dpup progress update |
|
Just thought i'd give you an update on dpup progress...
476e (not released yet...a day or two) will be the last dpup based on the 476 series, the next release will be 481a with a new 2.6.29.6 kernel, based on the 430 series, to address a few issues with regards to newer hardware, it will also by nature be sfs4 not sfs3.
ttuuxxx and I have been working to get dpup476 to the point where it is a solid base(operationally and software wise) to be starting with, now comes the work to make 481+ a real branch of Puppy 5.0.
In the next few weeks I will be setting up a website exclusively for dpup development and those interested can toss their 2 cents worth in. Just to whet everyone's appetite, it is my intention to make dpup fully apt functional, allowing dpup to draw on an enormous base of packages, that will seamlessly be available as well as our own precious pets.
This stream of Puppy will at all times adhere to the changes made in general by Barry.
Cheers
Guy (gposil)

Count with my two cents...
The sfs version choice could create a real debate here. But as far as I can see that`s not a real problem, we can create new sfs packages for the new version.
It`ll cost some time to realize but everything evolve and we have to move on, surely they have a good reason (architect design?), to remove support for early sfs versions.

There's much work to do until dpup reaches a final states ... but good luck, dpup gets my vote.
I just generated my first dpup with Woof ... it's really nice, it's fast, but some wizards don't work, AbiWord is crazy, PMusic doesn't work ...
Good luck.

Iguleder,
Try the dpup iso here, it is vastly different to the standard woof build...

I already know about it, I want to attempt to fix things on the "clean" Woof-built dpup and contribute fixes.
I think that dpup is much better than any other Woof'ed Puppy, I'd like to help in any way I can.

Hi Gposil I had this laptop given to me, its not bad has 256MB or ram, Amd athlon 1800 cpu, puppy 5.2 and 2.14X wouldn't load, I tried a couple small ubuntu's and they needed extra's etc, could deal with learning stuff just to boot a ubuntu like this one http://ulite.org/content/get-ulite#cd
Myah Os worked out of the box, but I hate dealing with non-root linux and was a tad slow with flash and then I figured why not give dpup a shot, so I looked around on my drives and found this update version you posted above, and boom it worked, sure its the older seamonkey, but I'm just letting my kids play on it, so all will be good and flash runs nice and quick, I'll probably remove Gnumeric and build a newer abiword without goffice to save space and remove Cups and retheme Seamonkey plus add a few games and they should be happy
Thanks once again for this version

also if anyone wants a copy when I'm finished or as I go during testing just ask and I'll upload one, I'll probably just work on this for about 1-2 days, just something for my kids to use, not something I'm going to support long term.

Cool James, I have a version ready buttttttttt, lol I wasn't happy with it, really all I needed was a basic puppy that worked on the laptop for the kids and flash had to work really well, they mostly play online games like neopets and poptropica plus facebook etc. I did manager to get 2.14X to run on it, lol it was my fault that it didn't work the first time
Well actually it was the cdrw I was using, it had a lot of scratches, man I wish that they would make cdrw's more like cdr's and less like dvd's, cd's you can scratch a lot and they work fine, but dvd's don't take much before they are coasters or fireworks in the microwave, lol I only did that once, lol
Anyways back to this dpup, yes it works fine online, and I spent 2 days on it, Nothing would compile on it properly, So I just used a few packages that worked, like Barry's Firefox, well I'll probably still use that because its small and works fine,
Basically It couldn't even compile Geany, I figured out what was wrong with it,
First it had some coreutils errors, it wasn't complete enough.
then it had some libglib errors
then it had gtk errors once the glib errors were fixed
then when I ran the new2dir script, new2dir backend was damaged do the the newer coreutils, so then I had to install some new busybox links that were broken because coreutils install.
wow what a ride I had figuring that out today, I could of just stuck with the way it was for the kids, they wouldn't of know, but It bugged me, so I fixed it running live, now tomorrow I'll start putting it together in another release. Running live I can now compile Geany and the latest gcalctool, which I had no chance before during out of the box, so Its looking good

I even have evince compiled at 344kb pet with the following plugins, not bad at all, I guess it will have a new pdf viewer also, I really like evince in 2.14X and that was a task to compile in 2.14X, much easier in dpup with all the extra gnome deps.

Ok as a system monitors/task managers go, Gnome System Monitor blows away lxtask, pprocess etc etc, I manged to get it running on dpup, The difference in size is well lxtask is 15kb pet and Gnome System Monitor is 165kb pet, do you guys think I should add it?
below is some screenshots, the first two are the main screen, It uses a taskbar to show all the functions, it also shows dependencies and threads of each task, kind of cool.
