NOP 431

It's finally here - NOP 431 available at http://puppylinux.asia/tpp/NOP

Nearly Office Pup is a puplet with office apps removed and using the XFCE desktop. The idea is that the puplet is run from frugal install or USB stick and an appropriate SFS file of your favourite office apps is used. Usually this would be OpenOffice, but could be Goffice (Abiword & Gnumeric) or even Koffice.

For Goffice (Abiword & Gnumeric) try the goffice-43.sfs file at the above site.

NOP 431 is based on Puppy 4.3.1 but with the Xfce / Thunar desktop replacing JWM / Rox, and of course Abiword & Gnumeric, Homebank, notecase removed. Opera 10 replaces Seamonkey as the web browser.

Pwidgets 2.5 is included but not active by default.

Magnificent! Thanks, gray, good to know that you're still in business and offering choices (eg Xfce, Thunar, Opera) that most prefer! And your derivatives are the only ones that shut down properly on all my kit.

Update: Abiword d/l successful but won't run - error loading shared libwv-1.2.so.4 etc No such...

NOP is my favorite on eee pc
the only thing i do not like is ugly qt3 look without polymer theme ( it's the first thing i do:)

@gray : will there be BOXpup 4.3 also?
maybe even lighter with pcmanfm( i use pcmanfm-nohal from deb) and lxpanel 5.3 ( mostly work fine on 4.3)

Good morning, gray,
Nice surprise to see this so soon.
Looks very good with pfix=ram.
How does one (can one) upgrade from Nop413r1?

Thanks, Henry

gray,

Running frugal, all drive and partition icons appear correctly on the desktop when there is no pupsave file (or pfix=ram). But whenever there is a pupsave file then the appearance of drive icons is inconsistent. Even the home drive icon does not appear. With varying results, I can get the remaining icons to appear by manually toggling them with Pmount and/or running the included Partview. No such problems with 431 final (JWM/Rox), and even your Boxpup 413 (Openbox/Thunar) finds the drives every time. So it must be something peculiar in the Xfce handling. (I am going to write a script to restart X with a single click.)

It would be nice if the flash and grafix blocker buttons were already in Opera.

I gotta have Ayttm for Google jabber. I would vote to have Ayttm included and then leave PSIP or SKYPE as an add-on pet.

I seem to be leaning toward your Boxpup (with both Firepup and Opera10) as my workhorse because of my experience to date.

No question about it. Puppy with your Thunar file manager configuration is the one I would introduce to "immigrants".

NOP issues

Sage,
Are you sure you downloaded the correct goffice sfs ?

goffice-43.sfs works fine for me.

JMX,
I hoped this would not be needed (and indeed NOP is OK on any machine I tested) but on slow machines I think Xfce sometimes needs a poke. Try adding the following lines to the .xinitrc file just before the #v2.11 GuestToo line near the bottom.

# sometimes need to 'poke' xfwm to display icons
( sleep 12 && touch -c /root/Desktop/*.desktop ) &

Thanks for your response, gray.
Answer: "no" ! I'm not doing much with PCs at present due to other major projects. And was never a SW person which is why I appreciate your polished offerings so highly.

How to restart x-server in NOP?

Nice work, Gray. Just one question .... how can I restart x-server? You don't have an option in the menus. I like a resolution of 1024x768 but at this resolution it always boots with the display moved to the right. The workaround for me in Barry's 4.31 is to restart x-server immediately after boot and this moves the display to where it ought to be....... hence my question.

That solved it!

Now all of my drive icons appear on the destop (Pentium III 800Mhz).

Woo Hoo! I can't wait to get off work, go home and download the new NOP!

Hopefully my broadcom wireless will work right off the bat, just as it did in NOP413!

I would really like to give NOP 4.3.1 a try. The posts above indicate that some people have been able to download it successfully, but currently, that site requires login. Is there any other place where the iso is available?

blubb_fallo,

The username/password is puppy/linux. That's pretty much the default on any mirror that requires login for puppy stuff.

Enjoy,

I got home and downloaded the new NOP431 with hopes that it would have the WL module for my broadcom wireless on my laptop. It was installed or worked out of the box in NOP 413.

Where can I locate and download the WL module that I need, that worked so great in NOP413?

Thanks!

PupDial

gray,

There appears to be 5 missing Wvdial library files (the libwv... files). I put them into user/lib and now Pupdial works great with my USB-tethered cellphone.

The find and replace function in Mousepad is inconsistent because it sometimes appends rather than replaces. I am going to run a few more tests to figure out why...

I have some problem with booting with NOP431. After full installing I've got a massage by booting:
Kernel panic -not syncing: Unable to mount root fs unknown-block(0,0)

And this is what my menu.lst is saying:

# GRUB configuration file '/boot/grub/menu.lst'.
# generated by 'grubconfig'. Wed Oct 28 03:41:52 2009
#
# The backup copy of the MBR for drive '/dev/sda' is
# here '/boot/grub/mbr.sda.11006'. You can restore it like this.
# dd if=/boot/grub/mbr.sda.11006 of=/dev/sda bs=512 count=1
#
# Start GRUB global section
#timeout 30
color light-gray/blue black/light-gray
# End GRUB global section
# Linux bootable partition config begins
title Linux (on /dev/sda1)
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/sda1 ro vga=normal
# Linux bootable partition config ends
title Install GRUB to floppy disk (on /dev/fd0)
pause Insert a formatted floppy disk and press enter.
root (hd0,0)
setup (fd0)
pause Press enter to continue.
title Install GRUB to Linux partition (on /dev/sda1)
root (hd0,0)
setup (hd0,0)
pause Press enter to continue.
title - For help press 'c', then type: 'help'
root (hd0)
title - For usage examples, type: 'cat /boot/grub/usage.txt'
root (hd0)

When I start NOP from CD everything works fine. My laptop is a little bit old (IBM thinkpad t20 700mhz, 256 mb ram). But with live CD everything was detected and works fine
