Chromium-Browser - genuine Linux alpha version

#1 Post by tronkel »

I've just installed Chromium-Browser in Jaunty Woof Alpha 6.
See attached screenshot

This is the genuine version for Linux and definitely not the long-since-available Crossover-Wine version that runs extremely slowly.

This is an Alpha version and is not yet complete - but it's getting there fast.
e.g. the options menu item is not functional. It seems to be optimised for Google sites at the moment. (it crashed beautifully when trying to browse Yahoo!)

This is one mighty fast browser and would be interesting to have in Puppy.
I downloaded the DEB from Ubuntu Launchpad and simply clicked on the Rox icon. It installed no problem, however you must have msttcorefonts installed on your Puppy system - otherwise no web pages get displayed I copied mine over from my real Jaunty install, but I believe a pet package exists for this.

If there is a demand, I can upload the DEB to Puppylinux.ca

There is a German browser called SR Iron. It look just like the Google version sans the Google feedback etc. Not ready for Linux yet , but soon they say.

here is a sfs for Puppy 4.x

http://puppyisos.org/files/sfs/google-chrome/
user: puppy
password: linux

I used chromium-browser_3.0.184.0~svn20090605r17731-0ubuntu1~ucd2~hardy_i386.deb from ubuntus launchpad.
http://ppa.launchpad.net/chromium-daily ... m-browser/
Added some libs (gconf, orbit, pango) from Newyearspup/valide-svn+gedit.
Added the ssl libs from Firefox (all in /usr/lib/chromium-browser/ to avoid conflicts).

The MS fonts are included, but not active.
To activate them, type:
ln -s /usr/local/ttf_msfonts/.fonts /root/

I just added them, as this is a alpha release, that should not be added to isos.
Adding the MS fonts is illegal in many countries, so this is just a temporary workaround for first tests.
We should try asap to replace them with (renamed?) free fonts.

this is interesting:
http://www.chromeexperiments.com/

In Puppybrowser and Opera 9/10 it works, but is pretty slow.
In chromium, it runs very smooth (at least on a 2x2.6 ghz Athlon).

Hi Mark

did get Chrome running on Wine a while back
but rather have as native Puppy browser

I renamed the sfs to 421 (as I am running that)
used the bootmanager etc
and the Chrome program ran
but I got an 'Oh Snap' error message when it tried to load URL's

Hope this is of some use
be interested how others get on :)

reached in bool printing::PrintViewManager::OnRenderViewGone(RenderViewHost*)
This indicates, that you did not activate the MS fonts.
You must type in a consolewindow:
ln -s /usr/local/ttf_msfonts/.fonts /root/

At moment Puppybrowser is more usable than chromium, as chromium is still in alpha stage. E.g. chromium cannot display dotpups.de.
The only real drawback for Puppybrowser I currently see in the missing support for Javascript popup-windows. I have 2-3 sites that I visit regularily, that do not work because of this.
So I still use Opera beside Puppybrowser.

Also chromium telefones home, it has no privacy features implemented yet.

But I think once it reaches beta stage, it might be a great alternative.
I just don't know, how it behaves on old machines.
In a german forum I have read, that it was optimized for features of new processors, and did not work on a Pentium 3.
I don't know, if it is by concept, or due to the alpha state.

Ah. I was wondering if that was the case since, before giving up, I was compiling Chromium and it wanted to open strange ports for ftp, nfs and some other access. I denied it and it bombed out with an error message. I was tooling around trying to stop this, but in the end I just gave it away.
