I see where YouTube offers .mp4 versions of their video catalog for download. Does anyone know what app would work well to play them? I tried gXine but it was slower than molasses in January.

You might give VLC or mplayer a try. However, MP4s and MKVs tend to use h.264/AVC-encoded video quite often these days (I believe YouTube definitely does), and that tends to require a more recent or powerful system to play the video without lagging or skipping - even if you're not playing HD video.
If gXine isn't playing the videos without being slow, it's possible other programs/apps might have difficulty with it, as well.
