tazoc,

I am now using lighthouse pup Gu3 as my mail OS as a full install on a 200G partition. What is a bit odd is the free indicator is only displaying 19G instead of 200G. I'm pretty sure this was not a problem with the frugal install.

Another issue is Seamonkey browser as it won't let you enter text into the "what's on your mind space" on Facebook. I managed to get it working by adding the line in about:config:

general.useragent.extra.fake user set string notFirefox/2.0.0.18

The third oddity is the network status icon often disappears, you know the two little blinking monitors next to sound volume icon.

I am also having problems getting CUPS to work with my printer too. I have installed the HP package with all the extra drivers which work on puppy 4.3.1 & 4.3.2. I will keep on trying but lack of printing is a show stopper.

All in all it's a solid distribution that works very well.

Thanks

Any ideas?
Mount as usual, except when TC prompts for a password, hit the 'Options' button at the lower RH corner, then at the bottom you'll see Mount Options--in there put '-t ntfs'.

@smokey01,
Hi and thank you for the feedback. I'll see if I can include the fix you gave for SM 2 useragent.

Can you clarify exactly what key to add (.extra.fake user?) and what about this add-on instead? https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/seamonkey/addon/59

Not sure about freespace in a full install. I think it only works on frugal as it measures the pupsave.

I haven't seen Blinky disappear before, which WM is that in? The tray icons in KDE4 sometimes 'hide' or switch icons, I don't know why.

I'm testing CUPS-1.3.11 for the next release; it is much improved. Although I don't have an HP printer to test with, mine is a Canon and it detects now w/o any intervention where as before it didn't.

Webcam

#633 Post by Barburo »

Hi TazOC,
This could be operator error again but I'm trying to activate the webcam on my notebook in LHPup.
I've been through the menus but I can't find any entry for a web camera.
Gtkam doesn't detect it - hardware info shows that the cam is detected (see pic).
Is it something to do with scanning? I searched this thread but only found possible link from member edoc about mplayer - nothing doing there. Any advice?
B.

Hi Barburo,
I tried the getting my cheap old USB Logitech web-cam to work with mplayer and v4l in Xorg 7.3 but no luck so far. I am including v4l with Xorg 7.5 and an updated mplayer in the next release and so far it detects my cam but no video, just a solid green window and some error messages. Not sure if it's my cam, the drivers or what. Didn't work in a new VLC I tried either. From what I've read the apps for web-cams in Puppy are mplayer, Xawtv, Skype and possibly VLC. If I get it working I'll let you know...

Just made a fresh burn of Gu2 and downloaded the Gu3 PET.

Any install hints before I wipe my son's laptop and make a nice clean new install of LHP?

Thanks!

I went ahead and did a Frugal install of Gu2, all looks good.

HOWEVER ...

Seamonkey crashes on YouTube - freezing the video but looping the audio several times before recovering.

QUESTION 1: Are there any manual tweaks to Gu2 that I should do or are they all in the Gu3 PET?

QUESTION 2: Am I likely to lose any functionality if I run the Gu3 PET or is it all-good though it may not fix every problem in Gu2 that some are experiencing?

NOTE: It remains *very* confusing to be asked (without real context) if one wants to reboot to create a savefile when first booting in "puppy pfix=ram" and it is again obscure what one wants to do when asked about where to put the savefile when done installing and rebooting (inside the .sfs or to a partition).

It is just too obscure for a newbie.

Perhaps there needs to be a short menu at the very beginning asking:

Choose experience-level with Puppy Linux __

1. Newbie
2. Some Experience
3. Guru or Master

If the first is selected then present no options - just force defailts.

If the second is selected direct to a more verbose set of prompts along the way.

If the third is selected then only the most terse prompts.

WDYT?

Updated to Gu3 and the problem is no better, perhaps worse.

Our son reports frequent crashes in YouTube.

If he is viewing a streaming video and tries to do anything else it freezes and crashes. He has to stop the streaming if he wants to make any changes.

I am guessing it is a resource management problem but am not sure.

This is a fresh Frugal install and the only change to the stock THP is adding Gu3 in hopes of solving the YouTube instability.

WDYT?

He's asking me to roll him back to 4.31 generic ...

Hi edoc,
You might try d/l the latest Flash plugin at getadobe.com/flashplayer, close your browser, extract and place the libflashplugin.so in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins.

I agree that prompting to save to a file or partition might be confusing. I always save to a file (option 1). I'm removing the prompt to save your session prior to starting X for the next release. The reason for that was that sometimes running X interferes with the dialogs at first shutdown, and no one I know of has figured out why. But that bug seems more infrequent now so we'll see how it goes...

Hope that helps,
TazOC

Thanks! I will try that on his laptop.

Oddly enough I tried LHP GU2 on my laptop, an older Panasonic Toughbook CF-29, and it worked well without crashing.

In addition to YouTube I even tried the challenging http://myfoxhurricane.com page and http://www.webcamplaza.net/ -- both of which have tripped-up prior Puppies.

Stock LHP GU2 booted from CD handled them OK, though a few of the cam sites I tested did not work, I had no crashing.

Perhaps it is a memory management or resource problem on his older HP laptop? It is a HP Omnibook xe4400s

TazOC,
talked with the sakura developer about the problem with bash... here is the convo:
Sorry for emailing you direct, but I couldnt find any bugtracker for Sakura, so this seemed like my only route.
Have you done any testing with Sakura with the lastest Bash version? I used to use Bash 3.0, however when I upgraded to Bash 4.1 Some of the keys dont seem to work as they once did (Home, end, etc)
Didnt know if this was a known issue, or if its due to something on my end.
If you've gotten it to work with 4.1 before, then I know the problem is on my system and i'll keep digging.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

HIS REPLY:
It's ok! Sakura uses launchapad for bugtracking:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/sakura
I tested it with 4.0, but not yet with 4.1
I just tried it now with the bash version i have installed (4.1.5). No apparent problem, it works ok. Home and End keys are working.
Did you compiled bash 4.1 yourself or are using a customized configuration?

MY REPLY:
yes I compiled bash myself. I'm only using bash 4.1.0. I'll havent figure out how to patch with 005. I'll do some studying and then try that latest patch. For me... the end and home keys just print a ~ on the screen and dont move the cursor at all.

HIS REPLY:
It seem just a configuration problem. Probably you do need to add
proper keybindings in the bash configuration file to map home and end
keys to "end-of-line" and "start-of-line" actions (i don't know the
actual names, but i guess it'll be something similar)
I havent had the time since this email to go back and try to recompile bash 4.1 again as well as the newer sakura and see if there are any config settings I didnt set. Anyway wanted to pass this along to you, in case it might give you an idea of some other possible solution.

I don't know, the Flash plugin has a history of problems crashing Firefox, and SM 2 is architecturally more similar to FF than SM 1.x was. I read on Barry's Blog today that an upcoming version of FF has a new approach to the problem.

@Q5sys,
Thanks for passing along your work with the Sakura developer. I don't know how to map the key-bindings for Sakura in /etc/.bashrc but I will take a look at Slackware's .bashrc as I think Sakura works fine there with Bash 4.1.

Feel free to build your pets for the next release--I'm working hard on it, so hard I think I need a short break! The new KDE 4.4.3 is much larger with new features and dependencies so it won't fit on a Mariner CD. I may include an Xfce SFS in the Mariner ISO instead of KDE, but still offer a separate KDE add-on.

TazOC,
I forgot to thank you for the log-out script on wbar for KDE3.
Now changing the window manager, or exiting is much faster.
I've found that the puppy implementation of KDE3 has been pretty solid as a window manager. I like KDE3 over KDE4 (it's faster and seems to use less resources) and I'm glad you're continuing support in your next version.
I've also found LXDE to be efficient and it supports C-F too, but doesn't have the menu flexibility that KDE has.

Don't work too hard on that next release - we all need some downtime!

Firefox 3.6.4-beta
I downloaded a binary tarball of Firefox "Lorentz", which is expected to become the next version of Firefox, 3.6.4. The most interesting feature is protection from a crashed plugin -- so, if Adobe Flash Player goes down, the browser won't.

I have also made it into a PET package. I have designed the PET with the intention that it could be used to replace SeaMonkey when doing a build with Woof.

There are lots of nice addons for Firefox, and we can get most of the functionality of the SeaMonkey suite, except for the big one -- a WYSIWYG HTML/web page editor.

Note, I also had to upgrade Sqlite to version 3.6.23.1, Firefox needs this.

I'll upload these PETs soon.

Anyone know to what E-mail app Firefox will be closely tied?

Is it a seamless one where clicking on an E-mail in FF results in the E-mail app opening and clicking on a URL in an E-mail opens a FF window?

We are used to Seamonkey but can adapt to Firefox if that is a superior browser.

I don't really care about the HTML editors as I do not use them - I find hand-coding HTML for basic pages a lot cleaner than auto-bot code.

What about a spreadsheet or word processor?

Can OxygenOffice (OpenOffice on steroids) be made the default in Firefox so that the relationship is seamless?

I'm confused ... here he is touting SM again ... sigh.
sqlite-manager 0.5.15
Ah, one very good thing about the move to SeaMonkey 2.x is that many recent addons for Firefox 3.6 will also work with SM. Including the latest sqlite-manager Sqlite database manager tool.

I have created a PET package for Quirky, just 125KB. That's good, fills a big gap in Quirky's range of "business" applications. This will be in the next release of Quirky.

Note that the full SM browser does not have to be running. Sqlite-manager can start in a window so it looks just like any normal application. I have placed an entry in the Business category of the menu.

edoc,

I think what you might be seeing is the actual flow of ideas, without sensor. FireFox does allow you to do much more, and I'm pretty sure it integrates with Thunderbird seamlessly, however Firefox is alot larger sizewise and memory usage wise. This may be why there was shift back to SeaMonkey after the realization that plugins for FF would work in SM.

I cant be entirely sure what he's thinking... but that'd be my guess.

TazOC,
As for my Pets... Im getting them ready, but I think it'd be wise of me to wait until you release your next version so I can figure out what would be needed and what you've already upgraded. NO RUSH THOUGH!!! I've got plenty of other things to work on right now. lol So the wait for the next version will give me some time to catch up. :)
Excited to hear what will be included though. :)

Hi Barburo,
You're welcome, I use the Logout button on Wbar often, and I took some time off yesterday. I used to favor KDE3 but I would like to phase it out in favor of Xfce 4, which I've been tweaking for the next release of Mariner ISO. I think it is faster than KDE3, has nearly every setting you can think of, including C-F-like compositing with shadows and translucency built in (Menu | Setup | Xfce Settings | Window Manager Tweaks | Compositor). Today I updated the Xfce4 Settings Manager and the Weather Update Panel Plugin from Lucid packages, (see attached screen shot.) With the KDE 4 add-on you'll still be able to run KDE apps from other desktops.

I also updated Lighthouse to Xorg-xserver 1.7.7 and Mesa 7.8.1 with OpenGL 2.1 support and DRI (direct rendering interface) hardware acceleration from Slackware 13.1 Beta 1 repos. Xserver 1.7.7 was released on May 4th and it's looking very good here. So far the 3D performance with my setup is right on par with the ATI proprietary drivers in prior releases and hopefully will work as well with nVidia, Intel and other display cards.
Take care,
TazOC

Im going to throw out a crazy wild question out here... any chance it'll work better with multi monitors than the previous versions? And I dont mean cloning but extending the desktop onto both screens?

Where does the Weather app pull its data from?

Have you integrated an app that handles a personal weather station?

There are a couple of free apps out there for Linux that have nice displays of your measurements and even a weather cam -- and at least one will interface with a huge network of weather stations.

Taking a tour of lhp443

#649 Post by gulk »

dpup looked very promising, but hey, I got some new hardware recently and decided it was time to try a fat puppy on my machine...

My requirements were:
- can recognize my hardware
- can do multimedia
- has some sort of video editor
- can support compiz, preferably on xfce 4

Well... Tazoc basically answered all of that, and more :D Is it humanly possible to handle all those different configurations and still have some rock solid OS? Congratulations, you made it! :o .

Now, because of my requirements, I needed to put pretty much all of the sfs I could find on lhpup.org download page which created somewhat of a bloat (admittedly restricted to ~ 1GB, which is not bad actually!).

I have few questions to help me further personalize my installation (frugal):
- I have the choice between so many desktop managers. Is there any way to remove some of them without affecting stability? For example, I need Kdenlive software, does it mean I am stuck with kde3 or 4 or both?
- I have two users: root and spot, each with its startup folder. Is spot startup folder looked into when booting? (I suppose I am root by default?). There are many apps in each startup folder and I am not sure what they do... yet.

Anyway, everything looks very solid so far, all my hardware was properly configured out of the box, and very minimum setup was required to get going. Thank you so much for such hard work and dedication.

PS: maybe someone who's trying to figure what hardware to buy to run a linux distribution without headache, here is my setup:
CPU: phenom II X3 720, unlocked fourth core through BIOS
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-MA790X-UD4P, integrated audio (realtek 889a), integrated network
Graphic card: nvidia Geforce 7900GS
Memory: 2GB G-Skill DDR2 (6400)
Wireless: TrendNet TEW-623PI (Version v3.0R)

Just installed LHP 4.43 Gu2 Frugal on a laptop.

Looks good, except ...

1. Like other Puppy versions it only offers 1400 x 1050 as a resolution so I have to manually edit the config file down to 1280 x 1048 (this is only on one specific laptop).

2. Even at 1280 x 1048 I have to change the default font to 96

3. The wifi has to try 4x to make a connection, this has happened with other Puppy versions, but once made and saved it is fine.

4. It renders http://myfoxhurricane.com *almost* correctly, but not quite, and the Gu3 update caused the Chatango window to no longer display the text.

5. http://honolulu.gov/multimed/waikiki.aps does not display correctly - gxine error. (There is no error in 4.31 and SM 1.18, but it also doesn't show the cam.)

6. When I have a couple of sites open in http://www.webcamplaza.net/ and try to back out it no longer crashes - as it has in some Puppy versions.

7. I still wish SM would offer a window to search the HDD (multiple partitions) for other installs and ask if one wants to import Address Book, Bookmarks, E-mail folders, and other settings from a list. [Note: I have them stored outside the personal storage file.)
