, as well.

I will keep an eye on this for progress and if there is anything I can do to help, please ask!

Best to you both!

G'day all,
Development still continues on Ultimate Edition, cos I thinks its fun and a great exercise in what's possible. I never set out to change the world - just some limiting beliefs.
I never give up until all options have been looked at. I have MY RULES always on my desktop..
4. Be persistant and consistant
7. Aim for perfection, but if I don't get there it'll be bloody terriific

One option I am seriously considering is having a base puplet and with an ulitmate addon/update, such as a sfs file - like lighthousepup. In this way the issues that I'm finding with noram would be circumvented. The base puplet would be around 150mbs (no more) - but would essentially be useless until the addon was installed. I am considering that the update would be on the Puplet's Desktop.

Also, having a small puplet would allow frugal installs - the pup_301.sfs is currently too big to load to ram.

Option two is have a base Puplet with a customised software installer so the user can create their own Ultimate Edition.

With the Wireless issue - something is happening during the remaster - I haven't been able to track it down at this point (initially I thought it had something to do with all the Python updates - that still might be the cause but I believe it's something else).

Cheers
Martin
