IBM Thinkpad R50e, I duel boot xp and puppy 4.3.1.1 every thinks works

Grubs boot loader disables the "ACCESS IBM", so recovering XP is not possable using the recovery partition. However adding this to Grubs Menu.lst makes it possale.

title IBM Rescue and Recovery

parttype (hd0,1) 0x0b
unhide (hd0,1)

I've run Puppy release 2 on a Compaq 1230, which only had 96 MB of RAM and it seemed to work fine as a browser with a LAN connection. Ran faster than windows 98SE anyway. I could never get the wireless card to run though, but Puppy found all the other drivers including the LAN card.

I am running release 4 on an HP dv6358 laptop with 2GB RAM. Everything works, except I am still trying to connect to my windows network to use its printers. I remastered a live CD and then I will run Puppy in ram in public wifi locations with less fear of picking up malware.

My 1st laptop: Inspiron 4000, p3, 800, 500mb ram. Mfg. yr. 2000?
This was a gift with many hardware problems; added harddrive,
ram, dvd rom, wireless card. Got parts from a couple old broken
macbooks. About 50 dollars invested.

It runs any puppy very well. There were 3 things that I wished it had.
1. A 1.6 processor and more video power in order to watch video
streams without jerkyness, and fullscreen.
2. Usb 2.0 ports for booting from flash without needing cd to boot.
3. Less weight; for hauling around in my backpack while bicycling.

Received exactly what I wanted for Christmas.
Inspiron 700m. Pent. M 1.6, 1gb ram, 12.1" widescreen. Mfg.yr. 2004?
Has 1280x800 native resolution but also does 1024x768
perfectly, which is easier on my old eyes.
Has dvd/cd rw, which doesn't come with the new (and much more
expensive) 12" latops.
Almost 2 pounds lighter than the old laptop.

Has 2 minor issues:
1. The intel 855gm graphics will only play video "files" with correct
color balance using xvesa on the latest kernels.
2. The intel ipw2200 wireless has wpa problems with latest kernel.

Insignificant peculiarities for me.
I'm crazy about this laptop!!

edit:
The wpa problem seems to be part of the "small" iso puppy I was trying. Other versions with new kernel connect okay.

The xorg video color problem doesn't seem to exist in the 4.3.1
barebones pup that jrb is putting together.

1. Advent 9315 (also known as Advent T5250). About 1 year old.
Intel Mobile Core 2 duo T5250 at 1500MHz.
2GB DDR2 ram
Sis mirage 3 graphics adapter
Realtek RTL8187B wifi adapter built-in.

Runs puppy 412, 421 and 431.1 with no problems except, despite lots of help from tempestuous, couldn't get wifi working in 412 nor 421. So only use 431.1 (ttuuxxx's version).

2. Systemax 7521T. ( think this was made by Mitac as model MTC 7521T.)
Intel celeron II 1GHz.
40GB HDD
128 MB ram.
No built in wifi so use Belkin F5D7010 pcmcia card.
Runs puppy 412 and 431. Works wonderfully. Despite its age my G/F loves it as it's so solidly built (just like me :-) ). Plays DVDs happily, the lot.

3. Asus eee 701 netbook.
upgraded to 2GB ram
4GB SSD
Tried everything but best was Puppy Dingo Plus .
Not used any more.

4. Asus eee 901

12GB SSD (4 + 8 GB)
Atom proc
2GB ram
Ran puppy off SSD and also SD card.
Used 431 and jemimah's puppeee-431.
Worked okay but just didn't feel right with any puppy. Can't explain.
Much happier with Crunchbang Linux 9.04
Also sad that 214X couldn't get wifi to work. For a netbook that's a killer..

This laptop is an Acer aspire 9304 running 4.3.1 puppy using an external usb hd. This is dual core 1800mhz AMD
The wifi works as well as the ethernet(only Ethernet works on 4.2.1. because of the broadcom chipset issue.
The inbuilt web cam works on Skype but as yet I haven't got the microphone to work too.
Sound plays well .
You-tube played sound once I installed Java.
Still to try to get my dvb-t to work.

EDITED dvb-t now working well just needed to install the firmware that was sitting in the firmware folder all ready to go.

The other lappy that I have tried puppy on is an Acer extensa 6600 which will boot puppy from a usb mp3 player.
I ran teen puppy on that model and was able to play films and connect with Ethernet. I haven't tried the newer teen puppy on it yet. I think that has a 1600mhz intel processor .

I run frugal Puppy 4.3.1 on a Dell Inspiron 2650 in a triple boot with DSL and Windows XP on three different partitions. Have also run versions from 4.0 onward. Dell is 1.6 GHz, 512 Meg, touchpad or mouse. Makes a halfway decent book reader and juke box too. Runs flawlessly.

One of the reasons for keeping Windows is that this computer has a built-in analog modem that lets me use standard phone lines when necessary. Never got it to work under Puppy.

Try a different video driver. So if you are using gxine, look at the advanced video options.

ravensrest: The modem may be one of those winmodem, software modems.. They aren't too good even w/ windoze..That is why I use the 3Com, pcmcia modems or better yet the LAN/modem combo card.. Puppy uses it no problem.

Since this laptop has only 5 minutes battery life, power failure is an irritation as the power lead also tends to fall out from time to time. So I figured out how to write a script to run every 30 seconds to monitor the power and pop up a dialog warning of power failure, before the battery gives up. This has saved me on several occasions.
yes I did that too as there is no built in ability it seems.
How do I go about that mike? I'm always afraid when I go messing with making partitions.
If there is a spare usb socket and a spare usb format it as swap and plug it in before booting and see if it gets detected..

now I'm hyjacking thee thread and will get carted off by moderators in white coats whilst screaming I love vista and want bill's babies...

Fujitsu Lifebook p2110 circa 2001
867mhz Transmeta "Crusoe" processor
256MB RAM
40GB Fujitsu MHV2040AT UDMA4 HD (21.15 MB/Sec xfer rate)
Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-R2212
ATI Rage Mobility PCI onboard graphics driving a 16 bit 1280x768 display
Intersil PRISM Wireless LAN PCI card
RealTek RTL8139(A)-based PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter

Triple booting Win@K Pro SP4, Xubuntu 9.10, Puppy 4.31

The box was a pass-along, from the mother of a friend who had upgraded to a faster machine and wanted to see it go to a good home. As delivered from Fujitsu, it had a 30GB Toshiba drive and Win XP Pro SP2. She commented it was "slow slow slow" Running XP Pro in 256MB of RAM made that no surprise. Win 2K Pro runs a little better in 256MB,. but takes 7.5 to 8 minutes to boot.

Xubuntu runs but is extremely sluggish.

Puppy 4.31 is installed on an ext4 file system, in a full install with separate 512mb swap partition. Puppy itself is fairly sprightly, but third party apps like Firefox 3.6 and Open Office 3.2 are slow loading.

Pretty much everything works. Puppy drives the screen through Xorg, and handles the 1280x768 display that is the best the video will do. (The Windows ATI driver does 1600x1200, but as a 1280x768 window panning over a 1600x1200 virtual screen. I'm just as happy Puppy doesn't support that...)

Net access is normally via CAT5 cable to a port on my router, but Puppy detects my wireless card. It took a bit of fiddling to get it to see my network: the default choices in the Network Wizard didn't see it. Once I told it to look for a broadcast SSID, it saw my router.

Still can't connect via wifi at home, however: Puppy seems to support WEP and WPA, but not WPA2. since I normally connect via cable at home, I don't really care.

The biggest issue with the box is arthritic disk I/O, resulting in slow loading of large programs. I could theoretically up the RAM to 384MB (the max Fujitsu says it will take) and swap in a faster HD, but this is mostly an experiment to see what I can wring out of ancient hardware, and I'm disinclined to spend money on it.

Puppy is a fairly good fit for the low end hardware, and I wasn't expecting a lot, so I'm reasonably happy.

I installed puppy 4.3.1 from live cd on this older laptop. it has (i think) 512 mb ram 800mhz processor w dvd/cd drive. I couldnt get past grub on dvd so i burned a live cd and got it up n running. When i tried to install to hdd it was getting hung with grub something about the way the drive was formatted , if i recall. so after hunting the forums i found the auto installl frugal script that was posted and it worked perfectly. very quick and easy install. I wish the live cd would offer that script it would save MUCH time and HEADACHES. Overall it seems to work very well . I only wanted it for the wife to use for browsing and email on the counter (wired ethernet) .

Puppy should work with most/all built-in laptop modems. However, 4.3.1-k2.6.30.5 contains an erroneous version of the driver for many (SmartLink) such modems. The k2.6.25.16 version of 4.3.1 contains the correct driver. If you have either the 2.6.25.16 or 2.6.21.. iso, from it copy /lib/modules/all-firmware/slmodem to the same place in 4.3.1-k2.6.30.5.

If the modem is detected as ttySHSF0 but that does not work, there is a way to fix that (but I need particulars) or you can wait for my imminent new modem fix pack, due shortly in the 4.3.1 bugs thread.

How do I Drive the External monitor

#35 Post by jprsa »

Hi, mikeb mentioned he is using an HP laptop where he was able to configure Puppy to drive his external monitor.

i would like to know what steps I should do to replicate that.

i am using an old Dell Inspiron B120 laptop running on Puppy 431 via a USB memory card.

I use Xorg and could not get the external monitor to display an extended desktop, like you can in windows. Right no, my external monitor just displays the same desktop displayed on my laptop's monitor.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
