Updating 4.2 series

#1 Post by ttuuxxx »

Well guys, I started Updating 4 series, The first thing I updated was GlibC now its GlibC 2.7 :) and firefox 3.5 is working stable, but not as snappy as it should be, its close, much better than 4 series and almost as good as 2.14.1.X :)
Next is glib, gtk, etc etc, and it won't look like 4.2, Probably just reuse the theme from 2.14.1X I like Blue better than Orange, and yes I'll be tossing out the Pwidgets and Ppanel, etc. haven't decided if Icewm is staying either. all those things can be added via the repo or from the forum.

With so many Firefox addons these days it only makes sense to use Firefox as default and where I'm installing it to, People will have no problem installing the full seamonkey suite along side of it. Plus Firefox 3.5 updates automatically, the trick is getting it stable, I'll do that :)
I see forum post all the time, how do you update Seamonkey??, etc. This way they can install Seamonkey as a pet, uninstall Seamonkey and install a new version without loosing any of there Bookmarks, etc. Plus if you wanted to remove Firefox its just 2 folders and one .desktop file to delete.

How do we know it is an updated 4.2, perhaps a Mustang on your beach wallpaper? :)

Yes; new users see the popup the first time they use Seamonkey
and automatically assume it's necessary to upgrade.

I'm quite content with 1.1.15 so far.

Inspiron 700m, Pent.M 1.6Ghz, 1Gb ram.
Msi Wind U100, N270 1.6>2.0Ghz, 1.5Gb ram.
Eeepc 8g 701, 900Mhz, 1Gb ram.
Full installs

yes I have 1.16 compiled also, it was in the first 2 releases of 2.14.1X but I didn't make it public because I used the full glib package to compile including, libgio so that would of had to been added also, But Barry also compiled the same one for series 2, but should work for series 4 I think, I haven't tried it, its located at
http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dis ... 6-pup2.pet
It has the old look to it also, I wish he would of reused the theme I put together for 4.2 Seamonkey and added monkey menus, but he didn't.
Anyways still plugging along with it, had a couple of snags, but I'm getting it :)

Just for my personal information.
What is the advantage to recompile a SeaMonkey 1.1.16, while there is an installable version available from Mozilla?

Yes they both worked, actually I had them both working at the same time, watching a video and a moving cam :)

Usually its 2-4MB compressed smaller, Its better suited for the pc, eg usually you need extra gnome libs, debus etc to meet the requirements. The end result will be a quicker, smaller, and more stable version.
The Firefox on the 2.1.4.1X I'm in the middle of doing, Thats a bit different, since I've updated most of the systems backend that meets or exceeds the system requirements, by adding Dbus etc, latest glib, gtk etc. The backend of 4 series is dated, and that's why I'm trying to update it also. So things like the latest flash and Firefox will work out of the box for the next 1-2yrs.

Well I've been putting it together somewhat, What I mean is that, I've been testing Firefox and making the compiled packages ready for the transformation, but I did noticed that when I ran Firefox from the command line that it had some errors but it was stable, and the sites like the Mozilla plugins/themes was scrolling about 85% speed level, where as 4.2 was about 30% and 2.14.1X was at 100%, I could live with 85%, but then I remembered when I was compiling gtk that it compiled fine without final errors, but during the compile it was skipping certain parts that wouldn't compile on 4.2 base, So I figured what the hay, If 4 series can't completely compile gtk2 then try something else, well I have dpup's lenny gtk on hand and I tried that and well it had less FireFox fox errors, only had 2, but still wasn't happy, it wasn't at 100% speed, So then I tried Slackware 12.2 gtk that one only had 1 error and it wasn't bad, but the scroll speed was reduced somewhat. So hmmm I'll try Ubuntu next, lol

well I'm going back to working on 2.14.1X tomorrow. I'm okay with how 4.2.1 came out, but FF3.5 doesn't really scroll quick enough. Flash is stable, It does slow down noticeably because of conky, its the layers on the desktop. but its still slow without it, but not as bad. I'm going to wait for Barry's 4.13 to be release. It should be smaller, less resources, less changes, and a better base for upgrading.
