Hello
I love the idea of this and will install tomorrow, one question though, I have puppy 4.31 and pupeee on usb sticks, should I wipe it and have a complete reinstall or is it possible to just change a couple of the files (I'm guessing initrd and vmlinuz) on the stick, also my pupsave file will it still be compatible ?
hartelijk dank

Goedemorgen gonkbag,

To update, replace the initrd.gx, vmlinuz and pup-431.sfs.
And yes, you can use your 355 save file.

Succes.

btw, a beta version of browserlinux with chrome browser:

puppymartin,

Thanks for Browserlinux357.

Have you considered adding jemimah's "ramboot" to your "init" script in initrd.gz?
A frugal install of a puplet that's dedicated to web browsing, runs totally in ram, with no mounted 'sda1', that throws away the pupsave.2fs on shutdown; sounds like a fairly safe way to surf the web.
I did this with your Browserlinux355 and I like it. So I'll try it again with this one.

gyro

Edit: It works, I have attached the initrd.gz I used, just rename it.

package manager to extend browserlinux

#19 Post by nsh »

Hey. I downloaded browserlinux, and it works great on the (ssdless) eee900 i bought for my girlfriend (who's rather linux-illiterate). Other puplets have trouble with the sound/wireless/erata. However, I want to add some other software, such as abiword, amsn/pidgin, but am unable to find the package manager in /usr/share/applications.

Somebody in freenode#puppylinux assured me there was a manager in browserlinux. Could there be some reason I can't see it?

Alternatively, any other suggestions of a base from which to build a simple and usable puppy for my girlfriend that will have the eee900 hardware (particularly the wireless) as happy as browserlinux?

Many regards,

Lauri

puppymartin, Browserlinux 360 looks great and works great! thanks for making it available.

Browserlinux Chrome didn't see my DSL modem, but i had 360 online in minutes. i love the small size and the choice of included packages.

Beste Martin,

Thanks for making browserlinux! I like it a lot because of the minimal package. adding PET's also works very well, i've installed mplayer, skype and transmission.

I just found out about a puplet called 'upup' which is capable of installing deb files. a combination between browserlinux and upup would be the perfect operating system for my eee, because i would like to install a few .debs.
any chance of such a distro coming out in the future?

the dutch version (351) is now running very well from a USB-drive on my eee :D

best regards / groetjes Ralph

Browserlinux 362

#26 Post by ninrode »

PuppyMartin Hi!
The version was great! I'm just missing the Puppy package repository!
Although the version is very light and running smoothly, a User would be adding some extra packages beyond the Browserlinux available to the site. It's just a suggestion of an admirer and User's puppy derivatives.
Congratulations and good work!

Remaster with some games?

#27 Post by Yogi »

Puppymartin,

This is the perfect flavor for my 78 year old mother who really
wants to learn to surf the internet but doesn't want to
complicate her life any more than that. She had to return a nice
laptop a few years ago because Microsoft Windows and Anti-Virus and every other option was just too much. Even a regular Puppy version would probably be too much. I could maybe remaster a regular version (or the menu itself) and that would suffice. But before I do I would like to know if I could just add a few games and remaster. I looked for the remaster gui
but didn't find it. Where would I find it?

Thanks

You can use this script:

Hi :D

Many thanks for your work puppymartin ! It proved to be very
helpful. We had a few issues so I would like to ask you for a few
things if you can:

1. In the same way you provide an additional package for Mplayer,
is it possible you provide a VLC package, that would be an alternative
to Mplayer for the people whom have issues with Mplayer. VLC also
have a mozilla-vlc-plugin to watch embedded video.

2. can you provide a skype package too ?

3. from the writings in the above posts, it would be quite useful if you
set a remaster script ready to use ;-)

Best regards
Laurent

I posted this in your earlier thread before i realised you had started a new one.
Hi and thanks for this release, i have installed it as a full install on a Toshiba laptop and it connected at boot via the inbuilt wireless first time, only old kernels would find the wireless module in this computer until now.
One irritation i have found is the wpa_cli -i status carries on scanning, i am not sure if this is because my network is an open one and does not need wpa or it is a bug.

thanks for BrowserLinux

I see that LNXpup seems to make use of most and only adding Skype and something more. changing desktop look maybe.

Seem unfair he doesn't mention he made reuse of your efforts? Is he somebody you know. Has he been active in or on your forum for BL?

Edit I tested it also on an older Compaq presario 8000 with only 500mb memory. Has the same cpu demands of the standard puppy. x is 28 to 31 % and Firefox some 50%

but maybe this one is less headroom for memory.

free in terminal show 506mem and 455 used and only 5 mb free when I play folk music on radio nrk.no so it doesn't seem to help much that the browser linux is smaller?

I have no idea. I am not good at structured thinking.

Anyway good that you made it.

I use Google Search on Puppy Forum
not an ideal solution though

Great distro love the nice clean look.

update: Been using browserlinux 362 pre (namoroko) today the namoroko web browser sort of stutters and lags out when scrolling on certain web pages (browser linux home page being one example) ive turned on smooth scrolling in settings. i also installed CPU frequency scaling 1.3 -2 maybe this is the problem, any ideas?

nosmp

#34 Post by xia_yexin »

I removed the nosmp option from my extlinux.conf and for some reason I could no longer connect to my wireless network.
Does anyone have any ideas on that one?

1 The VLC-plugin and Firefox doesn't work well. I think Mplayer is better or you can download the Silverlight (Moonlight) Plugin:
http://www.go-mono.com/moonlight/
(I need it to view Dutch TV)

2 Skype. I can install it:

3 Shinobars Remaster2: /usr/sbin/remasterpup2

BTW:
New version, now waiting for the Firefox 3.6.2 final (30 March):
Browserlinux 362 build2
- Nomaroka pre replaced with Firefox pre
- New 'Shinobar' setup scripts after first boot (Boot and it Works!)
