How can I help with Puppy?

#1 Post by spongedaddy »

Hello all,

Let me start by saying that I truly enjoy Puppy. It does everything I want with both my tower PC and laptop. Now I'd like to give back to both the project and community. My challenge is that I'm not sure how.

My day job is in documentation. I'm a technical writer and editor and maintain several web pages and wikis for a large software company. Of course, I'd love to help in this regard. It seems documentation is spread out all over the place, and despite our terrific forum, new Puppy users would greatly benefit from a centralized repository of articles, tips, suggestions, and HowTos. I've read the Better Documentation thread and agree that an online venue is better than a book at present. Is puppylinux.org now the preferred place for these items?

However, I have a strong desire/passion to get back to one of my first loves: programming. I started in BASIC and moved to C, which I love but haven't done a lot of work in for a long time. I'm familiar with Python and have played with Perl. Though not true programming, I am also comfortable with XHTML, CSS, and JavaScript. According to the Puppy Community Register, I am probably a 1+. Despite this, I read through Barry's "How to Program for Puppy" and think I could handle it. In a perfect world, I would be coding for Puppy.

Back to my original question: Where to start? Does anyone out there have a Puppy project that needs a hand? Or should I just shut up, read and learn more, and come back when I contribute more fully?

Please let me know. I'm here to help and learn.

Many thanks!

Hi as C goes, It would be nice to have a pmount replacement, well I've always like the look of disk usage meter, would be nice if pmount had one built in :)
kind of like the image at the link but not a screenlet but an actual working mount tool :)

check the bugs thread and offer a solution to what you can.
testing by someone who has an idea of how to fix gives a better angle on the problem.
the wiki is far from complete.

also Ubuntu has a diskusage for a hotpup type app, That would be cool if hotpup had a disk usage meter underneath :)

Many thanks for all the suggestions.

I've downloaded the p44ce to see what I can do with it (documentation if nothing else) and will register on the wiki once I can decipher exactly who it is I have to email for permissions.

Thanks again!
