Use Windows Drivers on Linux System with Pupeee ?

What works, and doesn't, for you. Be specific, and please include Puppy version.

Use Windows Drivers on Linux System with Pupeee ?

#1 Post by jgbpup »

Hey.
So i tried Asus tech support.
Said I have a Asus EEE 701SD linux, i want to wipe it and use a Puppy distro, but I want my multitouch supported. (SD uses a diff touchpad than the others)
I can only find XP drivers.

they said download and use the XP driver because it's generic and works in both XP and Linux.

but everything I get from the forums say the driver must be kernel appropriate, and usually they are installed as a PET.

Anyone ?

The truth is hardware drivers are written for specific operating
systems. They have to be. Your down to the nuts and bolts
level.

I.E. Windows , Mac OS-X , Puppy Linux , etc. Unfortunately not
all hardware makers make drivers for all OS's. Perhaps a
"close" generic driver would work. Try booting Puppy off a
live CD (4.2.1) and see if it sees the touch pad before installing
anything to your hard drive.

Not knowing the Asus EEE 701SD perhaps you could get more
specific information on the touch pad. If you are still using XP
you might discover more info Control Panel and get the driver
info.

Other then that perhaps one of the Propeller Heads on the
Forum may have a better answer...

jgbpup,

While I'm a complete neophyte, when it comes to matters Linux, I do recall seeing the ability in some distros to wrap windoze drivers and use them. An expert will have to answer if "the little dog" has the feature. You are in luck with regards to XP. I've seen remarks to the effect that Vista drivers can't be "wrapped". Yet another reason to treat Vista as a POS.
