Puppy Arcade Updated for 4.3 Users

#151 Post by sc0ttman »

Libpcre has been added to Puppy Arcade pet and sfs files.
Users of Puppy 4.3 can now install Arcade without problems.

New Downloads

Puppy Arcade v5 PET, for any Puppy:
Mirror 1
(27mb, md5: 2f05315076211fee9e0b852471fa4051)

Puppy Arcade v5 SFS, for Puppy 4.3:
Mirror 1 (27mb, md5: 614f9d0593bfb5003827970814668428)

The main post has also been updated.

For libpcre only, download here

Puppy Arcade V6 may be coming soon, I think and will hopefully be based on 4.3.1, or some variation of it...
Not sure when though.

V5 works great on my desktop computer, running NOP413!

However, on my laptop running Fatdog112 (I believe based on 412) when I click on Properties, Gxmame seems to crash and close. I've run arcade from a terminal, when I've clicked on properties and Gxmame closes, the last message in terminal says 'segmentation fault'.

Any ideas on how to correct this?

Not entirely sure without being able to test it myself, but run the 'ldd' command on gxmame, it will tell you all the dependencies, and will probably be that some of these libs need to be updated...

It's possible that Puppy Arcade replaced some libs.
Maybe copying some of these libs from your NOP install may help..

But I may be wrong, as this would possibly affect many apps, not only MAME :(
Sorry I can't help you more, but it's a place to start...

In your terminal (rxvt) type ldd /path/to/mame

Of course, you must replace /path/to/mame with the actual path.. It will show you all the dependencies used by mame, so you know what may affect it working..

VICE emulator now available for Puppy

#156 Post by sc0ttman »

VICE - Commodore Emulator

Direct Download

I've managed to get Vice working and packaged, all libs included. This has been tested in 4.3, but not in 4.2.. yet..

It emulates lots of Commodore systems, and has a separate file for each - so I've added a quick fontend to choose the system.
This is the dialog on the right of the screenshot below.

This is 10mb installed, WAY bigger than Frodo, but a lot of people have requested it, so here it is..
It may or may not be included as default in future versions of Puppy Arcade.

Installation:

Install the pet as usual..

Playing ROMS:

You need to find and download all the Commodore rom files (basic, chargen, kernal, etc) for the relevant systems, and put them in /usr/lib/vice/[system] before you can load the emulators.

I thought VICE actually came with the system ROMs, though. Not sure about the C128 as I never tried it (was a C64 user, and never got around to getting a 128 :( ). I think I also tried the Vic-20 emulation at least once (had a relative with one :/)

This version didn't come with the required roms/bios when I found it - the provider stated that they cannot provide the roms in the same package for legal reasons. I got them from 'elsewhere' :)

I didn't get roms for all systems, but everything that I checked worked fine.

But... the packaged binaries (at least the Windows versions) from the VICE site do contain them, if I remember correctly.

Puppy arcade can't delete shortcuts from desktop

#160 Post by rfxcasey »

I accidentally dragged 2000 roms from a usb drive to my desktop. They are all right on top of one another and I can't select them all at once to delete them so I have to do it one at a time. HELP! I am also having problems where my sound setting is being saved when I reboot. Sometime after a reboot it says it can't find the desktop wallpaper. Love the distro but I need some help please.

1. To remove the icons, you can open up /root/Choices/ROX-Filer/PuppyPin and delete all the entries that you want to remove. Make sure you save the changes (using savefile as well)

2. You could use this method: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=377841#377841

Your sounds settings ARE being saved, or NOT being saved? And which settings? For an emulator, or Puppy itself?

You can always put a new wallpaper called 'default.jpg' at /usr/share/backgrounds/... This is the safest and most reliable way to update the wallpaper, as this is what Puppy looks for as default...

Also, to fix (reset!) the desktop, you can install the either bling or no-bling fix... then save your settings...

Thanks that helps a bit. As far as my sound setting go they are NOT being saved it seems. I am using the on board VIA® 1617A 6 channel AC'97 audio codec. If I run the ALSA sound wizard it finds the onboard and usually if I run it right after the OS boots I can hear the "BARK BARK" during the sound test but it seems like if I do anything with the machine after boot before running this, during the test I don't hear anything and yes I have the volume turned up in the mixer. If it passes the sound test (well it always seems to but I don't hear anything) and I shut down the machine correctly it doesn't seem like it saved the setup.

One other thing, not to make this a long protracted question but, I am also having problems getting anything but the default graphics driver to work. I did like the instructions in this thread said and downloaded the package for my GeForce 2 GTS but when I restart X it fails so the only way I can get a GUI again is to either re run the Xorg wizard or use the vesa setting.

Last question, I promise, I can't get xmame to run in fullscreen even though it's selected to run in fullscreen. I am thinking maybe this is happening because I have to use the default video drivers.

all @ rfxcasey

First, it sounds as though you're haviing save file issues - these will not be Puppy Arcade specific, a solution/helping hand will almost certainly be around this forum.

Second, to get OpenGL working you just have to make sure you have the right drivers for your card.. This can take a lot of hunting, I can't guarantee the .pet files I listed in the main post will work...

Or try searching around these forums for more on your specific card, or try their site for some linux drivers... If they're in .tar.gz format you can just extract and try...

Lastly, in MAME, go to 'Default Options' in the menu, and then the 'Rendering' tab - and make sure you change the dropdown list at near the top-left, so it reads 'Xvideo - ctrl+insert' (or something close!!)

Thank You and questions

#164 Post by SpideyLinux69 »

Many thanks for this distro. It again helps answer the question what can be done with an older machine.

I have managed to run an SNES game successfully and an Amstrad game. BTW, had never heard of the Amstrad before. Amstrad presented minor issue with learning command taxonomy and figuring out the keyboard.

I can't seem to make any progress with Mame and Aatari.

For Mame, the front end insists on building a huge directory of games that I don't have. The one that I do have it seems to fail to recognize.

For Atari. What is the emulator? Hatari / Steem? I tried to dowload the Steem TOS (UK) files and placed in the Hatari? hidden directory because that was all I could find. I can't seem to use the interface at all for finding the couple of ROMS that I have.

Any guidance? thanks!

First you must build this list of games - it's a list of supported games, not a list of games found.

You must put your roms in the rom directory (look in 'Options->Directories') and then verify them - making sure the zip files contain all the needed rom files.

To verify roms, right click on them, and go to 'Properties'.. From there you check that you have all files...

Use the website http://romkeeper.com to download good MAME roms.

Puppy Arcade uses Hatari.. I used the Steem files, they work...
You should have /usr/share/hatari/TOS.img installed for Hatari

Check the Hatari website for details on how to use it - I can't help you, I never loaded roms on it, just tested the Atari OS itself was working..

Joystick not working

#168 Post by CRF »

When I run Gxmame in terminal, I get:

** Message: Loading gamelist
** Message: Loaded 6166 roms by 519 manufacturers covering 32 years.
** Message: with 231 games supporting samples.
** Message: catver not loaded, using default values
** Message: time elapsed:2.577627e+00

Would the 'catver not loaded, using default values' have anything to do with my joystick not working?

@CRF

These message have nothing to do with your joystick.

To get your joystick and joypads working, you need to plugin the joystick and type the following in the terminal:

Code: Select all

modprobe joydev
modprobe analog
Or you can just install the dot pet file I made for you.. It loads at startup - so if you've plugged in your joystick by the time your desktop is loaded, should be found and working.

So your device should b ready to use...

However to set the controls in MAME, you must press the TAB key to enter the required menu.

Hope that helps.

I tried as suggested with no luck. I figured out how to pull the menu in mame using tab and I think I messed up some settings. How do I restore them to original?

I'm using Puppy Stardust 4, which is a 4.31 on my laptop. On my desktop I am using NOP 413 with no problems running arcade and my joystick does work.
