4.3 Theming Subject description: Barry wants your opinion too |
|
Hello all.
SuperPup is NOT the theme for the upcoming Puppy 4.3 ( ) however Barry has decided on a wallpaper (at this stage) and many people like it, the brushed alloy Puppy image presented by zigbert, created by Raymond Levang. (see screeny below).
What needs to be decided is the icon theme, JWM theme and GTK theme. Forum member 'trio' has created some great little apps so that anyone can make a JWM or GTK theme for Puppy. Dejan555 has a cool website with heaps of icon themes as well as GTK, JWM, and other themes and wallpapers, among other things...http://puppy-look.tk/
With these tools at hand, who can create the next default theme for Puppy? If you don't know how to make a pet of your theme, trio has taken care of that too.. see his signature for Petmaker.
Here are some shots below with the Zabuton3 icons (found on puppy-look.tk), and a quick JWM and GTK themes I knocked up... with the default wallpaper....
We need more ideas... post them!
Cheers and have fun

I don't think those will fit on desktop, more for app buttons or similar.

I like best the icons marked "Original" in 4.3 beta 2's Menu -> Desktop -> Desktop icon switcher.
As for the background, anything that isn't mostly red or too busy is fine with me. Too busy and the icons get lost in the clutter.

Grey terribly deadku dull - paint it bluescreen-blue |

Grey = terribly deadly dull: paint it bluescreen blue or hard red with white letters or
According to Barry grey looks businesslike. I am afraid not it is not very appealing to me.
If it were up to me lemon yeloow or pink salmon but that is probably too sweet.
Therefore I suggest "bluescreen blue" or "bright red".
As for the icons no idea, but the little doggy under on the left should remain forever !
Instead of "menu" I suggest the word "Start" at least something to attract Winblowers. But there it ends. "Pdict" now what ? Why not "Dictionary - Pdict" etc.
Nobody listens and therefore it will remain mainly a distro for amongst tweakers, which is a waste of quality. So sorry for this feature "meant mainly for teakers".
So I am sure it won't be bluescreen-blue because that stupid nancy reagan said so.
On the other hand I think series 4 should have staid as lookalikes with one or two symbols to show the difference for the sake of recognition.

Hmm yeah like nancy said grey-ish background is bit hard to combine with anything coloured, but background shouldn't be something too bright either, should be pleasant colours.
Blue moon is nice, ttuuxxx's 214 desktop is example of what i would put as default
Anyone tried erectus theme (with ubuntu-ish brown colors?) They seem nice and lightweight.

If I may.
While I'm not entirely in favour of nancy's suggestion to make the background bluescreen blue, there's nothing to stop one from doing so. So, not all is lost nancy
BUT she (?) has got a point - in the menu, it might be better to put the entries in the format "Function - name". A lot of the programs have really wicked three letter names, which sound like Klingon with a stutter (GPPT PPTP VPN Client - I even dread to think what's it do) so perhaps giving them slightly more accessible menu entries might be a sound point.
As per the colour themes etc. I'm with Barry - toned down colours look more business-like and less flashy-blinky giving a certain feeling of ease. I don;t know how to explain it better, but "screaming" colours are off-putting.

False assumption. Just because your ideas aren't acted upon doesn't mean they weren't listened to. You don't have a mortgage on being right any more than I do, nancy. Like everyone else, your opinion matters but it remains your opinion and there are others.
I like the latest Zabuton icons too. What's more they are unique, being developed almost "in house" by JebaJQ8.
Brushed metallic background with engraved Puppy logo conveys impression of being solid, unbreakable. A good impression to create if it is true; a deception if it isn't.
I don't like the old-fashioned Puppy icon in the menu/start button. We have a Puppy logo and nothing should detract from that.
Just my humble opinion.

This is only my opinion, but I don't like the look of the start button. I'm sorry. It's just really offputting. Couldn't it be updated to make it more like the normal puppy logo? If fact, give me some guidelines, and I could even offer you some of my own made via GIMP.
Still, I do like the aesthetic. Can't help but feel monochrome icons would look nicer, although maybe pastel shades would give a much-needed splash of colour without disrupting the theme. Those icons mentioned above would be fairly well suited.

The wallpaper doesn't matter to me. I usually change to one of the scenic backgrounds or use one of my own. I also add the version number to the lower right corner to remind myself which Pup I am running.
Cheers

I guess we all change wallpaper, but first impression is what partly matters for new users

I like the wallpaper and also think it makes a good first impression - simplistic, yet elegant, somewhat like Puppy
I like its colour as well, but I guess blue-ish would appeal to most people (?)
Of the icon-sets I prefer Smooth-Color (and Original), for about the same reason - simplistic, yet elegant, but also the colours are vivid enough to liven up the desktop a bit, even if the wallpaper should seem "dull" in itself, and they ought to work nicely on higher screen resolutions as well.
I would adjust/replace a couple of the icons, though.. but that's details
Tested on 2 older-ish lappies (therefore LCDs) so far.

That is the whole point of this topic. I stated in the main post that the wallpaper is more or less decided, by Barry. He is open to suggestions for other theming, re icons, gtk and jwm.
So, on the understanding that the wallpaper is a given, let's see who can come up with a nicer iconset (default is "gray marble"), gtk theme and jwm theme. Bear in mind also that Barry is using JWM 456 at the moment in 4.3beta2, that is Joe Wing's latest svn release with the round corners based on forum member Patriot's work. See Joe's Window Manager (JWM) enhancements (Beta Release) by Patriot
.
I provided links in the main post to some tools by "trio" such that anybody, even without much knowledge of GTK or JWM can create nice themes.
This is part of the fun of Puppy. . And you never know, someone might just create something that Barry and the rest of us love.... that showcases 4.3 .
Above all... keep it fun!
Cheers.
