Please note - Quirky is for testing, not yet ready for daily use
http://bkhome.org/blog/?viewDetailed=01337

Noob Testers welcome of course Smile
Use a rewriteable CD or DVD - cheaper and greener
use menu / multimedia / burniso2CD (also covers DVD)
to download and test these quirky ISO files.
Give Barry as much feedback and info as you have patience for

OK downloaded (gosh it was fast - went to check how long it would take and it was downloaded - right connection time etc)

Ensured I had correct second version of 004 (was already to test the first)

Remembered to use quirky pfix=ram at boot
Booting with dots is good
then got flashing cursor top loft
though - oh no
but after a few seconds
it continued booting.

OK first test was trying to get the new nv and Novou drivers
to work

The warning about tweaking the monitor to change the vertical mzh
is a good one
as 75 is too high and I have to set to 70

So tried various combinations
Nothing
did not even try to display
- went to generic driver and that is working OK

Will try some more with the xorgwizard now . . .
Must first get tea, turn on heating (we are having snow) etc

Lobster,

That flashing cursor got my attention as well............thought things had fouled up but it did continue loading.Posting from it now.

I'm stuck at 800x600 resolution, instead of my normal 1024x768, with my onboard Intel 810 graphics. Had the same problem with 001 and 002 but was fixed in 003.

Seems pretty quick in my brief testing so far........

Try the new Fun SDL games
- I really liked the frog game (I did not get real pics of frogs just the word frogs bouncing on screen and the word 'splash')
Barry did you leave out the images - kinda avant garde . . .

No luck with nv or nouvou drivers at lower res

Viewnior (OK also in 4.3.1) is good I used it yesterday to view some pics
- just to mention - coz it is a general Puppy improvement

How are people getting on with Ogle? - does it play anything Embarassed

The Quirky package manager is a mystery to me
Do I download t2 files, Puppy 4 or 5 or reconfigure?

On Quirky 003 I've been using Puppy 4 packages and had no real problems.......I'll probably experiment with some T2 packages, just to see how they work.

I have burnt latest quikry004 and booted from media. However, this time LIve CD is not booting. It shows booting vmlinux etc.... I have tested Quirky 004 in Old as well as New Machine. However, the result is same. I have done checksum of ISO file. No mismatch in the checksum. What to do now?

NO!
I have not released an official Quirky 004!

I created an iso file with everything embedded into the kernel, for testing by the guys who want to get Puppy booting on the OLPC.

It is not a general release, has too many unresolved issues. I have already clearly stated this.

I even put it in a special 'test' folder on ibiblio.org.

I don't want it to be used as a general release, when I haven't tackled some of its outstanding issues. I will wait for ttuuxxx and the other OLPC guys to download it, then I'm removing it from ibiblio.

BarryK,

I actually read the "readme" file......just wanted to see how the single-file idea would work. And it works pretty well. Smile

Before it disappears the Lamesmbxplorer for those on networks might be worth testing or just test on 4.3.1

Worked perfectly for me as a frugal install. On my hardware there is no advantage over conventional Puppy. However, it was fun to test the concept. Smile

Subject description: Tried Quirky 004 on my Classmate and Pc2Go

I tried Quirky 004 on both. With the Classmate, I got the boot screen and kernel loaded. After the kernel, the Classmate re-started and I was back at the boot screen. I have to try a few things.

Quirky 004 worked fine with the Pc2Go (commercial version of Classmate). It booted properly and ran. The screen resolution was correct. I had to pick 800x600, but the display of various windows was correct. Upon shut down, I noticed there was no way to save the session. I did try to use the wireless networking. It seems everything is installed correctly. But, the wireless adapter does not seem to be turn on. The control buttons turn on and off the led for the wireless adapter. WLAN0 is present. Manually setting it up (ifconfig wlan0 up) does not help. Pwireless does not detect the network. The command, iwlist wlan0 scanning, returns no information. Once again, more exeperimentation is need with the networking.

Quirkly 004 is very interesting to me. Especially with have everything in the kernel. Thank you, Barry for trying this out.

Hi Barry I haven't managed to get it boot on Xo but I'm still working at it.
On another note 004 works fine on my Desktop pc, the same as 003 did, the both nvidia drives still don't work, I had to use the Generic drive and still have the black background in the menu icons, but like I said it seems just as solid as 003 was, the boot time was somewhat longer, but once the desktop was loaded it ran fine. looking forward to future releases Smile

ttuuxxx,
Raffy reported that he got the kernel to boot on the XO, but then got an invalid-op-code.

I have now rebuilt the one-file Quirky and the kernel is now configured for a Geode GX1 CPU. That should fix the invalid-opcode problem. See announcement:
