If you wanted to get rid of Geany and nicoedit, (I do like Nicoeditor )
A good replacement, better than medit and much smaller is Code Browser, The only issue I have with Code Browser, is the closing of the tabs/pages, you have to right click on the document and select close. it doesn't have a "X" to close, rt click only. If you could hack in a close button on each tab it would be perfect. aragon's last package was 176kb, being that small, it runs quick and a tiny editor wouldn't be needed anymore, it has lots of cool features like upto 5 window panes at once.
Most I would ever need is 2, but hey it has 5, lol

Thank you for the note about the current beta2 kernel and the eee 900.

Can I assume at this point there is not yet acpi support for the eee 700/900 series? Just want to make sure I haven't missed something

the upgrade went through without apparent error, but I've lost a few desktop icons that i'd created (links in /root and a link to the Opera startup scrip) , plus my /etc/profile.
worst of all, Opera no longer works at all

Nicoedit sufficient for most users. Having Genie in the package manager and /or devx is a great solution..

GRUB troubles

In the 4.3beta2 forum feedback there are reports of trouble with GRUB.

This is a mystery to me, as I went through the exercise of doing a frugal install and installing GRUB to the MBR, and it worked fine.

Anyway, I have put together another GRUB pet package from an Ubuntu GRUB package, grub-0.97-29ubuntu53.pet.

Would you guys mind installing this, then go through the whole exercise again.

What version of pup were you upgrading from?

Note, the 4.3beta2 announcement has upgrading from 4.2x on the to-do list.

I ran 'modinfo agrmodem' and 'modinfo agrserial' and there are no alias entries. How does this modem ever get automatically loaded for the correct hardware?

The AGRSM and Intel modems don't appear to register with udev (or however the modaliases are created). They are invoked by the udev rules in 60-udev-modem.rules, so be sure they are picked up from the dotpets accompanying those drivers.

BTW, I am about to build a set of Intel537 drivers -- there are actually 4 of them, for the various flavors. Each is about 4 MB, so I fear for what that would do to puppy's waistline. Because I favor a puppy that can load its program squashfile into the ramfs in PCs with only 256 MB of RAM, I suspect we are facing migrating the heaviest of the modem drivers to a zdrv (or equivalent) auxiliary squashfile. Perhaps all modem drivers in their own subdirectories would be candidates for migration, except for modems built into laptops or motherboards. That would recognize that not all users need all of the modem drivers in their ramfs.

It is easy to set this as you want: right-click on any desktop icon, choose ROX-Filer -> Options.

Thanks for the tip. The complete trail is: Right-click on any desktop icon, choose ROX-Filer -> Options > Pinboard > Foreground. Left-clicking on the associated box provides the entire range of colors as possibilities.

Clean live-CD install, Puppy 424.
Locale fr_Fr: gpartedshell does not appears in French. But by launching gparted or gpartedbin to the console, the display works in French.

I downloaded and installed the new GRUB fix and it worked! If it means anything, during the boot up I did see a quick flash of GRUB error before it went on the selection screen.

Someone said earlier that they were happy that their broadcom wireless hadn't worked in the 4.2 series and now worked with this version. Mine doesn't work with this new version either and I was keeping my fingers crossed that it would work out of the box. It did work previously with NOP4.13r1 and FatDog 111/112 out of the box. If I remember correctly with NOP4.13r1 it showed up as WL module. Is there an easy fix for me to get this working? I'm not the most experienced with Puppy. By the way, I do like the new desktop appearance!

I did exactly the same exercise (*) as former trials with
grub-0.97-29ubuntu53.pet
and now it works ! Yeppie!

I did the installation on the already tested laptop PIII600MHz; as also on a desktop HP 5120 Pavilion. (On this last PC the frugall install + Grub to the MBR with the original live-cd gave the same error messages as on my former post - as also with grub-0.97.pet installed)

(*)frugal install on sda1 ext3 (re)formated partition + boot folder on /dev/sda1 + Grub to the MBR (simple install = not expert)

Boot time on laptop Medion PIII600MHz192MBRam (bought in year 2000!) = 31 sec ! Waôw!

On the good side, this is the first of the 4.x series that properly detected my BCM43xx wireless in my laptop. Will be at several WIFI spots this Thursday and will test fully at that time.

Gparted works for me now. Nice to have Geany back. Viewnior is great. I really like the theme and desktop!

Puppy 4.3 beta2 - bugs, problems and other nitpicks:

- The ENTER key doesn't work in the Puppy Package Manager search box A small,but really important feature.

- When changing to a different JWM theme, Puppy erases the .jwmrc-tray file and the taskbar disappears forever. There's no backup mechanism as in Puppy 4.2

- JWM Configuration -> Tray Management
Attempting to change the number of virtual desktops or any other setting through the GUI results in an error message:
'New config corrupt. Keeping original'

- SeaMonkey is not up to date. Version 1.1.18 is out.

- Please add progress indicators to the package manager.

- The low-contrast gray icons look dull and are a bit hard to see. They need some colour love

Yep, your ubuntu pet cured my grub woes. I had updated my frugal install of Beta 1 on /sda1 but couldn't get a full install on /sdb working. I had set aside my second hard drive for a full install of 4.3 Final but wanted to ensure that It would boot properly (had been XP as part of dual boot but now all PUP)!

The little problem with JWM configuration has already been addressed by Barry and fixed for beta 3. Just open /etc/xdg/templates/_root_.jwmrc and remove <Corner> tag lines from it with a text editor. Then run in terminal "fixmenus", restart jwm and it should work.

Seamonkey 2.0Beta is excellent - and they keep issuing tiny updates - any idea when a stable version with the necessary Flash, Java, etc. will be released?

There are a number of sites that do not render correctly with the 1.1.xx series ... or is it for lack of the proper plug-in's for 1.1.17 (and maybe also 1.1.18)?

I could not get the alsa wizard to find either of my soundcards. snd-hda-intel (AC861VD) or Audigy ZS (uses snd-emu10k1).

Fortunately the default card0 (AC861 was modprobed at startup and I was able to modprobe the snd-emu10k1 from console. Both cards are setup and working fine but still nothing found by the wizard. Something new needed in the script?

All the other things I use commonly seem to work fine on the Toshiba laptop, booting from USB stick.
