How to boot Puppy from a PCMCIA/CF card?

#1 Post by ceedy »

For no real reason other than it seems a good idea, i've been trying to get a lowly Tosiba CS110 laptop to run Puppy.

having only a floppy drive and no usb .. I found a PCMCIA adaptor and CF card. which reads ok in the Tosh.. and will probably have to wake up from a floppy, as its very limited in the booting.

But currently installing to the CF card on my main XP PC for ma Puppy CD rom .
All runs excellently from the CD . used the unversal installer to install puppy on the CF card in a Card reader. all seems installed correctly wirh no problems.

Go to boot of the CF card for a test in main PC and

its boots up .
says loading drivers needed access disc drives .... done
then says searching for puppy files in computer disk drives...

pup-431.sfs not found dropping to intial ram disc console.
//bin/sh : can't access tty: job control turned off..

oooer!! whats going on ?.

As the file is there on the cf card . and named correctly

any help peeps

thanks

PUPvirg..LOL

First suggestion would be to try a retro version with an older kernel though you may need a particular boot parameter for a cf card...others may advise you on this.
Otherwise you seem pretty close to success

My suspicion is that you need to modify the menu.lst to find the correct location for the puppy files on the CF; See here

or here

24mb ram is pushing it, though I believe 01micko got a 486/24mb to run...slowly?

try turbopup

or muppy embryo [user puppy pw linux]

http://puppyisos.org/isos/2008-07-to-12 ... sh/embryo/

there were earlier versions known as barebones also

see history note
Puppy 1 uses an earlier Linux kernel and may offer better support for some older hardware. In Puppy 2 you will find increased speed, more powerful applications such as Inkscape and Gparted, and the Universal Installer. Puppy hardware recognition is now rivalling that of Knoppix and has surpassed XP for older equipment. Puppy 1.09CE was the last in the 1 series.
wolfpup included 1.09CE in his Retro Pup 1.03.iso here

best of luck, though would recommend to max out your memory

Your old satellite will take an upgrade to 40mb - 32mb edo, buy on ebay/craig'slist,

eg us-ebay $8+6post for 2x32mb http://preview.tinyurl.com/ybbzam3

most people recommend full hdd install &/or a minimum 64mb swap file with low ram pc's
If trying frugal try typing

Code: Select all

puppy pfix=noram
at the 5 second startup page

bonus: attached user maintenance manual :D

I think you need the options like "pdev1" and "psubdir" in syslinux.conf / extlinux.conf.

16 MB ram:
