ttuuxxx,

I've had some of the same problems mentioned above, however, Barry's Karmic upup had the same three problems below and were easily corrected.
1. On the Nvidia issue someone suggested to run the test mode instead of xorg or xvesa and if the test failed to edit the driver to read "nv". It worked on Barry's version and yours also.
2. Next problem was that alsaconf would not work. The solution there was to copy the alsaconf and mktemp files from Barry's upup476 which worked on Barry's and your version.
3. Next problem was that CUPS would not work, the solution to both was to install the cups-1.3.10-1uj.pet from the woof repository.
4. The last problem I've noticed hasn't been solved and was not a problem with Barry's version. Seamonkey crashed unexpected even on the forum site. That didn't bother me since I never use Seamonkey and I installed your new Firefox 3.5.5 that you posted on the dpup topic. At first, it appeared to work fine, however, it has crashed a number of times also on the forum site, nothing exotic.

Still checking it out, and I'm sure that I'll discover some exciting new features you've added, but haven't run across them yet.

Cheers, :)

Installed on my P3 test box w/ Intel i810 graphics ....no problem.

I can confirm the browser crashing problem......both SeaMonkey and PuppyBrowser repeatedly crashed to the point of being unusable. Downloaded Skipstone, same problem.

Now posting from Opera 10 and it appears to be stable.

When I first attempted to install, Upup 4.50 cd wouldn't boot., would begin booting the kernel and then "boot error".I knew the disc was good having tried it on other computers so I swapped optical drives and end of problem. Luckily this test desktop uses hot swappable laptop optical drives so it was no big deal to swap out the cd drive for a dvd drive. The original cd drive is good, it just doesn't like Upup I guess. :)

Anyway...back to testing....

Another Machine test...

P4 3.0ghz with Radeon X1650 256Mb 4Gb RAM M$ wireless keyboard and mouse....

Unfortunately no xorg and no Xvesa, but does recognise keyboard and mouse and they work....This all sounds very reminiscent of original dpup...which we fixed by upgrading to Debian Sid Xorg....Xvesa has always been very iffy in non Puppy Puppies...

Cheers

ttuuxxx,

In my never ending quest for a browser that will run in Upup 4.50 without immediately crashing I can report that Opera 10 is still working fine with zero crashes.

I have tried, in no particular order, FF 3.5.5, FF 3.5, SeaMonkey 2.0, Skipstone, NetSurf and they all crash within a minute or two of use.

Right now I'm using Firedog , an updated pet of FF 2.0.0.20, and it seems stable.Probably give Firepup a try tomorrow.

It appears that for some reason the new Mozilla based browsers simply aren't working in Upup.

Been running this quite a bit the last couple of days and other than the browser problems every thing else seems to basically work.

I tried on my laptop.
First with a upupsave file I had from a previous upup476 version
That didn't work

Then I started with pfix-ram

Xorg didn't work I got always back to the command prompt

Then Xvesa
I came in 800x600, but could change to 1024x768
But when shutting down, I got the dreaded and still unresolve problem, that I wasn't presented with the panel to save the session to a save file.

Any idea?

EDIT
Also when I want to see my google and yahoo mail, after some seconds SeaMonkey just closes. Not very handy
I have 256MB ram and use a 282MB swap file.

EDIT1
I tried SeaMonkey 2.0 and have the same problem
Strangely I can post in the puppylinux forum, however I noticed that the screens are rendered twice.

yes beem this one is a pre-alpha, lol Barry didn't do much testing on it, I think I might try 4.3 woof for XO Since I don't have much spare time, really just the weekends and a couple hours a night, Plus the next Dpup is scheduled for the end of the month and I can't put things on hold that long, hmmm there's also Spup.

I have been using uPup since Barry posted 4.32. I have even managed to build one with Woof that included a few tweaks from Barry's default build.

I am happy to see the interest in uPup because I think it is the one for me. One reason is that it is the only Puppy variation that will run SRWare Iron 4.0.227 beta--and it runs it very well for me--not to mention fast. SRWare Iron -> http://www.srware.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=833

Here are the few things I have managed to figure out in case they might be useful to anyone.

1. The first time uPup boots xorgwizard selects the fbdev video driver, which doesn't work (on my setup of course). Therefore, i use e3 /etc/X11/xorg.conf to change the driver to vesa and it will boot. Then I can install the video driver that is right for my card, the radeonhd driver which is *not* included in 4.32 or this 4.50. I go to the Ubuntu Package Search page http://packages.ubuntu.com/ and search for radeonhd in karmic and download xserver-xorg-video-radeonhd_1.2.5-1_i386.deb and then just click to install. I can then exit to a prompt and run xorgwizard which will now select the radeonhd driver.

2. With the radeonhd driver I can also download the glx/dri files and install them to get glx and dri.
  • libgl1-mesa-dri_7.6.0-1ubuntu4_i386.deb
    libgl1-mesa-glx_7.6.0-1ubuntu4_i386.deb
    libglu1-mesa_7.6.0-1ubuntu4_i386.deb
    mesa-utils_7.6.0-1ubuntu4_i3
With these debs installed I can run glxgears and get about 1500 fps per 5 seconds.

3. And it just got better. For some reason I would get flashing horizontal patches when the program wine did anything. Just quick flashes but very irritating. I tried to install the proprietary fglrx ati driver from Ubuntu packages but could not succeed. I downloaded the ati driver install program from ati (ati-driver-installer-9-10-x86.x86_64.run) which needs to compile the driver on your machine. Therefore i got the kernel sources for 2.6.30.5 and also installed the devx file upup_devx_432. But no deal. Then I luckily ran across this post from Sit Heel Speak, http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 69&t=48922 and downloaded and installed his pet/fix (200MB). I tried again and the ati install program ran beautifully and claimed to have succeeded. Sure enough, on the next restart of X I had the fglrx driver along with hardware acceleration. I ran the fgl_glxgears program and got 15000 frames per 5 second--yes, 10x faster. Plus the problem with wine has gone away. On this basis I am wondering if we ought not to recommend that people download and compile their own drivers from ati rather than try to make one size fits all pets?

You can probably see why I am feeling good about the uPup branch. It has 1) the latest infrastructure so that new programs such as SRWare Iron will run, 2) it is capable of compiling new drivers such as the ati set and presumably other cutting edge versions of programs, and 3) it is easy to customize by searching the Ubuntu Packages repo. There is a 4th advantage too; everyone in the Linux world makes sure their programs run on Ubuntu, so uPup gets the benefit of that.

Hi playdayz hmmm a 200MB gcc fix pet package OMG thats a bit extreme, Wonder why Sit Heel Speak didn't post a link here?. I wonder if we can rebuild the gcc with newer one and chop 100MB off?

yes ttuuxxx, it seemed like overkill, but I think the part I needed may have been very small, and Sit Hell Speak made the ultimate devx. I was in no mood to argue--it worked!

The devx for 2.14X is probably the newest one next to this one(older gcc from 3 series, newer backend as you know), its about 86MB and if I add cmake, cvs, git to it its still around 100MB. So yes I think it might be worth looking at the pet. Or recompile Gcc, Man I wish Barry would release woof version with working devx's this one and dpup both were damaged out of the box. The only thing I removed from the default woof was a couple of desktop icon themes. Nothing that would break the devx, I made sure that for the first release it would be as pristine as possible. I think a bit of trouble shooting with the default devx and use parts from 200MB might do the trick.

I think you're right ttuuxxx, all I did with Dpup's devx was to go through it and track where it failed...the changes were minor and for the most part silly (e.g using busybox version of mv instead of full version, and same for mkdir...)

Cheers

ttuuxxx, the 200MB is not the half of it. it extracts to almost 600MB! I kept saying, "Where did all that memory go?" But somewhere in all that it has the fix.

OK, consider it posted:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=48922

Heh, I didn't want to stick my neck out until I saw someone else using it successfully

No doubt my PET can be pared down hugely. I did not take the gposil appoach, because I wanted a kernel *now*, not a week from now, so I took the Out house-sink approach by simply recompiling gcc with almost *everything" enabled and not bothering to strip it.

If you enable only the two languages c and c++ then the PET will shrink by...mm, I'd guess at least half, that's a start. Leaving out libgcj will probably chop another, mmm, I'd guess 30-40 MB out of it. Then go through and strip everything that can be stripped, and it should begin to approach a Puppy level of svelteness if you turn it into a combined devx (in case of duplicates, keep what's in the PET and delete what's in the devx). At the moment, though, I just don't have the time to do anything more than just provide this fattest of sheep. Someone else will have to go through it with the shears.

PS Oh yes...you probably don't need to compile it with "--enable-debug" either. I've been using it for about two weeks now and have not seen it hiccup.

Ok I'll give it one last shot :) I'll download the 200mb devx, Bootup K-Upup just to get the devx working, then I'll make a 12gb pupsave and compile the same gcc with less extras and bring the size down. Cross my fingers, lol

In my continuing quest to find a browser that will run in Upup 450, I installed the FF 2.0.0.7 pet. Launched it from the terminal and when it crashed about 30 seconds later I got an error message.
