Subject description: Missing iso files

Hi All,

Well it seems the abusers are getting the better of me again.

This post is to announce that we will not make it through February as I'm getting blasted by leeches and all 'round beasties of unknown origin.

The puppylinux.ca/asia site will go offline when I pass the bandwidth limit.

Eric

PS Remember to keep your files locally in case I get kicked.

Lousy goings-on there, Eric...sorry you have to put up with such crap Sad

@ ttuuxxx, zigbert - i understand you both have active isos which might need somewhere to camp for a while, or if you just want to upload them for back-up purposes...you're welcome to some space on my VPS, so please just pm me if you're interested... Smile

cheers,
russoodle

Well my bandwidth issue seems to be solved for now.

For some unknown reason my bandwidth usage has dropped dramatically and it's ok for the month of February now.
Seems my host has reset my usage to a lower number...very strange this is (it's a first).

Another strange thing is, I seem to have lost 3 large iso files.
Wolf Pup lost 2 isos in /bugs and Teenpups iso is also gone off the server after a reload of the iso....odd.
I'm still trying to figure out why there are missing files.

So @Zigbert and Ttuuxxx, coolpup etc we are ok now.
@ russoodle Thanks for the help with your VPS server space/bandwidth...Eric

That does sound strange....and the disappearing files too Confused ...but it's great that your bandwidth seems to have been restored, at least..

And ditto CatDude's comment....any time.

Is it possible that someone has set up a "repository" page that simply links to the files on your site? If so, that could explain the bandwidth issues. I believe there are scripts that prevent that type of leeching.
The server logs might point you in the right direction.

Is it possible that you were near the limit when the files were uploaded?
Some server software checks the quota level and if the upload will result in the limit being exceeded, it stops the upload(that's how my server works). Is it possible the server software on your site does a periodic check, and removes files that would result in the limit being exceeded?

Hi Thom,
The disk space is ok...or so says my hosts meter/stats.

Yes hotlinking may be an issue. I found a site a year ago that was an exact clone of my site...ads and all, when we were running Hiawatha web server.

After my post on the bandwidth improving the usage shot up again almost immediately. To me that sounds like someone on this forum saw the post and resumed their leeching...maybe not but sure is a coincidence....hmmm

I miss root access...c'est la vie

@caneri my host has a anti-leech script and theu support has not failed me thus far

I am willing to setup accounts for who ever is interested and setup a post about it last december but only a few people responded..

basically i am trying to get this thing as big and as useful as possible as i can so the puppy community can have the biggest selection of files and some redunancy from other sites maybe

Thanks,

have a blessed day folks

Hi All,

Well it appears I have a problem on .ca/asia.

There seems to be a bunch of iso files missing from the server. This has been a problem for a few months now and I have no explanation to date.

Some of these files disappeared around March 5 but others were much earlier.

@ the ftp account holders,

Please check your directories and re-upload any missing files.

Always remember to keep your backups locally for a restore to any server.

My apologies....I have no solution yet...grrrr

Eric
