Broadcom B43 works with Lucid Puppy

#46 Post by EditionLocus »

Dell Latitude 131L notebook
Broadcom B43 wireless
Lucid Puppy

The setup screen says it's a "PCMCIA" device, but it is entirely inside the computer. This is a wireless adapter that did not work with previous versions of Puppy Linux. I booted Lucid from a flash drive, and the network wizard configured my wireless by itself on the first try.

I am quite pleased, as this was the barrier to me adopting Puppy.

Welcome to Puppy!

If you disassemble a Wifi PCMCIA card you will discover that it is mostly just a shell with a card inside of it. That is what you have inside of your computer.

WPC600N (Broadcom BCM43XX) does not work anymore in lupu 5

#48 Post by pzkfwg »

See http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=58678

The module B43 loads, but the interface is not found. I'm trying to compile a wl.ko driver as per http://www.broadcom.com/support/802.11/linux_sta.php

Thank you.

SMC EZ Connect G USB 2.0(Works with 1.1 too) P/N: 98-012084-701EU
Model: SMCWUSB-G

It works out of the box(no driver needed), with: WEP,WPA,WPA2(TKIP-AES)

Works with version 4.1.2 and up through 5.x.x

Just set it up through the Connect button on the desktop. Also it might be a good idea for those who use 3G LAN ZTE MF600 modem(not USB) and AP or Router to give this(SMC) an Static IP.

Netgear WPN111

#52 Post by Maltese »

Device: Netgear WPN111
Puppy version: 5.2
Interface: USB
Chipset: Atheros 2414
Device Driver:
WiFi protocols: 802.11g tested, I assume b and a are valid and working as well
Security: WEP tested (128-bit key)

Being a newbie, a got a Netgear WPN111 usb card working with Lucid Puppy 5.2 after some modifications.

Firstly I tried to use the Puppy network wizard. Even after loading ndiswrapper and using the proper card .inf file, there was no new interface reported.
Then I followed the following advice found in the net:

Code: Select all

ndiswrapper -i netwpn11.inf
ndiswrapper -m
modprobe ndiswrapper
After the last command, I got the following:
WARNING: Deprecated config file /etc/modprobe.conf, all config files belong into /etc/modprobe.d/.
Then I copied the following line from /etc/modprobe.d/ndiswrapper.conf to /etc/ndiswrapper.conf:

Code: Select all

alias wlan0 ndiswrapper
and after that I got Netgear WPN111, using the Atheros 2414 chip, to be seen by Puppy as a valid new interface.

I was able to utilize ndiswrapper to install the windows driver. After some trial and error Puppys connection wizard was able to get me online! I had been working on this for a year! I was finally able to revive an old Thinkpad 570 with NO optical or floppy drives! It's slow but it works. Now I just need to find a lightweight browser to speed things up a bit. Puppy rocks!!

D-link DWL-G650 a no go?

#54 Post by axel_2078 »

I still haven't found a way to get my D-link DWL-G650 PCMCIA card working with Puppy Linux 5.2. I didn't see it in the list of confirmed cards, so I might be out of luck. Pity though since it works fine under Ubuntu and Fedora.

Marvell 88W8335

#55 Post by Frank78 »

Hey everyone - I'm new to this forum :)

I have been welcomed to the world of Puppy Linux as of 1 week ago. My Windows XP system won't boot up and I am using Puppy Linux CD to boot my computer and transfer my files to an external hard drive before I try something like a fixmbr command...probably will end up doing a clean install and then also installing Puppy Linux too :)

I can't get my wireless card to detect via the network wizard and am using Lucid Puppy 5.2. I have an ASUS P5LD2 deluxe motherboard (few years old now) with an inbuilt Wireless card.

As detailed in the Puppy hardware info, my wireless chip is a:
Marvell 88W8335 [Libertas] 802.11b/g Wireless (rev 43)

I have tried loading various modules, including one for Marvell and they load up but then I get a message saying nothing new was detected. I have also tried using ndiswrapper to load up the windows driver.

This is the tricky part - I can't get into Windows to see what the actual driver name is so I've tried loading a couple of .inf files that I thought were correct, but this doesn't detect any cards either. I've tried the driver CD also but that didn't do anything either. My ethernet adapter works fine.

Any ideas? I can post further hardware info here if required.
thank you in advance :)

Drivers are dependent on card versions, as chipsets are often changed/updated

I think that card usually uses the madwifi or PrismGT driver

Try PMing tempestuous, and see if he can help, as he's the driver king

The DWL-G650 is quite an old card, and has been reported to work fine with Puppy versions in the past.
I suspect your problem possibly relates to PCMCIA interface failure, which has been reported before with the Puppy 5.x series. See here for a fix -

The MADWiFi driver (ath_pci) is deprecated in modern kernels, in fact the Puppy 5.x series doesn't even include it.
It's been replaced by the ath5k driver.

Well generally the Marvell 88Wxx wifi devices have never had native Linux support, so your only option would be to use ndiswrapper with the Windows driver ... but ...

Google tells me that the "deluxe" version of this motherboard has a combined Wifi/TV-tuner card, that's interesting!
To positively identify your wifi device, I need its PCI device ID. Please run this command -

Code: Select all

lspci -n
and report the output. You can paste text from the console by highlighting it with the mouse, then paste this text by simultaneously pressing the left and right mouse buttons.

Wireless driver

#60 Post by Frank78 »

Yeah it's got a tv tuner on here too ;)
Well I'm on the iPhone now but I booted up puppy to run that command. Can't paste it to you as my Internet isn't hooked up without me running a cable halfway across the house. I think the output you're after is this line:
01:0f.0 0200: 11ab:2a01 (rev 43)

If you need the full dump I can connect my cable and copy n paste it. Thank you!

This may be useful to identify many wifi cards, but not sure drivers yet....

Yes, that's definitely a Marvell Libertas 88W8335 wifi chipset, for which there's currently no native Linux driver.

When trying ndiswrapper, it's essential that the "inf" file you load is located in the same directory as the other supporting Windows driver files (eg. "sys" and "cat" files). This is because the inf file references those other files.

It appears that Linux support for the Marvell 8835 chipset is planned for the future, probably to be incorporated into the mwl8k driver. I see on the linuxwireless mailing list that the all-important firmware has been authorised to be redistributed by Marvell.

Not as far as I'm concerned.
That utility is obviously doing what I already ask of users; determine the the device ID. This ultimately determines driver compatibility.
Knowing the name of the wifi chipset is secondary, and less useful.

Ok great. Thanks for your help. Basically I will be reinstalling Windows XP and will also be installing Puppy. Once I work out where my driver is I'm Windows, I will try ndiswrapper again.

I just need to download service pack 3 before I do the Windows reinstall. But I am impressed with Puppy so far and hope to use it for some music production and basic photo/video editing.

Security wise, if I browse the web via Puppy, how easy is it for viruses to infect my files? I was considering doing a frugal install on my data partition (i.e. Windows and program files on c drive but data and puppy on d).

I've read instructions on creating separate partitions for Puppy and for a swap file etc but not sure what the benefits are.

About year ago I lost XP drivers for wlg-pcm/II wireless pc card. Don't ask how, but they were gone for ever. I had and I still have original drivers on cd, but I was needing updated drivers to use WPA connection. And manufacturers download link was broken for ever, I thought.

I studied my card specs: age, latest date for drivers, appearance, properties, etc. Then I googled and googled, and finally found same card with different name and tapes : TEW-421PC (Version B1.1R). Then I downloaded driver package and unzipped XP drivers: Marvell 88w8335 [Libertas], and put them to some folder.

Now I have a reliable WPA connection in XP, Quirky and Wary (ndiswrapper, classic wizard), but not in Lupu-520,525 (SNS connects more often than classic, but OS freezes all the time).

Any comments?
