We already have cheap PCs for Puppy, what uses least power?

What works, and doesn't, for you. Be specific, and please include Puppy version.

400 mhz

#3 Post by raffy »

400 mhz for a CPU (in the low-power laptop shown there) is a good compromise between speed and power consumption.

The top-of-the-line in the x86 processors used to be the Geode, with the GX466 still being used by top distributors of thin clients. The LX800 is usable enough for netbooks, but where has it gone?

Ah, the Edubook uses the new xcore86, a 586 processor. It's worth testing with Puppy. DMP sent me a unit but alas, there are some packaging issues that are delaying my progress.

(Michael Barnes of norhtec, a Puppy acquaintance, is the top guy on top of the xcore86 project.)

Great idea to start this topic Aitch!

The whole Gecko concept is wonderful. (modularity, AA-batteries,etc..) I wonder if there will be a version for grown-ups, say with a 12" screen ?
( my eyes are getting older, 8.9 inch is just too small.)

Is there any news from the ARM-front? The big breakthrough was announced for this winter (summer in Southern hemisphere), but there is not much ARM incarnated yet, it seems.

I am writing this on a lovely Atom 330, which has lots of power in comparison with the machines above, but it is a noisy beast. ( If anyone knows how to passively cool this Asrock 330 ION, I would be most grateful!)

Bert

see here

http://www.techspot.com/review/227-asro ... page5.html

The small fan behind the h/s is the noise source

You could try disconnecting it, adding a dropper resistor, or seeing if it can be slowed down using erikson's tips here

Good Luck
