Ok, I was getting annoyed with not being about to hear notification sounds like when a contact signs in or sends a message, so I looked though the preferences to find a reason why it wasn't making sound and in the "Others" tab, there is a couple options for the sound server. In the command line bellow "Use a different program" insert "wavplay $sound" (without quotes). You'll probably have to restart for it to take effect, but it should work.

I'm just posting this stupid little 'how-to' because I couldn't find a way online and I'm a newb when it comes to linux operating systems, and I'm sure there are others who are the same.

Enjoy.
