Sub_title: I had a go but got wrapper exieted with a error

I want Blender 2.5 for Puppy. http://www.blender.org/download/get-25-alpha/ because even though it is still an alpha it is so much more intuitive and pretty than everything Blenderish that has gone before. If you haven't been able to get into Blender before, this has gotten rid of a lot of the complexity that was getting in the way.

I'm currently playing with it on my XP machine but I have a suspicion it will be even quicker on Puppy.
I already have an older version of Blender (2.48a) working from a pet (I think it was a pet, could have been an sfs) some kind soul posted to these forums. They also posted all the dependencies as pets and gave advice about how to edit a file or two, I think to switch graphics acceleration, either on or off I don't remember. But without the help available here on this forum I would have had no chance.
Anyway I figured, with all that ground work done, all I would have to do was download the newest Blender, switch it for the old one, and it would "just work".

I seem to remember I got hold of the latest Thunderbird by simply downloading the tar.gz and clicking on it. This opened up an extractor which told me it would extract the files to a directory of my choosing. Following some advice here on these forums I deleted the default option of /root/downloads down to just /root. When I clicked OK a shiny new folder appeared in my root window and inside was an icon I could click to run the app, or even drag to the desktop. Mint!

But when I tried this with Blender...
... it did make a shiny new folder, but it left me with the far from reassuring warning that the wrapper had exited with an error. I decided to press on bravely and opened the new folder. All it has inside that looked remotely worth clicking was a file called blender-softwaregl, but when I click it nothing seems to happen.

I'm hoping that I'm just doing something stupid and noobish, but of course there is the possibility that Blender just won't work with Puppy 4.3.1 Crying or Very sad

Can anyone suggest where I'm going wrong?

P.S. Will there ever come a time when I can download a tar.bz2, click on it and Puppy asks me, "would you like me to install this spiffing looking app for you? You just click yes or no, I'll do the tricky stuff"

P.S. I love Puppy, it runs like lightning, even on my Jurassic old lappy.

I often get the wrapper exited with an error a lot with tar.gz's but they still seem to work. I suspect there is a different file you should be clicking on or even opening from a terminal. Are there any folders called make or install or (even) readme?

If there is a readme it is probably worth investigating Very Happy
I will download the same file and see what I get but it might take a while.

And as to the first ps. get yourself a google (gmail) account and log in to this page
http://code.google.com/p/puppy-development/issues/list?can=1&q=&colspec=ID+Type+Status+Priority+Milestone+Owner+Summary&cells=tiles
and start a new issue! I Very Happy will vote for it Very Happy

Ok, downloaded the file and left clicked. pzip opened and I extracted cleanly. No wrapper failed to exit for me.
There is a readme file and it would be quite a good idea to read it! There is also a hidden folder so you will need to click on the icon in the rox toolbar to show hidden files. Pair of binoculars in my rox but it can be an eye I believe. You need to move the hidden file according to the readme. (dam, those things are helpful /just a little sarcastically/ Wink )

Hi thanks for the quick suggestions! Unfortunately I haven't quite got the hang of things yet.

When I left clicked, something called Xarchive opened, the thing that reported the wrapper errors and left a corrupt unpacked directory. I couldn't find pzip on my computer, but I found peazip_portable-2.5.LINUX.GTK2 on the internet, PuppyLover had a link to it. Is that similar? (Strangely when peazup started it asked to be pointed to my desktop directory, I didn't think Linux had such a thing - just root and home directories and such like.) When I used peazip to unpack the file, it also only partially succeeded and said it had encountered, not one, but two fatal errors. After all this fooling about my corrupt little Blender file seemed to be unaltered. Should I have deleted it before trying to unpack it with another archiver?

The corrupt little folder full of rubbish I have which is calling itself blender-2.5-alpha0-linux-glibc27-i686 doesn't have any readme files. The only things in there to read are the Python licenses - which seem to have made it through what seems to be the decidedly hit and miss Linux installation process.

Any other ideas? Is pzip an app from a previous version of Puppy. I added peazip via a tar.gz, did I do it wrong? Is that why it failed?

I'm willing to keep trying if anyone has any other ideas. I encounter these tar.bz2 files a lot when I'm looking for the apps I want and it would be great to be able to use them.

OK progress.
I redownloaded the file, and this time it unpacked without any problems.

I'm such an idiot, that should have been the first thing I tried. Embarassed

I take back unreservedly all the bad things I said about XArchive and Puppy Linux in general.

I also snooped out the .blender file. In my version of Puppy I used the giant eye. And I copied it to what I guess is my home directory. It seems to be called "-" actually the hyphen is more wiggly, but I don't know how to type it.
I still cant find any executable file though.
Is there another step that I'm still missing?

I followed what you tried, 2.48 runs fine in 4.3.1 but untar 2.5 and run "blender (the executable in the extracted folder) and nothing happens. If you open a console and go to the blender folder and execute "blender" from the command line you get "/lib/libc.so.6: "GLIBC_2.7" Not Found (required by blender)

So, basically, puppy 4.3.1 is packaged with GLibc 6.x and Blender 2.5 requires GLibc 7.x.

Wow thanks for finding that out.
I never would have been able to work that out.
Are GLibcs things that are easily updated?
I'll start Googling around and see if I can find out.

Hi, sorry I was quite ill for a few days and couldn't / wouldn't get to a computer.
I thought that the .blender folder contained the GLIB stuff. I don't have the folder on my system any more as I deleted later the same evening so I can't check.
Check to see whats inside the .bender folder and if it is the correct GLIB stuff then I am guessing the folder isn't where belnder expects it to be. You could try moving it to a different directory but I can't suggest where offhand! Sorry!
If the GLIB stuff is not in the .blender folder there might be a pet of it somewhere. I will try searching for you but honestly and truthfully, don't feel 100% yet so don't hold your breath!

STOP!

Hold the phone!

Let me take a wild guess here....you don't have the 431 devx.sfs installed do you....
So go herehttp://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/puppylinux/puppy-4.3.1/devx_431.sfs
and get it. now put it in /mount/home which should be the same place your pup431 sfs is.
Open menu-system-bootmanager and stick the devx.sfs in to the load at boot window. Reboot and try doing the blender thing all over again.
If you still get no joy read this thread and try againhttp://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=351502

I did have devx on my system, as a pretty random earlier attempt to solve this problem.
I looked at the thread you suggested and I have a glibs2 folder too, just like the poor fellow in the thread.

Something tells me it would be a bad idea to just overwrite the old folder with a spanking new number 7 version.
I'll keep Googling, see if anyone else is having these issues.
