Can't get 1360x768 working on 1366x768 HDTV

#1 Post by Nintendo Maniac 64 »

So here's the scoop, I installed Puppy 4.2.5 on an older PC with an Intel 845 on-board GPU and I've hooked it up to a cheepo Insignia NS-LCD32 1366x768 HDTV. Problem is that I can't get it to display any resolution higher than 1024x768 (has 1:1 pixel mapping though, so it's usable)

Also, it seem that my TV's resolution specifications cannot be detected, and I have to manually select 1024x768 (1360x768 doesn't work). Putting in the ddcprobe command returns a "edidfail" for my display as well. (also didn't list 1360x768 for my gpu, the highest was 1280x1024)

Even more annoying is that I know the TV can handle 1360x768 over VGA since I managed to use the DTD Calculator app on my sister's WinXP laptop with an Intel 945 GPU to get it to output 1360x768 - problem is that she's at college now, and I rolled back the drivers to a more stable version that doesn' t work with DTD calculator, so I cannot retrieve the working modelines and horizontal refresh info. (I also tried running XP and the DTD calculator on this pc, but it seems the 845 isn't compatible)

I've tried manually replacing the 1024x768 entries in the xorg.conf with 1360x768 but that didn't work either.

So, any ideas? Note that I'm somewhat of a linux newbie, so any suggestions will probably have to be given with step-by-step instructions. (I didn't post this in the "Beginner Help" section since I've already completely configured and set-up Puppy to how I want it and all that's left is the resolution issue - heck I'm even using it to type up this post)

OFFTOPIC: geez, isn't a 6KB limit for avatars a little overkill in terms of smallness? I can't even get the smaller version of my standard avatar (80x74 instead 100x74) to fit that! (it's ~7KB)

try running the xorg wizard, assuming you have the right driver for your videocard - xvesa won't do high res, but xorg goes up to at least 1360x768, though you may have to select 17" monitor for it to go

re avatar

mine's 78x74@2.66kb - what do you need so big a file for....convert to jpg or png, 6kb should be fine for 100x74

Um, of course I've run the xorgwizard - that runs automatically at first boot. Any place where I said I selected a resolution was in the xorgwizard. (yes I've also tried running it manually and selecting different choices).

And 6kb? It is a PNG, but it has a part that came from a resized-JPG as well, so that's not helping.
