Hi,
I'm new to puppy, everything seems fine but the video adapter.
I'm trying to install NVIDIA-96.43.13-k2.6.30.5-1.pet to puppy 4.3.1 on Compaq Tc1000 tablet with a Geforce2 Go adapter. Install ends "successful", but after restarting x I get a black screen and cannot go back. I have tried browserlinux 3.5.3 (4.1.2 kernel) with correct pet, same
result.
I can't go further to explore and use puppy, need your help...

I installed NVIDIA-71.86.11-k2.6.30.5-1.pet on an old pc (TNT2 M64 is the gpu) running puppy linux 4.31 frugall install. Everything worked ok with the install. I restarting x, x failed to start, restarted puppy again x failed to start. After running what auriza said in a previsous post:

Code: Select all

# depmod-FULL
# modprobe nvidia
# nvidia-xconfig
# xwin
X started without any problem after this and so far it didn't do any problems.

The original URL and this one both require a login for me. Is it me or has something changed?

Thanks, CatDude!

Another Google search (I almost never get help with forum searches) turned up another site that didn't require a password. Regretfully, the driver didn't work for me, and I started a new thread about that adventure.

I'm having Trouble installing Any NVidia Drivers into NOP so that I can have Me Blinging Compiz-Fusion... on This Toshiba Satyrlite :) Pro TE2100 1.7 GHz, Pentium 4 w/ 512 MB RAMemory & 16 MB NVidia GeForce4 420 Go Grafix.

I'm Running NOP 4.3.1 w/ a Full install Finally after having a Lot of Trouble Upgrading from NOP 4.1.3 Full install which I Couldn't install grays' NVidia-96.43.7 Pet nor the Latest NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.14-pkg1.run Package from the NVidia Website.

Now having Upgraded to NOP 4.3.1 I've Tried Both Grays NVIDIA-96.43.13-k2.6.30.5 Pet & the Official Proprietary NVidia Run Package, & in All Cases X Wont Run the LCD Screen Changes from Black & then a white band starts from the bottom Horizonal edge & then the Perimeter of the Screen & then the wHole Screen Turns White?!?

:? What's Happening? Can I Edit the xorg.conf File? Can AnyBody Help Please?

Ps. 'Xcuse & Pa'don Me Lousy Grama! :)

If you're still looking for your log file, at least in a standard Puppy it is /var/log/Xorg.0.log

BTW you might like to help people actually read your posts by using a selection of paragraphs, sentence case, shorter sentences or bullet points ;)
Do you know a good gtkdialog program? Please post a link here

MaxHeadroom,

The NVidia-96.43.7.pet is for the 2.6.25.16 kernel and so wont work. You need the http://www.puppylinux.asia/tpp/NOP/NVID ... 30.5-1.pet

Unfortunately the latter pet needs an update as the install script makes a depmod call which doesn't work in puppy 4.3.1 it should be depmod-FULL

After installing the pet (or indeed after trying to install the pkg.run file) drop out of X ( ctrl alt backspace) then enter depmod-FULL.

Then enter xwin to restart the X windows.
if it still doesnt work you may have to run nvidia-xconfig

nvidia shows installed but not working

#42 Post by scottf »

Hi,

I am running 4.31, full install on a 800MHz Celeron, 256MB RAM. I have a GeForce2 MX400 card.

I have tried the .pet package with no success. I have also tried the driver from the Nvidia site with the devx431 module using the instructions by Iguleder. Both times from a clean install. My xorg.conf file shows the driver as "nvidia".

When I reboot I am back to the VESA driver although the xorg.conf file still shows "nvidia". When I try to run nvidia-xconfig I get an "unable to parse" error message and it does not run.

When I run nvidia-settings the GUI window pops up but there are no options to change and this is displayed in the console window:

ERROR: NV-CONTROL extension not found on this display.
ERROR: Unable to determine number of NVIDIA GPUs on ':0.0'.
ERROR: Unable to determine number of NVIDIA Frame Lock Devices on ':0.0'.
ERROR: Unable to determine number of NVIDIA VCSCs on ':0.0'.

This is what is returned after running nvidia-xconfig:

Using X configuration file: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf".
WARNING: Unable to parse X.Org version string.
sh: line 1: 4271 Broken pipe PATH=usr/X11R6:/bin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/usr/sbin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/bin/X11:$PATH X -version 2>&1
Backup up file '/etc/X11/xorg.conf' as '/etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup'
New X configuration file written to '/etc/X11/xorg.conf'

The new xorg.conf is identical to the previous one and still shows 'nvidia' as the driver.

What would be my next step?

I meant to mention the GeForce2 is a PCI card.

we seems to be many who have this problem with choppy video.

thanks to Gray for providing the pet.

I am in no hurry, almost all of the other puppies have not this problem so no need to obligation to use the three out of 15 that have the problem.

Unless those two become the standard puppy linux.
I use Google Search on Puppy Forum
not an ideal solution though

Since puppylinux.asia is no more, I thought I would post mirrors of two files I had previously downloaded. I think they were provided by "gray" originally, but I could be wrong.
