....a few changes.
Ye anciente Dell (
) now runs 1.5 GB RAM; it was temporarily 2 GB, but one of the 1 GB sticks 'died' on me, so replaced that with one of the previous 512 MB sticks. Seems happy with that configuration.The 32GB PATA/IDE SSD is now a 64GB SSD; the Transcend was replaced with a KingSpec - which seems OK.
Additional storage is taken care of by a Seagate 'Expansion' 500 GB USB 3.0 external HDD. I know the Dell is 'only' USB 2.0 (one of the very first to market with it, too!) - yet a USB 3.0 drive still runs faster than a purely USB 2.0 drive, since it more nearly approaches the theoretical maximum throughput for the USB 2.0 standard.
A 7-port self-powered hub plugs into the other USB socket, and allows use of mouse and wireless keyboard 'dongles', plus a Microsoft 'LifeCam' 3000 webcam. And last year I 'upgraded' the original CD/ROM drive for a full DVD drive from a defunct 5100 - the 1100's 'big brother'. Works well, too; plays commercial movie DVDs OOTB with no tearing/stuttering at all. Pretty impressive for a P4!
Puppies - Now running BK's Precise 571 + pemasu's UPup 'Raring' w/3.9.9.2 kernel. (And occasionally I'll run Micko's Slacko 560 on here; I have a self-contained 560 set-up on a 128 GB SanDisk Cruzer 'Blade' formatted to 3 partitions; FAT32 'boot', ext3 'Puppy' partition and ext3 DATA partition. I also have all my documents, music and pictures, plus a good selection of movies; this is my 'go-anywhere' Puppy, which travels with me.)
All in all, it's a very usable set-up. And that idiosyncratic 'Brookedale'-cored video card (the 82845GE/GL) still gives a lovely crisp, clear picture, once it's been 'tamed' with the 'i915.modeset=0' kernel-line 'fix'.
