Pupppy Linux doesn't start on my old Celeron 400

#1 Post by ginco »

I'm trying to boot Puppy on my old Celeron 400 (mendoncino) PC, without success. At boot time it stays with the CD for a while, then switches to HD installed OS.
I don't have any opportunity to specify any option: it switches without "any comment".
The mastered CD looks good (I've tried on a different PC and it works) and the CD reader as well (I tried with XUBUNTU distribution).
Is there anything I can do to get it booted?

Thanks in Advance
Giancarlo

Have you enabled the PC to boot from CD initially?

Also have you tried using a different CD-R disc, you might have a bad burn.

Thanks for the quick replay.
Yes, the PC boots without problems if I use boot cd from another distribution (Xubuntu), so booting from the CD is enabled and working fine.
I've been also using the same CD on another (newest) PC, and it boots on Puppy without any problem, so the mastered CD looks ok, too.
I've also tried downloading and re-mastering the ISO, but got the same result.

Each new iteration of Puppy tries to include support for new hardware. There is also an attempt to retain support for older hardware, however, there have been instances where older versions of Puppy have worked better if you have a really old machine. I would recommend you try one of the older versions or a newer version that is listed as retro (which uses an older kernel). I think ttuuxxx has been doing a lot of work on an update of version 2.14. I don't think the project is complete yet, but he's been having a lot of success.

You could also try Slaxer Pup. It uses some of the guts from Slackware people and has a very different hardware detection system. I've been using it for a while now and am very happy. I can't say for certain that it will work better with older hardware, but for the price of a cd, it's worth a try.

Maybe a good start would be to give more precise info, like what version of puppy you try to boot from, as well as hw details.
Time savers:
Find packages in a snap and install using Puppy Package Manager (Menu).

Use peppyy's puppysearch

wow! A lot of support, very short time: great forum!
I'm sorry, I don't have motherboard details with me, only the CPU (see my first post). Anything else I need to post on hw config?
I'm trying to install latest version, from the pup-431.iso image.

Thanks.

Try pup431small.iso.
Or any other from http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dis ... l-puppies/

Old specs may need old kernel...
