NOP 431
Hi Henry
This is just an idea - not a certainty - but white-outs could be what's causing the loss of space in your save_file.
White-outs :-
Some time ago Big Bass made a white-out cleaner for his
412 Slaxer Pup. It should work ok with 413/431 etc.
I'll see if I can find a copy - or a link - and post it.
HTH - very best regards - Ray

I searched for .wh and found 95 files, probably the result of previous tweaking.Henry wrote:Thanks, Ray,Some time ago Big Bass made a white-out cleaner for his 412 Slaxer Pup. It should work ok with 413/431 etc.

Interesting. Let me know if you find it,
Henry
I manually deleted them all, and it seems to have fixed the problem. This is amazing!
THANKS!
Henry
Thanks, Dave, for that observation. It doesn't apply in my case as described above, however.DaveS wrote:Henry, try adding the 'pfix=fsck' command to your boot parameter. This seems to stop/fix .wh files. If you are using Grub, the entry would look like this:
/431/vmlinuz pfix=fsck pmedia=atahd psubdir=431
1. I use a live CD only, not a full installation, no grub.
2. My main objective here is to avoid rebooting as a way to restore lost free space.
3. pfix=fsck restores the lost free space but does not delete the .wh files, which are the problem.
Other than that - great
Henry
Of course you might not have any, but it's easy to check. I just use pfind to search for .whnooby wrote:Hope it is ok to ask, how does one know one have these .wh files in pupsave? what do I use to look for them and to delete them?
This will tell you where they are. Go there with your file manager and delete them.

Hi Henry
Finally - found them - hope they work.

They do seem to. Many thanks! I first went back and read the relevant threads, and your concerns seemed similar to mine.Ray MK wrote:Hi Henry

cleanup_whiteouts_daemon.pet appears in the package manger and presumably can be uninstalled if desired.
cleanup_memory I unarchived and placed in /mnt/home/ where it can be run when desired.
EDIT: On second thought I placed it in /root/Startup/.
I had not been even thinking about memory utilization, but the effect is very interesting. See the screen shot. (You'll have to mentally line up the columns.)

NOP is one of the best puppies.
To mount a usb drive in frugal install failed on puppy stardust for me.
Not sure what error I made.
but it works on NOP 431 so maybe that one will be my main puppie then.

I use Google Search on Puppy Forum

EXACTLY what I have wanted in a Puplet !!!
Gray - Fantastic job, I love this version, and it will be my main distro for 2010.
A couple of issues I have that are not biggies, but I would like to get ironed out:
1) ccsm will not open. I have managed to work around this by editing the compiz .ini file; copy/pasting a few sections from the compiz .ini file from my Ubuntu partition, and moving a few plug-in xml files into the Puppy partition. This allowed me to get rid of the oh-so-annoying airplane animation, and replace it with the vacuum, also enable dodge, and the sphere deformation. It just would be a lot easier if ccsm ran.
2) pwidgets is not working. Is there a workaround?
3) This may not be applicable, but I cannot change the icon spacing on the desktop. In the past, with xfce, this could be achieved by editing the xfwm4rc file. When I looked, there wasn't one, so I created it with icon grid/spacing parameters, but it did not work, even on reboot. Let me know if I am missing something.
4) Lastly, and this is more of a question, how should an icon set be installed? I'm assuming I need to copy a set over, as installing a .pet would only be for jwm/ice. Please correct me if I am wrong.
Thanks again for a great puplet!

Actually, I am not sure that cleanup_whiteouts_daemon.pet works in my system - it appears not to. Hard to tell at first since I had already deleted them. And whiteouts from trying to delete something that is in the .iso may be another matter.Henry wrote:They do seem to. Many thanks! Hi Gray,
Congratulations for your splendid puplet !
I have always loved XFCE but I have to admit it is really a great
combination when setup with puppy !!
I have been working with it on my own pc and I would like to ask
you some questions I didn't know how to answer myself:
1. in the directory listing I could find amsn.pet but I can't find any
pet or SFS for Skype latest version ; do you know where there is one
or could you build one please ?
2. though I love Opera and use it, in my country we have websites
providing online television that works only with firefox and vlc and
mozilla-vlc-plugin. I have tried for many months to find some other ways but
it seems we have to use this softwares ; it is not just for some web-tv,
these are the real country tv-channels like on cable or satellite network.
So, is there already a SFS ready to use with NOP for Firefox+vlc-plugin
and another SFS for VLC ?
3. maybe you remember I worked a lot too to produce a puplet based
on XFCE some years ago (named eXpand) and I would like to know
if you have a barebone version for NOP with only the minimal puppy
software plus XFCE ? ...maybe it would help a lot for future creations
4. how did you make it ? did you start from another barebone or from
woof ? and if so how did you do it ?
5. for easy inclusion into NOP, could you build some more SFS for the
following software: GnuPaint, gThumb, XFE, Rhythmbox please ?
Many thanks in advance for taking the time to answer me
You made a great work and I hope I will have chance to learn more
tips so to build myself such good tools.
Best regards
Laurent

Tried running 4.31 NOP on a Dell Mini 9 - a gift from my sister - regular LAN is recognized but not the internal Broadcom Wifi - tried the version of regular 4.31 with Tempestuous's fix built in and it works - any plans to incorporate the fix into NOP? Thanks and keep up the good work!

trouble with pdvdrsab in nop431?
Well, I tried to rip shrink author all in one step using pdvdrsab in nop 431.
This resulted in a file too big for dvd. So I ripped and used vamps from command line and this worked fine. Then I tried pdvdrsab to author and again this worked fine. So I tried to burn the resulting directory with pdvdrsab and nothing happens. the window just disappears. Is there a log somewhere?
So is anyone else having trouble with pdvdrsab in NOP 431?
