Prerequisites:
Puppy 1.0.6 installed to hard drive (would probably work back to 1.0.4?)
usr_devx.sfs installed at /
Downloaded tarball from windowmaker.org.
extracted the tarball to a directory to work from.
cd to the directory extracted to
./configure
make
make install
(all this took a long time on a 266 MHz laptop with 96 MB RAM!)
After install, exit to prompt and type 'xwin wmaker'
Caveats - WPrefs (the configuration utility) can not find the graphic portions of the program, but by turning on "balloon help" in first window, and figure out what is going on. Probably a path thing, that needs to tracked down yet.
I did notice that there are ./configure arguments that can change the paths of some of things, so I would imagine with some experimentation one could get windowmaker installed at /root. See the README and the INSTALL documents. There is also a "strip" option to to reduce the overall install footprint. I did not use that this first time through.
