ShepherdPup - Kiosk Edition

#1 Post by 1pritts2u »

Announcing: ShepherdPup Kiosk Edition

ShepherdPup is now available in a kiosk version for safe public access. Perfect for distribution as either a kiosk or given as a gift for (*see note)street evangelism.

This version runs entirely from CD without accessing the host computers drives. It limits the user to the basic study and media and browsing needs. It removes editing and file management and disk partitioning facilities. X11 Control-Alt-Funct[x] capability has been removed. It shuts down without saving and reboots pristine in ram.

Best of all, ShepherdPup Kiosk Edition comes with several language bibles installed making it suitable for missions work. It weighs in at 100megs!

Very nice work, pritts.

FYI, you've just become one of the editors at the Puppy Linux News site.
Puppy user since Oct 2004. Want FreeOffice? Get the sfs (English only).

Hi Pritts, your news item has gone onto the old news page:
http://puppylinux.org/home/news/
instead of the new one at:
http://puppylinux.org/news

I can't figure out how you did it - I go to the old "add news item" link and it tells me to go to the new one.

Raffy, Is the new page still being tested, or is it official now? I'm not sure whether I'm premature in worrying about new news going onto the old page...

cheers,
Steve

Hi Pritts,

Looks like you're still having trouble :( The link for the new personal edition - http://shepherdpuplinux.us/Downloads/Current/ - was a "page not found"

Unfortunately I've never uploaded a puplet so I'm not the guy to ask about what might have gone wrong. I'll put the puplet in the news when you've got the download working :)

Sorry I couldn't be more help

cheers,
Steve (terrier)

ShepherdPup - Kiosk Edition

08/17/09 - *Note:"Please consider this current kiosk edition to be merely at a proof of concept stage, security issues still exist that warrant caution in regards to mass distribution to strangers."
I forsee a few security issues left to be tackled before this kiosk edition can be recommended for its ultimate goal - mass general public tract like distribution. I am interested in any feedback as to:

1. Locking down or removing the xvesa server.
2. Eliminating root user or forcing to a sandbox.
3. Encrypted root file system or other ways of minimizing malicious forged copy circulation.
4. Other considerations.

I am hoping that this forum thread can help solve some of these remaining concerns, confident that in our weakness God's strength will come through.

I have posted an article on the homepage to this regard:
