Thank you! Grabbed TuxMath as well.

It seems odd that every app appears to place the launch icon in a very
different folder. Had a merry chase finding the SuperTux launch icon.

Need to fix a sound problem. Probably Alsa.

Thanks again! doc

Dotpup games installed but didnt start

#33 Post by CatmanDru »

first, thank you very much for creating and making available the dotpups of these games and for the great forum. the dotpups will enable me to use microsoft products less. presently, games are the main reason i havent re-allocated my Microsoft drives to Linux.

im new to linux and puppy (about a couple of months: mostly becoming familiar and more adept at partitioning a few older drives) and transfering my audio cds to harddrive.

the problem: i downloaded and installed (surprisingly easily) many (maybe ten) of the dotpup games from william's mirror. they all seemed to install ok and placed icons & data in what i assume are the correct locations in the filesystem (/user/local i think).

xtux (or a similar name) ran when i first loaded it and it popped up ready to play but after i shut it down it would and will not open and start. Now only linxtris will run.

i restarted puppy a couple of times but this didnt result in the ability to start the games.

as a note of comparison/contrast i dowloaded and installed audacity and mplayer which both seem to function ok and play sound fine.

with regard to the dotpup games, i assume 1) im doing something wrong or 2) im missing some program(s) or link or some piece of data.

i have tried unsuccessfully starting the games two ways: 1) by using the dotpup start menu from the 'start menu', and 2) by going to the folder (user/local) where the program is and clicking the program icon (not the jpg, altho i have tried that too :) ).

with regard to the dotpup games, i assume 1) im doing something wrong (that is, the problem resides in the operator), or 2) im missing some program(s) or link or some piece of data.

i would appreciate any suggestions on next logical steps to get the dotpup games to start.

my internet access is thru another machine (microsoft) located away from my personal desktop. i move files with a flash drive.

thank you very much, Dru.

desktop: Puppy version from May 06 (not the latest release), Hard drive Puppy install (not live-cd, not a file on a windows drive) on linux-partitioned ext2 filesystem 30gb HD, 800 Mhz sock 370, 384 Mb ram, cd-rom, 'HP' mainboard w/integrated sound,/video/usb, no internet, case open, windows me on disconnected drive, presently only puppy has full run of the computer.

Go to the folder in Rox, so far ok.
But now don't click on the game, but right-click -> xterm here.

Now in xterm, enter
./xxx

where xxx is the name of the program.
This will show you potential errors, usually about a missing library.
Post these errors here, so we can give a detailed solution.

Also run this command, and post the result here:
cat /etc/puppyversion

thank you for your response and the promptness!

i followed the above directions, that is opened the directory where the game program had installed, RIGHT clicked on the program icon, and then used the menu that appeared to select rox-here which opened a window.

the results:

armagetron
/usr/local/armagetron/amagetronadB: error while loading shared libraries: libSDL_image-1.2.so.0: cannot open shared object file: no such file or directory.

barrage
./barrage: error while loading shared libraries: libSDL_mixer_1.2.so.0: cannot open shared object file: no such file or directory.

blobAndConquer
error while loading shared libraries: libGLU.so.1: cannot open shared object file: no such file or directory.

bugSquish
verifying archive integrity...test: argument expected ./bugsquish: 325: cksum: not found all good. uncompressing bugsquish...................../bugsquish: error while loading shared libraries: libSDL-1.2.so.0: cannot open shared object file: no such file or directory.

bzflag (solo play)
same basic message (as first) about libSDL-1.2.so.0

labyrinth
laby same message concerning libSDL-1.2.so.0

play-moon-lander
same message concerning libSDL_image-1.2.so.0

many of the games gave me this similar error message. they probably have a similar solution, for example the library theyre requesting. other games gave different error messages which i'll post later, but i would like to post this for now and work on the fixes for these simpler games first.

my puppy version is 1.09. wow, i think puppy's at 2.0 or something already. i guess i'll be updating soon.

also i found the program for xtux in /usr/xtux as opposed to /usr/local/ where the other games got stored. i clicked on xtux in /usr/xtux and it started.

thank you,
Dru. (CatmanDru)

in my above post i mis-stated the steps.
the correct steps are:

"Go to the folder in Rox, so far ok.
But now don't click on the game, but right-click -> xterm here. [NOT rox-here as i had stated (CatmanDru) ]

Now in xterm, enter
./xxx

where xxx is the name of the program."

i just wanted to keep the steps correct and clear for others who may read this in search of answers.

Ok, you need 2 dotpups.

SDL - a library required by most modern games

OpenGL - a library for 3D-support.
With OpenGL all alone, games work, but run slow, so it is recommended, to install accellerated 3D-drivers, too.

Get SDL here:
http://www.murga.org/~puppy/viewtopic.php?t=2482

Install 3D-drivers and OpenGL for Puppy 109 with 3D-Control-Center:
http://www.murga.org/~puppy/viewtopic.php?t=8661

It might be, that some old Game-dotpups will overwrite the files of these dotpups with older versions.
In that case, install them again.
We replaced most games with corrected dotpups already, but if you encounter such a case, please report it here, so that we can fix it.

All games here should be fixed:
http://dotpups.de/dotpups/Games/
You can find descriptions by searching the "additional software"-forum (this one here) for the names of the dotpups.

Partial Success In Fixing Games

#39 Post by CatmanDru »

hi

i followed the above steps and the result is that some games work and some games dont. some still need the libGLU. below are the steps i did.

1) i installed the SDL lib for games named LibSDL1.2-forDoom.pup from the 'download box' in post at http://www.murga.org/~puppy/viewtopic.php?t=2482, and then

2) (AFTER step 1) i installed the MIDI instruments for SDL filenamed libSDL1.2-MIDI-forDoom.pup downloaded from http://noforum.de/dotpups/libSDL1.2-MIDI-forDoom.pup.

3) i installed 3D-control-center.pup (which i believe installs 3D-drivers & openGL for puppy 1.09) from http://dotpups.de (i didnt note the full address, sorry).

my problem is: 1) 3D-control-center requires a computer connected to the internet. my computer isnt connected to the internet. i have internet access in the lobby of my apartment building and move files on a usb flash drive. 2) 3D control center seems to search for pci cards (accelerated video i think): my computer has no pci cards presently -- it has graphics and sound integrated in the mainboard.
so i assume i will need to manually download and install a libGLU that will function on my mainboard. slow graphics are ok for now: i will get an accelerated graphics pci card later. my question is, what type or version of libGLU do i need? while i wait for an answer i will search around for it/them.
for anyone who hasnt installed the dotpups before, they install in a fraction (1-5 seconds) of the time of program installations in windows; are straightforward, clear and unambiquous; and caused no problems nor hassels for me.

installing libSDL1.2-MIDI-forDoom.pup the xdialog box appeared and said "these files already exist, overwrite them? -/user/local/lib/timidity/timidity.cfg (and many many other files)
I ok the overwrite.

installing libSDL1.2-MIDI-forDoom(2) the xdialog window said: "libSDL1.2-MIDI-forDoom already exists, your choice?
1 re-install
2 un-install"
i chose re-install
then xdialog window said "these files already exist, overwrite them?" i chose overwrite.

my question is did i do that ok? did i do something unecessary? or did the computer NEED to overwrite bad or old files with good/new files with the same filename? i assume the answer to the last question is 'yes'.
the working games are fun.

thank you. Dru.

yes, you did it correct.

To install the 3D control-center without internet:

you can download required files.
I can make you a list, but need to know what for a graficscard you have.
It does not make sense to download Intel-drivers, if you have a ATI-card.

Please run this command:
cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf | grep -i driver

Then post the result here.
'll post the first part of the list in some minutes, without the graficscard-specific files.

It does not matter, if the card is "onboard" or a slot-card.

By the way, Puppy 1 might be better for games.
Doom3 and Quake4 crash with my ATI-drivers in Puppy2 after 10 minutes, in Puppy 108 they work just great :)
So I still use Puppy 108 a lot, although I also have Puppy2.

You will need to download/copy these dotpups in the corresponding folders, then run the 3DCC again:

/usr/local/3D-Control-Center/resource/24
http://dotpups.de/dotpups/XServer/DRI/D ... es-2.4.pup

/usr/local/3D-Control-Center/resource/xorg
http://dotpups.de/dotpups/XServer/DRI/OpenGL.pup
http://dotpups.de/dotpups/XServer/DRI/OpenGL-B.pup

/usr/local/3D-Control-Center/resource/xorgA
http://dotpups.de/dotpups/XServer/DRI/dri-[graficscard-specific].pup

/usr/local/3D-Control-Center/resource/xorgB
http://noforum.de/dotpups/X11R6addons/dri-[graficscard-specific].pup

Look here for the dri-[graficscard-specific].pup files:
http://dotpups.de/dotpups/XServer/DRI/
http://noforum.de/dotpups/X11R6addons/
You need both versions, as only one of the two will work on certain cards.
If in your xorg.conf a driver "i810" is used, then you would download dri-i810.pup

only if you have a ATI-Radeon-card:
/usr/local/3D-Control-Center/resource/Ati
http://dotpups.de/dotpups/XServer/DRI/ATI-8.25.18b.pup

/usr/local/3D-Control-Center/resource/xorg
http://dotpups.de/dotpups/XServer/DRI/O ... .3-Ati.pup
http://dotpups.de/dotpups/XServer/DRI/O ... .0-Ati.pup

i just found your new posts. i will obtain the info you requested in a moment.

thank you for mentioning which puppy version works best for you. ive been wondering about which version is best because i noticed on the forum that it seems there is better, more stable performance and better tools, wizards, and dotpups for certain puppy versions (1.07, 1.08, 1.09?) and certain kernel versions (2.16.?). right now id prefer whichever puppy version works best with games with minimal hassel. as i gain more linux skills i can move to a puppy version that has more optimal performance -- even if it requires more manual adjustment. i had been considering updating to a puppy 2 version, maybe 2.0 or 2.1. puppy is small enuf that i could have a separate version just for games, and another version for other purposes, if needed.

i will post info in a moment. Dru.

Concerning Puppy2 I really can recommend 2.10.
I use the Alpha-version with some bugfixes, very cool, comes with many new libraries. So many new programs work, that refused to in older Puppys.
There is a beta out meanwhile, you should try that.

http://www.puppyos.net/news/

But as I said, keep Puppy 109 for games, at least if you have a graficscard from Ati.

the command you wanted me to run:

1) do i run it in the rxvt console? or another?

2) i do not have the keyboard character for the vertical straight line ( a 'pipe' ) required in the command cat /etc/x11/xorg.conf [vertical line 'pipe'] grep -i driver. am i overlooking something? or is there another way to produce that 'pipe' character? or is there another way to get the info you requested? for example is it in a file somewhere?

i realized i hadnt ran xorg wizard -- i was still using xvesa because i wasnt doing anything where grafics were important to me. i ran xorg, restarted a couple of times, and typed the command:
grep -i driver /etc/x11/xorg.conf
still only gives:
no such file or directory.
even tho i can see and read in the directory /etc/x11 the files xorg.conf, xorg.conf0, and xorg.confprev. i tried the command carefully, and then several different ways with the same result.

i opened xorg.conf and noticed it had:
card 0
driver i810
vendor name intel
board name 82810 CGC (chipset Grafics card)
bus id pci:1:0:1:0

so i assume the grafics chipset is intel and needs an intel-compatible driver or libGLU?

thanks. Dru.

X11, not x11.
Linux is case-sensitive ;)

But ok, the i810 is what we needed.

So you will need these dotpups:

/usr/local/3D-Control-Center/resource/24
http://dotpups.de/dotpups/XServer/DRI/D ... es-2.4.pup

/usr/local/3D-Control-Center/resource/xorg
http://dotpups.de/dotpups/XServer/DRI/OpenGL.pup
http://dotpups.de/dotpups/XServer/DRI/OpenGL-B.pup

/usr/local/3D-Control-Center/resource/xorgA
http://dotpups.de/dotpups/XServer/DRI/dri-i810.pup

/usr/local/3D-Control-Center/resource/xorgB
http://noforum.de/dotpups/X11R6addons/dri-i810.pup

Copy them to the mentioned folders on your "offline"-computer.
Then run the 3DCC, and choose "automatic", that should work.
If not, "manual" and choose i810 there.
Note, try both, A and B if A will not work.

Then choose the OpenGL-Installation, try the first 2 ones (Freedesktop).

Poof.....It Worked.

#49 Post by CatmanDru »

doh!
x11 versus X11: really, i tried that command several different ways... except the correct way (X11) :) . tomorrow im putting a note on my display saying "LINUX IS CASE SENSITIVE". thanks.

i followed the above instructions, used my usb flash drive (my Poor Man's Wireless Connection), my 'router' (my feet) & placed the drivers in their respective folders, ran 3D-Control-Center, and POOF ...it worked. a few more games work! ill check into what the other problems are next post. my inner-game-playing-child thanks you from the bottom of my mouse.

i hope & suspect that this thread will be helpful to others with similar problems.
