Works fast. Works good. Slack0 5.7 .exe running inside of Windows 7

This is a triple booter with MX-14 grub 2 doing the boot loading for Windows 7 and Slack0 running inside of Windows 7. Nice and exotic.
Fast as Hell.

Compaq Armada E500 256 RAM

Wary may be best in long run but
Classic 214X -top10 is reliable for solid use on these Compaq laptops from last century, even when only 128 RAM.

live-CD and frugal installs, with swap file
run with no problems on these 10 year old laptops
with various added RAM - see above (recommend get min 256 RAM)
and do keep it simple and basic if needing a workhorse
with no added bling, or swapping of window-managers etc
---------------------------------------------------------------------
[/quote]

I have just purchased an old Armadea E500 like above and find Pup 3 best on this. With Puppy 4.12 with regular kernel and retro 2.6.21.7 I had to manually set up the soundcard ES1978 and upon reboot settings were not saved. Pup 3 had it working straight away using the same kernel as 4.12 retro.

Very strange.http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 441#511441

I had to install acpitool to get a sleep mode, sensor program to get temp info, and writing scripts* to get along with the OS. The bright side of that is, that I'm learning how to do such stuff. But sometimes I would prefer to have it easier.

*Like
- Script for automatic poweroff if battery is empty cause it does it not on it's own.
- same for to high temperatures
- updating flash automatically (AAHRG, security!)

EDIT: Oh, I have fancontrol issues. When my notebook (no laptop :D) comes back from sleep the fan runs all the time. On one side I like that cause it cools my system and the fan isn't stucking, normally it would get to warm cause my Puppy has no program to start it when it gets to warm. On the other side, having it running all the time is not always fun. Yeah, I know there's a program called fancontrol in repository.

HI All
Running Slacko 5.7 on a Acer Asprie
1.4g processor
11.6 lcd
2gig memory
250 gig hard drive
Wifi

Always wanted a small laptop. Love this laptop

Slacko is booted from flash drive.
Remove flash drive and Windows 7 boots instead.

Hardly ever boot Windows anymore.
Only when I need to write a Visual Basic program is Windows booted.
I write the same program using Bacon in Puppy.

Everything just works out of the box.
Glade, Bacon, google earth, Open office, and so on.

When I boot into Windows I cannot believe how slow the machine is
all of a sudden.

I love the fact that Puppy runs in memory and is so lighting fast.

Best Regards
John

You can add the Dell Latitude C840 to the list. Puppy 4.2.1 works great on it.
Also successfully ran Puppy 4.1.2 on a Toshiba Satellite 4000CDT.

ACER TravelMate 4002WLMi (512MB, 60GB)

Works out of the box with slaco 5.7-nonpae. precise 5.7.1 does not work so greate (think it was problems with the video card for some reason). WiFi works fine. I have not tested the modem. I'm currently running from the HD but running of the USB port also works as expected.

Toshiba Latitude L755d running Carolina-Vanguard

#310 Post by mikeslr »

Date: January 29, 2015

Hi All,

Booted into the Toshiba Satellite L755d via a USB-Key install of Carolina Vanguard Release 2. The system was fast and responsive. The only problem being that after setting up sound it was quiet even with volume set to maximum. For more details, see my post here: http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 655#824655

Sound problem solved: http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 863#824863

Note the date above. Carolina-Vanguard is the first Pup I've tried on this machine in about 6 months. Previous Pups tested usually were unable to recognize its sound cards. But IIRC, one didn't recognize its keyboard.

It is probable that Carolina 1.3 will be functional. TahrPup tested -- it isn't.

Edit: 9/25/15
Warning: Install Grub4Dos to the hard-drive at your own risk. The above reported success was with Puppy Frugally on a hard-drive partition but booted via Grub4Dos on a USB-Key. After installing Grub4Dos to the hard-drive Windows 7 would no longer boot. I've never had a problem with Grub4Dos before. Used it to dual boot XP and Puppies on a half-dozen computers, and Puppies and Windows7 on an Acer Aspire D270 and a Dell Latitude E6400.

I am lead to suspect that this is just another of Toshiba's peculiarities by my receipt of a reported mbr problem on a Toshiba L755. The L755 is almost identical to the L775. I don't have details regarding the loss, other than that Vanguard-Carolina was being employed.

Report:

An old Compaq Armada (7400), 333 MHz PII. 256 MB RAM runs lupumini 5.2.8.7. When I flush the cache, it seems to show a memory load of under 60MB. That makes it very comparable to the old 4.11/4.12 Retro (from my recollection).

(the "also works" list includes 4.11/4.12 Retro and 5.25 Retro)

Even got the sound to work (though the internal speakers are pretty poor -- need to try it through some externals, to see if the driver is correct). It did require that I run ALZA to locate the correct driver (it didn't automagically load).

I didn't try pushing it, and didn't connect it to the internet (the wireless card is out, and have also mislaid my USB card -- the single built in is a USB 1.1)

If it runs on this, it ought to run on most anything... ;-)

NEC Versa AX K6-2 450mhz / Packard Bell EasyNote

- Processor: AMD-K6 450Mhz
- Memory: 121MB ram
- OS: Wary Puppy 5.5
- Display: 800x600

more specs:
http://www.nec-computers.com/support2/p ... latform_J3

Previously WIN98 was installed on this laptop (working fine) but slow (compared to todays standards) and ofcourse not safe for internet use.

Had to buy 10pack of cd's because USB boot is not an option
Burned Precise Puppy Retro first got error, tried Warry 5.5 on lower burn settings 4x, verified disc. No error this time
Chose Frugal install on HD with SWAP, all hardware automatically recognized except for wireless printer Epson SX430
Had to download epson .deb file fromhttp://download.ebz.epson.net/dsc/du/02 ... 2d75b73aac and follow this installation guide for epson printers: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 449#466449, I added the printer via appsocket specifying fixed IP adress of printer and then find the right epson id in the list and presto it worked!

- Tekst/Excel editing works fine also possible to wireless print now
- Internet works but today's websites are waaay to "big" too load also navigating sites not optimized for 800x600 is annoying. Stick to simple text/html sites for better experience.
- Startup time is about 1m20sec which is decent!

Not sure what to use it for now its decent for tekst editing and printing. (it has decent clicky keyboard instead of those small chiclet keyboards these days)

Running slacko5.7-2015 derivative of micko's Slacko5.7-nonpae on
ASUS Eee 8G w/orig. SSD and 1Gb ram on a 320Mb partition in a USB-stick.

ASUS Eee 900a w16Gb SSD and 1Gb ram ditto 320Mb partition
This netbook also running Slacko Puppy-XL (slacko 5.5 based). Needs a 1024Mb partition to run. This distro on different USB stick.

I recently found wNOP-0.2 (Puppy 3.0.1 base IIRC) in a pile of old platters. I guess the i915 chipset was a bit new then

#315 Post by michaellowe »

HI Just to let you know Puppy 5.2.5. running fine on the Toshiba Equium A300D, so far so good! Just to add I generally compile most of my pets and packages from source so that way I know it should generally work for whichever dedicated system I have installed puppy on. have never yet learnt how to compile an sfs package yet so I cant comment on that wonderful area of puppy linux brilliance! peace ! 8)

I just started using Puppy a few weeks ago. But my system seems to be working pretty nicely. It's a Dell Inspiron 6400, about 9 years old. I just put a new 1GB hard drive in it. 4 partitions - the 3 listed below plus about a 1GB swap partition. I am running Lucid 5.2.8 as a full install on sda1 (using right this minute). I also have Tahrpup frugal install on sda2. basic machine spec's as follows;

You made me smile. I had an Inspiron 6400 once. It was my father's before it was mine... it's the only laptop I've ever had where I literally used it to death. Motherboard failed, we had worked it so hard. Ha!

Guess I should post this here, as well...

Success Report:

I copied and pasted my entire Sulu1 (lupusuper1) folder onto my old Dell Latitude C640 (1.6 GHz, 1 GB RAM), and it came right up (the only adjustment needed was that my newer laptop supports a better monitor -- I rolled down to the "basic 15 inch" resolution in the settings -- the brightness was very low until I made this change -- if you create a new save file, it gets it right out-of-the-box).

Special Note: my Compaq Presario V5000 is the variant without PCMCIA card slot, Bluetooth, card reader, etc.

I was unable to test:

-Express Card slot: I have been unable to test the Express card slot due to the fact that i currently have no hardware that uses it.
-modem. i was unable to try the modem due to the fact that i have no way of testing it.
-expansion port: I was unable to test this port due to the fact that, like the express card slot, I have no hardware that uses this port.

what i have tested:
Graphics: works
Sound: works
WIFI: works, at least in a full install.
USB: works
Keyboard and touchpad: works.
Ethernet: haven't tried it but its listed as a network interface.
DVD/CD-R drive: works.

I use four 'Pups; Tahrpup, ETP's 'Chromebook' Pup (v.1); Slacko 5.7.0, & rg66's X-Slacko 2.3.2 (570 with XFCE).

These all run very well on my 'big' Compaq desktop. However, on my old Dell lappie (an original 1100, from 2003) the only one that will run correctly is Tahrpup.

When XP went EOL last year, I was looking around for a Linux distro that could replace XP. It used to run like a slug; a 'Netburst'-era single-core Celeron, 128 MB of RAM.....and the most fiendish graphics chip Intel ever turned out in the early days; the 'Brookedale'-cored, 82845G/GL/GE/PE/PV 'Extreme' graphics chip. Nothing about it is 'normal' at all; as MikeB used to say, Intel said 'Sod it' to VESA standards.....and chucked the rule-book out of the window when they built the thing! Awful device.....but it can't be changed, unfortunately.

Works perfectly under Windows, of course. All the Linux distros I tried would install.....but getting a display to work was another story. I tried Slacko 570 and Precise 5.7.1 in the early days, but they were just the same; fragmented, broken display. When Tahrpup came out in November last year (I was put onto it by an acquaintance on the Ubuntu forums), I decided to try it just for the hell of it, not expecting anything different.....and to my absolute amazement, everything worked OOTB, from the moment I re-booted.....even the display.

So it's stayed on there ever since. She's had quite a bit of upgrading in recent months; I replaced the Celeron with a P4 (which improved matters quite a bit); maxed the RAM out to 1 GB.....but the biggest difference has been made by replacing the original 20 GB Hitachi Travelstar with a 32 GB Transcend PATA/IDE interface SSD. This has really speeded up load times; Puppy's up & running in a matter of seconds now.

Best little distro ever! I've always liked the 'micro' distros, anyway; been experimenting with SliTaz for a while now, and have recently started playing around with TinyCore. It's all good fun.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Update:- I now have Slacko 570 dual-booting alongside Tahrpup on the 1100.....by the simple expedient of adding 'i915.modeset=0' to Slacko's kernel line in the 'menu.lst' generated by Grub4DOS. This is straight from 01micko's advice in the release notes for Slacko 570:-

http://slacko.01micko.com/notes.html

That, and upgrading from the A22 to the A32 BIOS (obtained from here):-

http://www.bay-wolf.com/flashbios.htm

.....which allows you to allocate the maximum amount of 'shared' RAM to the screen display buffer. The Dell is now doing what I've been trying to get her to do for months; dual-booting two Pups!

Not bad at all for a nearly 13-yr old 'clunker' (I have a lot of affection for this old Dell; we've been some places together!). It's all good stuff...!

Mike.
