Yes, the announcement seems to have been missed, but USB 3 is in the new kernel!
Linux is the first OS to support it! YAY!
Reportedly running at up to 4.8Gbits/sec - 10 times faster than existing USB 2 [yes - I know the reports about true speed!],
it is also, apparently backward compatible, and will run at 480Mhz in USB 2 slots

Flash drives are out already, but obviously, still pricey at around $75-90/32Gb rising to $300 for 128Gb

I foresee the day when the only connector a computer needs is USB 3. I believe it can potentially handle any existing serial protocol including HDMI and Gigabit Ethernet. What more could you want?

I wish they had added a hardware requirement to the USB-3 protocol -that of having a locking connector so that dummies don't disconnect their device when mounted Sad

Flash, until I can afford USB 3, I find my firewire connected drives perform MUCH faster than usb 2 [and have the advantage of connecting to my mate's MAC when he visits Wink ]

This is also compared to eSATA, which SHOULD be faster, but gets limited by the USB port also [though should be faster on dedicated eSATA port]

here's the explanation

http://www.directron.com/firewirevsusb.html

see Editor notes 1&2 before the conclusion
