pet package won't install |
|
I just downloaded the pet package, and went to install it and got the following message:
| Code: |
There was an error expanding packages pbiblx-09-25-09.tar.gz
Either the file is corrupted (I downloaded the pet file twice, just in case and deleted the previous expansion effort....), or has not expanded into its own directory with name of pbiblx-09-25-09 (which is how most packages expand). You will have to go into /root/.packages/ directory and manually clean it up.
This script will now exit. |
I looked in the /root/.packages directory and It appears to have created a directory called pbiblx-0.1.7 instead? So I manually created a folder called pbiblx-09-25-09 and it said it installed but also said there's no menu entry. I opened a terminal and typed pbiblx and it came back with -- bash: pbiblx: command not found. I tried entering pbiblx-09-25-09 and it did the same thing.
Now what? I'm running Slaxer pup 4.12 if that makes a difference, under a frugal install.

pBiblx Sub_title: tar.gz problems |
|
I have not been able to duplicate your error in either ShepherdPup nor NOP. I have not heard of similar problems from the other downloaders and suggest it may be your download (handshake server - blrowser corrupting file?).
In SlaxPup your easiest way will be to install from the .pet package instead.
Let me know if you pursue the .tar.gz further or resolve the problem!

The error message I posted was from installing (or attempting to install) the .pet file, I'm sorry if I wasn't clear about that. After the first attempt I deleted the files and re-downloaded the pet. It did the same thing. Since the error message from the pet package manager mentioned the /.download location I took a look in there and found the tar package.
There must be something in the .pet installation routine that's creating the folder with the different version number, because I didn't put it there.
However, it looks like it was installed, but since there's no menu entry I don't know how to launch it. I tried a terminal and typed 'pbiblx' which resulted in 'command not found' -- as mentioned in my original post.

Thanks, I will look into the .pet package to see where it is failing.
For now try /usr/local/pbiblx/pbiblx or the symlink /usr/local/bin/pbiblx. You should know right away whether the pet did indeed install as designed. There should also be a pbiblx.desktop file in /usr/share/applications/ that you can drag to your desktop or adjust to your particular menu layout.
I appreciate your effort and patience. Please share what you think about pBiblx!

Thanks for the reply. I just looked in /usr/share/applications, /usr/local/ and /usr/local/bin and there's no pbiblx folder. I even had it show hidden files and folders, just in case. So while my 'fix' of creating a folder by the name it was looking for told me it installed -- it didn't really.
So if you find anything that leads to a revised pet package, keep me posted! Thanks.

pBiblx Sub_title: .pet problem |
|
I just downloaded and installed .pet on a fresh copy of NOP 4.3.1 no problem complete with menu entry and symlink.
I can't reproduce your problem on my systems. If you are command line proficient you could #pet2tgz ./pbiblx-09-25-09.pet to convert it to a tar.gz; extract it in a tmp directory; then drag from /usr in your tmp directory to / just to get it going.
Does anyone else know what's going on?

NET bible Sub_title: NET bible and other texts? |
|
I could be wrong about this, since my ShepherdPup is still downloading, but it looked like the New English Translation aka NET Bible isn't included. It isn't exactly public domain, but it is the most recent translation that is free for non-commercial use
http://bible.org/netbible/index.htm
http://bible.org/downloads
What would be involved in getting the NET Bible imported to pBiblx? I found a general mention of adding more translations to the /extras folder, but no actual file format spec.
1pritts2u writes:
Thank You for your link to OpenStreetMap. I'll be checking it out.
As to the NET bible import, I never checked directly with them but, I was unclear if I could distribute it in a altered plain text pbiblx form on my CD image or on my website. I have also been contacted by organizations that have distributed and or bundled pBiblx with handling charges which does violate NET policy.
As to rolling your own, it would be quite easy, that's the beauty of plain text. My early texts before finding OSIS to convert were all html files stripped of all the html, put into a simple format:
Psalms:117:1 <NET>@ Praise the Lord..................
One verse per line. There is also a copyright file used to display copyright information at each request.
I have rolled several translations for my own use that I couldn't distribute (NASB NIV NKJV NLB) just from html.
I'd suggest looking into the html before you strip it as there are often <span> or <div> tags that can be used to extract right at the verse number and verse text. I used cli programs html2text sed and grep and have a series of sed scripts to convert various book name types to a pbiblx standard (I will post those if needed).
P.S would you mind if I forwarded your question to the Puppy MurgaForum as this question may be of interest to others as well? I might try at some point to write a more detailed HowTo.
All for Christ! - Randy

Merry Christmas Ya'll |
|
As a Christmas gift to pBiblx users here on the forum, I would like to share an alpha preview of the next generation of pBiblx.
http://rpritts.homelinux.net/
Code named "pBiblx2 - Street Wise Bible Application System" it is due for release mid-January 2010 on ShepherdPup. This is a web based pBiblx cgi running on my personal Hiawatha. You are free to play around with it; see what you think. New features are being added daily, bugs are being worked as I find them. Please let me know if you stumble on them. Come back often to see it evolve.
I would like to thank every one that helped out and all those that have used ShepherdPup. Downloads of the current ShepherdPup and pBiblx-0.1.7 are going through the roof this month since Distrowatch pumped Shep'. God's word is being shared and that's a wonderful thing.
As we say here in the Rockies -
Merry Christmas - Ya'll![/url]
