Sub_title: How to set a desktop icon for GIMP

I have installed GIMP onto Puppy 4.3, but I cannot see it in the menu. I can however open GIMP via actions in Mtpaint.

In puppy 4.2, GIMP appeared in the graphics menu after refreshing the menus.

Is there a way of creating a shortcut to GIMP (or indeed a web page) on the desktop?

Many thanks,

Simon

G'day,

If you look in /usr/share/applications with ROX, can you find the gimp.desktop file (or icon)? (Check with 4.2.1 as well as 4.3.)

If it's there, drag the Gimp icon onto your desktop/pinboard and you should be right for that way of starting Gimp. Once it's on the pinboard/desktop, I usually edit the text under the icon removing the ".desktop" - in this case, to be just "Gimp".

If in /usr/share/applications you open the gimp.desktop file "as text", you could edit this file if you can work out why it is not appearing in your menus. Again compare 4.2.1 with 4.3 if that helps.

If you can't find the Gimp desktop file, can you see a Gimp file in the hidden /root/.packages directory? This gimp text file should list where every Gimp file was installed from the Pet. See if you can track down where things may have gone.

I have had the exact same issues with opening Gimp and here is the easy fix for that and any similar problem.

1. Create new directory in my-documents called "scripts"
2. Open "scripts" directory, and right-click inside its window
3. Choose "New" --> "Script"
4. Give it a name "gimp"
5. Click "Create" you now have a script called "gimp"
6. Right-click the "gimp" script --> "Open as text"
7. Leave the top line as it is, but add a new line underneath with this
exec gimp "$@"
8. Save it
9. Clicking on your "gimp" script should now open gimp!
10. Drag it out to the desktop, rename it if you want, and assign an icon to it.

Hope this helps

Thanks for your help. I found the GIMP desktop file in /usr/share/applications as suggested. The tutorial for the internet shortcuts was useful as well.

Cheers,

Simon
