Updating 2 Series 2.18X And it starts again :)

#1 Post by ttuuxxx »

Well Guys I had to make a new thread because I changed the Kernel in 2.14X from 2.6.18.1 to 2.6.18.8 and this has brought a whole lot of new little bugs to 2.14X, I changed the kernel so that 2.14X/2.18X can use series 3 and 4 SFS files out of the box, which it couldn't before, What a long and confusing process, 2.14X had a different files system than 2.18 and so I had work that out, It took over 20 builds and 20hrs straight to do it. I'll upload a bug blasting version in about 1 hrs time :)

Alpha1
-working Xorg/xVesa
-No sounds
-Manual network setup
-Latest firefox, just released today :)
-Latest flash just upgraded.
-Many bug fixes

Hi ttuuxxx,

Congratulations for the achievement realized, yes you are the man. :)

We had so much fun chasing bugs in 2.14x (although 2.14x from the beginning was a rock solid version to work) and now we have a new toy to play, a pity we don´t have so much time as we were kids to play with a new toy....

I suppose the new version has a new initrd.gz, new kernel modules and other things to test. I want to check initrd.gz as soon as I finish updates in 2.14x.

I´m so happy with your updates man. Someday you have to make a manual about how to create all this magic.

Okay just tried out the "it works but has bugs" version of 218X.
ie

Code: Select all

 http://www.puppylinux.asia/tpp/ttuuxxx/2.18Xseries/testing/Works-vesa.iso
Downloaded. Opened the iso and copied 3 files (vmlinuz, initrd and pup2-218.sfs) to a separate partition but get kernel panic.
That's as far as I could go I'm afraid.

Later on this evening I'll tryout the compiler and if I can get it working, I'll see about compiling Xorg. Would like to make this rock solid

Downloaded, burned and posting now from 2.18X "works but has bugs" edition".

Running 1024x768x16 w/ xvesa, live pfix=ram.......different box...Nvidia Riva TNT card.

Firefox also just crashed as I was typing this too.

No problems booting but had to manually load NIC driver.Except for Xorg...everything else seems to work.

Later...... :)

Hi Guys for the first time now I have Xorg finally working, this is the newer 2.18 Xorg, which I think it might be the same one as 2.14X was model number but less drivers. Now I just have to remember how I did it, lol , won't be long

Oh ya remember how I wanted the remaster script stripped, well I did it, now it takes les than 1 min to open the iso on cd/copy and make a directory/build a new iso.
Man thats cool, I might tweak it a bit also :)

ttuuxxx:
I did a manual install last time as I didn't want to keep buring CDs and didnt have any re-writeable ones. But I think it's a good plan to get some.

I got the kernel panic just after loading pup2-218 file (setting up layered file system?) so well before vesa.

Tried again today to install the "works but has bugs" version as a frugal after burning a new CD.

Booted okay this time from the CD and got to xorgwizard. Selected xvesa and got a gui.

Connect didn't find my ethernet LAN.

MUT found both my DVD drives. Pmount only the one running the CD.
No icons on the desktop however I tried.

Tried to do an install to HDD (clean partiton) using PUI.
Needed to force CD to mount and then got
...this file /mnt/hdc/pup_218R.sfs does not exist.
which was correct as the CD has a pup2-218.sfs file instead.

So tried to do a manual install again and this one worked.

Same issues as above..LAN card not recognised, no drive icons, pmount doesn't see either DVD drive now,

Interestingly, well it is to me, the "Firefox temporarily pulls the desktop icons off when shut down after run from Menu" problem is there on this version.

Tried to reboot to generate a save file but keeps going back into xvesa video wizard screen. Even if I attempt a shut-down or exit to prompt. Even at the terminal.
So not possible to test out sfs file handling!!

Forgot to say, I used a new download this time and perhaps, just perhaps, the previous one may have been corrupt.

ttuuxxx could you kindly add MD5 info to your iso downloads so we can check against this.

Thanks
Dave

Oh yes make sure you don't have any extra pup2-218.sfs laying around on your harddrive, because the sfs files system will load it at boot time, just like the 4 series does, no more / :)
now for the bugs :)

Hi ttuuxxx, tried 218xAlphav1.iso with a manuall install but couldn't load xorg or xvesa. Burnt to a cd with exact same result. :(
md5sum checked out o.k.
Noticed there was an earlier version but missed that.

Alpha 1 better.

Ran from CD, and got xorg working. Manually loaded lan driver and could browse. All partitions recognised and icons on desktop. Mut ok.
However Pmount unstable and crashes if try to change anything.

Attempted install using PUI but again it asks for the wrong pup.sfs file (see above) which is different from the one on the CD.

So tried a manual install and again get a kernel panic at
Performing a switch-root to layered fs. not syncing. attempted to kill init.

I'll say this it runs smooth on my p3 compaq persario . :D As you mentioned ttuuxxx about bugs , sound and network drop after a reboot. after a reboot , i loose the icon pictures but not the executables themselves ,the programs come up when the executable is clicked . As i said , smooth running otherwise . Can't wait for the next one but i'll try .

MHHP,
Out of interest what grub boot stanza are you using?
Could you let me see the relevant part of your /boot/grub/menu.lst please.
Cheers

hi ttuuxxx, i have tried your new pup but i could not get pass xorg/vesa setup.
I think your hardware detect is a bit screwed with this kernel.
I loaded it with pfix=ram
I am using a usb wifi dongle and it seems to be detected as a usb mouse thus missing the inbuilt mouse pad, system then throws up error
login [72031]: root login on 'tty1' the login number changes with every boot.
I have tried changing mouse in the xorg window but still no boot with xorg or vesa on this dell laptop.
