To use SSL on a server you need to have a SSL certificate. A common misconception is that to get a certificate you have to pay for it, but you can actually make them for free using OpenSSL.

They will be just as secure as any other key, but you key will not be verified so will not appear as trusted to your browser. For personal use this is fine, but I would recommend buying one if its for a public website.

Anyway here is how you can make one:

-First we need to make a private key.
Code:
openssl
OpenSSL> genrsa -des3 -out my.key 1024

You will be asked for a password here to encrypt it with. This will generate a 1024 bit rsa key that is encrypted with triple-DES for extra security.

N.B. - you can change the number of bits, however this can cause problems with certain browsers (IE).

You can view the key using:
Code:
OpenSSL>rsa -noout -text -in my.key

-Then to generate the certificate itself using the private key we've generated just use the command:
Code:
OpenSSL>req -new -sha1 -days 3650 -key my.key -out my.cert

It will ask you a series of questions that will form the request for a certificate to be generated. Fill these in apart from the 'Extra attributes' (challenge password and optional company name). If you do enter a challenge password you will need to enter a password everytime you start your web server.

The "-days" part of the command means how many days the certificate is valid for.

In a total of two commands we've made a SSL certificate for your site, server or a program of your own.

Hope this is helpful,
Jim
