ARM netbook

#17 Post by technowomble »

I just found this thread, having picked up a refurbished Datawind Ubisurfer ( which uses a Samsung ARM processor ) for 45GBP ( Price new 160GBP! ). It seems to be running a Debian based distro, but I'm having wifi issues - sees my access point but doesn't connect. I've e-mailed tech. support, maybe I should suggest they take a look at jermimah's Pwireless2!

i would have thought that ubuntu and debian had already been there so just follow them along for now
When talking of a reference device
I was referring to a widespread ARM device
- that has not really emerged
As has been pointed out supporting many devices is
difficult.

The explosion of webpad computers
may well allow an ARM mainstream device

The emergence of Dpup (Debian package base)
and the Ubuntu package base for 'Lucid' Pup
http://puppylinux.org/wikka/Puppy5
will allow us to make use of the wider Linux expertise
and facilities

Puppy is OPEN

The Guy from Italy explain more about his "port"? Crosscompilation to an ARM computer of MicroCore, the TinyCore smallest version.
http://tinycorelinux.com/forum/index.ph ... c=8863.msg

I know nothing on how to read italian and I barely grasp English and Google is bad at doing Italian to English but if I get it he actually do cross compilation?

What is cross compilation.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cross_compiler
A cross compiler is a compiler capable of creating executable code for a platform other than the one on which the compiler is run.

Cross compiler tools are used to generate executables for embedded system or multiple platforms.

It is used to compile for a platform upon which it is not feasible to do the compiling, like microcontrollers that don't support an operating system.

It has become more common to use this tool for paravirtualization where a system may have one or more platforms in use.

Not targeted by this definition are source to source translators, which are often mistakenly called cross compilers.

not an ideal solution though

I got a pretty good translation with google by putting the url into it

see http://preview.tinyurl.com/5u27lg3

It has to be remembered also, this is for the WM8505, and the final comment by Vinnie sums up,
"Ok, well not knowing the topic I avoid beating about the bush
The speech here on the arm of the Forum has done often is not possible to create a single distribution for all subarchitectures that are there.
It's a bit 'That's why I pulled the string on the understanding that you create, because obviously right now there is no standard arm, and then everyone should take the trouble to compile for the version you have and then share it with others along with packages .
It is hoped that in future architecture has prevailed over all others not otherwise ever be able to take advantage of the arm."

I guess one have to be a native user of English to grasp the translation that Google make of that TCL forum page.

Thanks for the tinyurl

He is not alone doing these things. Here is another one.

So I've taken some early steps with the Linux kernel released by VIA last week. Very early days so far.Up at http://github.com/pr...s/kernel_wm8505My notes so far about the kernel build/install process are on the README on that page.

If you're interested in building kernels for WM8505, I suggest cloning this git repository instead of working from VIA's tarball because a few minor things have been cleaned up (and the repository has a copy of kernel config for M001, etc.)

Please share anything you discover or improve.I'm hoping VIA will come to the party with the binary parts, otherwise the next step is probably going to be attempting to reverse-engineer and replace all the binary-only video components.
And most likely there are others too. I did put this in the google search bar.

wm8505 linux

that produced a few entries that maybe can give some info.

I agree, how does one know which ARM that will be the winner in the race. All of them being slightly different from each other creates a lot of obstacles to get linux working on them. Only Android have the money to do things.

Unless someone dedicated comes along and make some wise choices and the rest get excited and follow that person and it becomes the standard.

Depends on the Hardware folks too. They only make those things that sell well so very fast something can get outdated and not longer available.

But that is true for most hardware. Whom would ahve thought that CD was going to become this absent on Netbooks and the I-p-a-d has no CD drive either. Some years ago I thought that every computer would use a CD drive always :)

Okay I am only in this for the fun of it. I would love to have a Kindle or something like that with a battery time of days instead of 2 to 4 hours.

And without any Fan that makes noise each and every minute getting hot in the summer. Silent surfing hearing the birds outside and not a dominating Fan running like mad.

The possibility of Puppy ARM or PARM now has cheap reference hardware the Raspberry Pi board :)

Several developers are keen on starting somewhere
This is an inexpensive option, We will then be in a position
to add touch screen support and move into further devices
in the future.

http://puppylinux.org/wikka/PARM

Is Linux Kiss still an option?
Any tips?
