PostPosted: Wed 30 Sep 2009, 09:15    Post subject:  Simple Database Program Available?

I'm looking for a basic database program that would allow me to import and view csv files that only have two fields: Subject and Note. So it's text only.

The OpenOffice database program is overkill. I'd like something speedier and leaner.

Is there something out there that I've missed in my searching?

Thanks,
Jake

To watch csv, you will need a spreadsheet.
The one in Puppy in Gnumeric.

Sorry if I missunderstood you Smile

Thanks for the quick responses, folks. I've played with sqlite and its layout is not great for a large amount of text display. Ditto for any kind of spreadsheet program. I don't know if anybody remembers the Psion Data app, but something like that would be splendid:

This is what I use on my Nokia E90. Not as good, but simple and functional:

not certain if csv is already included,, I think it was discussed in the end of that thread.

Thanks, MU, for that tip. I downloaded and installed it. The program looks good, except no csv import as of yet.

So I can't tell whether it'll render a two-field, text-heavy csv file.

I'd suggest to post a request in that thread.
Gposil is very active for Puppy, and if you are lucky, he soon will release an updated version that can do what you need Smile

Before Barry had critical things to say about Gposil's database project, it was constantly improved and updated. Once Barry pronounced he would not include it in Puppy, it seemed to die a miserable death.

I hope you can convince Gposil to reactivate the project....it was one of the few I've seen that had real practical application and used data that was NOT OS dependent.

If you use Windows and are not afraid to admit it...you could find utilities to convert your datafile to a DBF for DbaseIII or IV or even Foxpro...all of which Gposil's application can use.

If you don't mind using windows apps in wine you can try this:

What a great forum; everybody has been so helpful. @ tlchost: thanks for the reminder. I used to run mdb viewer on windows 95 even. I had forgotten all about it.

Here's what I ended up doing, and hope it helps somebody. I went with portabase, a sharp zaurus database whose author ported it to Debian.

Download the portabase deb file from here:

http://portabase.sourceforge.net/download.html

Use a deb2pet pet from here:

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=39756

In puppy 4.3 final, upon installation of the portabase pet, I was missing this one library:

libqt-mt.so.3

This pet, qt-3.3.8.pet, has this dependency. Get it here:

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=27406

This will put you in business with a basic database program that can import heavy-duty text csv's. Lean gui, adjustable fonts, not as visually friendly as the legendary Psion Data app, but portabase does the job nicely.

Any other suggestions would be welcome, and thank you all again. You really helped,

Jake

Nicely done, Lobster. The wikka is clean and efficient.
