However, when I select C64simple and click continue the dialog box disappears and nothing happens, just llike before. I presume Frodo is supposed to run.
It is indeed... Frodo pops up for me... and I've rebooted, re-installed and retried... I can only think you have some changes made that may have affected it.

Have you tried booting without a save file (pfix=ram) and then installing the bugfix?
This should help you test that...

fceu updated

FCEU has been updated. The frontend now works perfectly - if it didn't work for you before, it should now..

FCEU and the gtk frontend can be downloaded here

SDLMAME

#33 Post by sc0ttman »

I've made this pet of SDLMAME..
It will work in all versions of Puppy Arcade (I think)..

Type 'sdlmame' in the terminal to get it running.
You need to follow the on-screen instructions in order to get it working...

Download SDLMAME: http://www.multiupload.com/GQ1CQPCNC5

[edit] Can some test whether or not this runs on a Pentium 3 PC?
That'd be lovely...

sc0ttman,

I followed your suggestion and started Arcade 7 with no pupsave, (deleted existing pupsave and started with pfix=ram), immediately applied the fix.

It did not make any difference. When I tried 'C64 simple' dialog box disappeared and nothing happened (I had no ROM files installed).

I cannot see why it does not work for me. Does a script get called by this option? I'd like to look at it if so.

[edit] I forgot to include a symlink in the pet file, but it was present on my system...
I have updated the bugfix file, re-download, all should be fine...

@Nikukyu - Thanks.. Again! :)
I really appreciate your effort and work.. :D

updated bugfix file

#37 Post by sc0ttman »

Updated the bug fix file...

It was missing a symlink to /usr/local/bin/frodo...
Which needed to be added to /usr/bin..

Other links also updated....
Please re-download and install this bugfix! Sorry!!

I used it a while ago - because I love 'rival schools'... :) But never used it in Puppy...

So here it is...

Download Zinc

If anyone does not know, 'Zinc' emulates mainly Namco arcade games such as Soul Edge and so on.. :D

This includes netplay, apparently..

NOTE: It will require OpenGL if you want to play games properly!!!

Anyway, here's the emulator - BUT NO FRONTEND .. :( Simply type 'zinc' in the terminal to run and, and to see usage...

This is not tested, but should run fine once it's setup correctly..
Here are some of its options, to get you started...

Code: Select all

The revised bugfix pet now works for me. I can select C64 Simple and I get Frodo. Great!

With Frodo loaded I did a thorough check on the keyboard and it seems the "=" key is the only one I cannot get. I guess this is a hardware problem. Perhaps I will try selecting US rather than UK at the start of running Arcade and see if that makes the key come to life. I'm sure I'm pressing the right key (just to the left of the return key) but it is the only key on the keyboard that does nothing! Could be awkward if I wanted to enter some BASIC code!

Hi sc0ttman; A suggestion...
I always put any improved versions and add-ons in the first post.
And then I make a new post pointing out the addition in the first post.

At the very least put links in the first post to the posts with them.
That way everyone doesn`t have to look through the entire
thread to find all the work that`s been done on it.

Done...

Just to be clear, they're not really updates or improvements as such, often outdated, or will need further testing before they are considered for inclusion in future versions..

ICPUG, can you post a solution to your Frodo keyboard problem, if you find it...? I will include it in the next help file..

Because SNES9x-GTK does not seem to support the command line, I'm adding Zsnes to this thread as well.. Can't remember where I got it (somewhere on these forums), so I'll upload again..

This is the smallest, most reliable version I have found..

Added to main post as well..

I've sorted the keyboard problem with Frodo C64 emulation.

I had got too focused on the Vice C64 emulation keyboard. This uses the # key (UK keyboard) for the C64 = key. I thought the same would work with Frodo but it just did nothing. With a US keymap loaded it actually gave a ^, but I don't think this key is available on a real US keyboard. We Brits seem to have an extra key.

Anyway, tonight I found that Page Down gives the C64 = key whether a UK or US keymap is used.

There is no need to include this info in a help file. I finally found the help files for Frodo in Puppy Arcade 7, especially:
/usr/local/Frodo-4.1b-US/docs/keyboard.html

The keyboard seems to be as quoted for BeOS (not Unix, strangely, where Page Up gives something different).

Users of Frodo would do well to read the settings.html file in the same directory, especially the limit speed setting. With the default the speed was racing away with constant noise from something internal to my laptop. As soon as I ticked limit speed I got a normal speed flashing cursor and the internal noise stopped!

If there needs to be anything extra in Puppy Arcade 8, maybe it should be a reference to the location of the Frodo Help files. I only found them by tracing back from /usr/bin/frodo via its properties to /usr/local/bin/frodo which I discovered was a shell script so opened it as a text file. This showed me the esistence of /usr/local/Frodo-4.1b-US and the rest was easy. I don't think a noob would find these help files!

The help on the launcher menu points at General Puppy Help and not the Arcade help. Maybe this should be improved.

Now I can have some fun and relive the C-64 days!

Good man! I pressed every key to see what they did, but having never used a commodre (they're a bit before my time) I couldn't really tell what I was doing!!!
ICPUG wrote:If there needs to be anything extra in Puppy Arcade 8, maybe it should be a reference to the location of the Frodo Help files.
Agreed.. Frodo was left in as an 'after-thought' - so people don't need to hunt for C64 BIOS... I'll make sure ALL emulator help files are easily found..
ICPUG wrote:The help on the launcher menu points at General Puppy Help and not the Arcade help. Maybe this should be improved.
Indeed.. I was worried that removing the default help pages would annoy a few people - especially as, unlike many other puplets, Puppy Arcade tends to attract a lot of first time Puppy users....

But I'll create a new HTML page with links to all the original puppy help, plus the emulator help files and so on... I've recently tested Puppy 4.4 actually, and would like to steal a few ideas on this subject...

I found gngeo of a new version here.

http://puppy.cnbits.com

However, because it will not have been possible to open it to the public the way things are going, it regenerated a little.
