Laptop's modem not detected by Stardust Sub_title: but Dpup managed it okay |
|
I planned to install Stardust 2 in a friend's laptop, but it couldn't
detect the modem. I tried the "manual install" by clicking on the
buttons for ttyS0, ttyS1, ttyS2 and ttyS3 to no avail. At this I
was stymied, so I abandoned my plan to install Stardust, and tried
installing Dpup -- and Dpup found the modem immediately, calling it
/dev/ttyLS0 (if I recall correctly).
So, I'm wondering whether all I needed to have done to install Stardust
was to edit /etc/wvdial.conf and set the line to:
Modem = /dev/ttyLS0
Does this highlight a shortcoming in Stardust? -- that it can't detect
the modem if it's /dev/ttyLS0

The biggest modem-drivers is not included in Stardust.

That may be so, but I don't think that addresses my question.
Even before the system goes looking for the appropraiate driver, it
has to detect that there is a modem and determine what model it is.
Stardust failed to find any modem, yet all along the modem was
sitting there as /dev/ttyLS0 !!!
So my question is, would setting modem=/dev/ttyLS0 in the
config file have constituted what is meant by manual install?
Is that all that's involved?
BTW, I myself am using Stardust, it works just fine with my 500MHz
desktop and external modem.

The problem is probably that Puppy 4.3.1 has a daemon running (/etc/rc.d/init.d/slmodem) which I also has removed from Stardust.
Initially Stardust was build for my personal purpose. It seems that Stardust has got some users, so I will consider to put back the modems.
